I'm glad I canceled my membership to Ballys, I ended up going to Metro Fitness. It's a much nicer, less crowded, and cleaner place. I don't have to deal with the kids anymore. The constant throwing weights on the floor, never re-racking, cellphone talking, etc...

the bally's on 6th ave near 23rd is GROSS! it's overcrowded, smelly, and the equipment is old. my visit there was like stepping into a time warp. i don't think anything has changed there since the 80's. Jersey City's Bally's is the Taj Mahal by comparison.
hey maybe u should join my gym,its CLEAN as heck! and its only 75$ a year or 37.50$ for half a year.....features a 30$ million dollar facility......and thats just the gym i go to in chelsea between 9th and 10th ave....once u join there u get access to all the gyms in the 5 boros but im so used to this 1 so i go there.....has an olympic size swimming pool and like 6 floors of different stuff.......weight room is nice ,clean......cardio room is pretty good....no tvs tho...... http://www.nycgovparks.org/facilities/recreationcenters/M260 trust me its worth going here......100%.

WTF this is news!
I just got over a cold and was set to go back tonight. I've heard glowing reviews about the new gym downtown, I think it's called Club Metro. Anyone been?

the bally's sports club at the manhattan mall will not allow regular club members. you need to upgrade to a sports club membership.

I am also a member at Bally's. I called and you can go to the Union City location, you can have your account frozen and or you can possibly get a refund for your membership. You have to call the 1-800 customer service number. The woman I spoke to in Union City said the club might reopen in 2-3 months.
Why would you need to get a note from a doctor to cancel a gym membership?

serious question:
how will bally's reimburse its members? i'm sure many people joined because it was very close to their work or home, and are not willing to go out of their way to work out...

Anyone know where JSQ Bally's members can go that's near public transportation, preferably PATH and NYC MTA? Also, if Bally's members signed up for just a ONE-CLUB pass with the JSQ Bally's as their one club, now that it's burned down, can that pass be honored at other nearby Bally's?

So that's why I thought I smelled egg rolls, chicken chow mein, and won ton soup. Not to reduce the severity of a fire but I remember the Canton Chinese restaurant being a fixture there for so long and it is missed.

Here is the update.
Fire started from a boiler issue with Ashley Stewart and there is lots of water and fire damage to Bally's. My trainer thinks it will be 6 - 8 weeks before it is reopened but nothing definite. Sorry folks - I know it stinks but Union City is our home for now. See you there :)

My trainer called me Saturday and mentioned that the fire was pretty bad and he did not know when it would reopen. I'm certainly hoping it is soon since i have 7 more weeks of training. Will update as I know more.

Fire closes two businesses in historic Journal Square building in Jersey City
By The Jersey Journal April 03, 2010, 6:38PM Jersey City firefighters at the scene of a two-alarm fire around 9 this morning at the historic Hurwitz building in Journal Square. Both the Bally Total Fitness gym and Ashley Stewart Woman clothing store were closed until further notice. A two-alarm fire struck the historic Hurwitz building in Jersey City's Journal Square this morning, closing two businesses until further notice. The fire began in the space between the first-floor ceiling and the second floor of the Bally Total Fitness gym at 918 Bergen Ave. and traveled to the adjacent Ashley Stewart Woman clothing store at 912 Bergen, at the corner of Newkirk Street, Fire Director Armando Roman said. Some 50 firefighters were called to the scene with personnel there from about 9 a.m. to 12:25 p.m., he said. The fire was declared under control at 10:33 a.m. No injuries were reported and the fire's cause is so far undetermined, Roman said. The Bally suffered heavy fire, smoke and water damage, Roman said, and the Ashley Stewart suffered heavy water and smoke damage. Signs left in the windows told patrons the businesses will be closed until further notice. The building was the longtime home of the landmark Canton Tea Garden restaurant and was the subject of a Jersey Journal Legends & Landmarks column last year after redevelopment uncovered its rich history. The building's architect, John T. Rowland, included motifs to mirror his masterwork, the Art Deco old Jersey City Medical Center complex, now the Beacon condominiums.
