Re: Landlord Closing on-site laundry room

Yes my building is rent controlled...1 of the tenants has been here 40 years, and another for 30. I saw the post about the owner harassing tenants....so many of the posts were so rude and unhelpful I gave up looking for any useful info on it :( I will have to look at the lease as far as the laundry room goes

Thank you for the links jerseymom....unfortunately I already have the Tenant's Rights in NJ book...as we have had so many problems with the new owner. I have the building inspector coming out Tuesday for some other issues like the fact that the lights in the hall on my floor are out, and I have to use a flashlight to even unlock my door :(

Landlord Closing on-site laundry room
#3

Just can't stay away

I rent an apartment in a building with a coin operated washer and dryer. The washer and dryer have been here the entire 3 years I have lived here. Today what they called a 30 day notice was put up on the door to the laundry room saying they will be closing the laundry room starting December 1st. Its more like a 20 day notice. Regardless of the notice, from what I understand if the owners choose to just decide to stop letting us use the laundry room it is considered a removal of a tenant amenity and they therefore must reduce our rent. I chose to live in this building in part because it has an onsite laundry room.

The building was recently bought by someone who has been harassing all of us, and has told us he wants us to move. We do not want to move nor do we have to by law. He is just closing the laundry room to be a jerk.

Does anyone know for sure if he does close the laundry room if he must reduce our rent because he is taking away an amenity we pay rent to have????

Does anyone have any advice or opinion about which is cheaper to operate an Electric Base Board Heater or an In Wall AC/ Heater? The examples below are only examples. This is for a small studio apartment say 500sq feet or less.
Thank you.

USER1111 No way in hell is it 1hr and 20 minutes from any PATH station in Jersey City to JFK....Not even at rush hour. Google says 1:35 to JFK using the method you gave and that assumes you live at the Path Station and don't have to spend time getting there. I just did the trio Monday.

I just did the trip on Monday, Memorial Day....it was a long ass almost 2 hour trip each way from JSQ Path Station to WTC then the E train to Sutphin Blvd., and lastly the Airtrain to Terminal 4. It's a bit faster, but more expensive to take the Path to 33rd and then the LIRR @ Penn Station to the Jamaica stop then the Airtrain.

When my sister or other family member comes to town I have them take the Supershuttle from JFK to The Millenium Hilton across the street from the WTC Path Station which costs $21.78
in either direction.

Where to Buy Spanish Turron in Jersey City???

Has anyone seen Spanish Turron in Jersey City in the last few weeks??? If I remember correctly, in years past one of the grocery stores in downtown had it....maybe it was Shop Rite???? I think the brand I bought before was Sanchis Mira here in JC.

I know I can get it at Despana in the city, but it is super expensive there, and I don't want to wait for it to be delivered :)

Thanks.

Thanks but I'm hoping to find a private person who has a truck or van as opposed to haul or zipcar.

Heights, FYI in my current living situation both my roommate and I are on a yearly lease. That would be my ideal situation again. Many rooms for rent on Craigslist at the moment would require a lease. Was your previous post about the Chinese meant to be sarcastic or perhaps something worse?

Hello. Other than Craigslist where do people post looking for roommates these days for here in JC? I'm looking for a room with one or 2 other people in downtown or on the backs side (east side) of Journal Square Path station, the island section like where Magnolia and Waldo streets are. I'd like to stay under $900 a month. Thanks!

If you are just looking for coffee, the brand-new Hudson County Community College library has a Starbucks caf? on the ground floor. But I'm guessing you've already figured that out since you work for the college. The little Dominican restaurant on Summit that is mentioned in this thread makes great caf? con leche.

Ok so the city dropped the ball on not updating the website. Get over it and go help a neighbor. Call the city response number tomorrow and raise hell.

And the city sent out emails yesterday in addition to updating it's FB page. Sure it sucks all the snow and ice, but bitching that the city hasn't updated it's website is pointless. Perhaps there is no new news. Get off here and go buy groceries for a homebound neighbor or shovel someone's walk. Ok if you aren't Dan. He posted the same rant on Facebook so I thought this profile was his.

Dan, the cities Fabebook page was updated yesterday. Unless you and everyone else bitching are shoveling snow off the sidewalks and in front of drains for neighbors who can or won't then hush.

You're right, it doesn't matter so why did you post it?

Your problem is the heavy furniture that you got from your grandmother. You're limiting your options due to that burden - heavy and difficult to move. Maybe someone else in your family can use it, and pay for the moving bills? Think about unloading it and moving on with your life. Good luck.

Just to calrify: We both want to stay in the apartment. I'm not moving and she doesn't want to either. I don't mind living with her. She's the one with the problem.

I spoke to her last night...showed her the laws and the websites that go with them. Her reaction? " I guess we are stuck with each other!" haha ya bitch that's right.

I did, in fact, read the first post. You seem to be confusing possible lease language with the Anti-Eviction Act. There are very few exceptions that judges will respect in these cases, regardless of what's specified on the lease. And as brewster correctly pointed out, one of the co-leaseholders leaving is not one of them.

" I have lived in the apt for 4 years and am on my 3rd roommate. We are both on the lease... "

If one of the roommates will not be on the "new" lease, the landlord has no obligation to renew the lease. The landlord has the right to perform due diligence on the new person (credit check, etc) added to the lease. The new roommate must be on the lease - at least on every lease agreement I've seen.

Reasons why I do not want to move: 2 big ones

I can not afford to move ie pay for movers, I have real furniture I got from om grandmother that is heavy and I live in a 4th floor walk up. I have to pay movers to move. I would also have to shell out another deposit which i do not have as i wont get the deposit my current landlord has for up to 30 days after I move out.

I took our backyard from a place no one in the building used that was full of bricks and trash and cleaned it up so much so that I built raised beds, removed hundreds of pounds of bricks and trash all on my own dime and have turned it into a lovely oasis with rose bushes, and plants flowers and vegetables.

And third. My roommate and I just stay our of each others way. We dont talk. SHe pays her half of the rent directly to the landlord as do I and she pays her half of the bills on time every month.
