The only problem with all this is that it's the Hudson. And water quality aside, there is never a dull moment on that river around here with boats, ferries, cruise ships, etc. A small paddle kayak is not exactly what I'd want to be paddling on the lower Hudson.

I don't find a loud, smelly ride to be a pleasure, but I was raised sailing and paddling, which are about being "with" the water rather than trying to conquer it. both of the above, incidentally, don't burn hundreds of gallons of fuel for a joyride.

I guess we just disagree on what's fun. I don't have a muscle car or SUV either, and I pitch a tent rather than have an RV.

What's wrong with pleasure cruising? Cruising up the Hudson and spending the weekend cooking and sleeping among the beautiful mountain scenery? Or cruising around Manhattan with a date and some champagne? Or heading down to Sandy Hook for some lunch, swimming, and sun bathing? I'm not sure why you consider a sport cruiser to be a "ridiculous vehicle"?

2 happiest days of a boat owner: The day you buy it, and the day you sell it.

I wonder if the boat's name tells the whole story...

Pictures and details about the boat can be see here: http://www.boattrader.com/listing/200 ... ay-270-Sundancer-97469395.

You can see what similar boats are selling for here: http://www.boattrader.com/search-resu ... /Make-Sea%20Ray/Length-27,27/Year-2000,2000/More-all/Model-Sundancer/Sort-Price:ASC/

It's my boat, and I cannot afford to keep it by myself, but I would be able to afford to keep it if I had two partners to divide the costs in three.

Each partner would pay $9,916,67 towards the purchase of a one-third interest in the boat, and also one-third of the annual operating costs (which would equal about $5,000 for each owner) to cover dockage and winter dry dockage at Liberty Landing Marina, winterization and spring launch costs, insurance, and general maintenance.

I think this is the best and most affordable way to enjoy a boat in this area.

You conveniently left off the fact that how quickly a Boat depreciates in Value and therefore when the honeymoon between all 3 partners is over and you go to sell it, your lucky if you get 1/3 of your investment back and thats if your lucky....

You should provide all details !

Yeah, what you should do is hire a seer and have them create a detailed future history of everything that will happen to the boat from now until the universe implodes and the elements within each plank are wiped out in a cataclysm of atomic energy. It's only fair.

So who pays when it needs new bottom paint? A partial engine rebuild? What color upholstery to install? It will lead to endless arguments. Don't even consider a three-way share with strangers. Everyone will get pissed off when "their" boat is left with unfamiliar smells, unexplained dents, stains, missing silverware, etc.

I split a yacht with one person 50-50, an old and dear friend with complete trust, and we still bicker about things.

I would advise you to only own a boat you can afford. Sell it when you can no longer afford it. Any scheme you cook up to mitigate costs and preserve ownership will probably cost you a lot more in the long run.

We do all our own maintenance and repairs on our boat and it is still my largest annual expense by far.

If you don't care about strangers using and abusing your boat, you can see if it is chartable - call NYC brokers and see if there is any demand.

Bret (taking a wild guess here),

You might also want to look into Liberty Yacht Management (www.libertyyacht.com). They may be willing to purchase the boat and add it to their fleet of timeshare and fractional ownership vessel. I am a satisfied sailboat timeshare customer of theirs.
