Except Grove is almost pitch dark between York and Grand. Crossing over to Marin on Montgomery gives good lighting.

It's a safe walk. My boyfriend lives across the street from there and I live on Marin and I don't feel unsafe even very late at night. It's quiet after the stores and bars close, but in a "the only people you see are out walking their dogs" way, not a "the only people you see are hiding in the shadows waiting to stab you" way. I often work odd hours and I've never had a problem walking home from the PATH.

Grove and Marin are both fine until at least 10. (Standard "no guarantees in life" disclaimer...) Marin probably has less pedestrian traffic but is well lit - better lit on the Montgomery to Grand stretch than Grove is. My wife walks home alone down Marin up until that time and neither one of us worries about it.

Grove is still busy at that hour. There always exceptions, but you should be okay at that hour. A cab will run you $4.

Re: 225 Grand St.
People have started to move in and ~ 100 apartments out of ~300 have been leased according to two independent sources. Warning: The building is apparently not serviced by Comcast.

Take a look at the map on their website. All the restaurants are on the wrong cross streets. Who made this map????? and better yet, why did the developer allow it to be published.

FYI:
225 Grand St. http://www.225grand.net Just saw 225 Grand St. - for lease only. ~350 units Roof-top pool, excercise room, common lounge $200/month attached-garage parking available $500 annual amenities fee 2 BR units start at $2700, but the current offer for July 1 move-in is 13 month-lease for the price of 12 months making the monthly rent for 13 months ~$2500. They just opened up and no one has moved in yet. They didn't budge from the above numbers for me. Any questions, just ask and I'll answer if I know the answer.

THANKS everyone for your input!
We have decided to take the place, although its on grand it has great insulation and top notch window it seems less loud than our current side st place... also this is a 5apt building, which we hear every word in the walk up all the time + everyone buzzing our door by mistake is so annoying...the new place is only 2 per entrance which is awesome. also our top neighbors are very loud right now and we barely heard the neighbor walking upstairs:) + our current place is so badly insulated we hear everyone outside, shouting, slamming doors, cars alarms and the traffic all the time... the grand st place almost seems quieter although way busier!! + rent and el/gas will be cheaper though the place is bigger! Even here on a small side st by van vorst there have been police cars a few times and you here of break ins so none is fully safe anywhere...BUT it felt totally fine walking over there at night. To many pluses to let go...street is not pretty but i think that will be the only -

You want to know about Grand Street? Do a search in this site...
Over the past year, several people were either ran over, or came pretty close to being ran over, including the elderly woman in the hit and run accident by the hospital (JCList Thread Link), the guy who was sent flying by a speeding car at the corner of Washington and Grand and several other close calls across from Liberty Harbor North. The accident that took place at Grand and Washington was specially hair rising. The a-hole that was speeding down Grand ended up INSIDE the little park and his car had to be cut open to get him out. Also, around September, some idiot was speeding while heading West on Grand St and caused a pretty serious accident in which three or four cars were damaged, including two that were parked on Grand.

Old brownstones on Grand are gorgeous and well made.
Traffic noise is probably horrendous, especially in Spring and Fall with the windows open. Hospital noise and police sirens will be incessant. Probably the least safe street in the entire area for a stroll late at night, especially if you stroll West.

We lived on Grand Street for 4 years (moved last year) in between Washington and Warren. We were never bothered by the noise on Grand but our bedroom was not facing the street. We were never bothered by noise at all. Before Grand Street we lived across from Van Vorst Park on the ground floor and that was loud. We had people hanging out in the park and walking around outside our apartment and drunk people ring our buzzer at 4am, many times. I would say that Grand Street is fine, my only concern would be the fire station and hospital.

definitely.... I am not knocking either location - I like them both and if my current apt was on grand street I would take it in a minute I also thought parking was easier over there (but I lived across from the firehouse / OTC school so that was 1/2 a block that had no houses so there were less cars competing for the spots also I know all about living on corners - grew up in boston on a corner down the street from the hospital between the bus that stopped a few houses away and the ambulances my room was the loudest and the dirtiest.... I repainted and then moved a few months later - you could see the outline of every picture on my wall after only 3-4 months! yuck

Trading one for the other...trade off. Living on a corner property isn't any easier, you get the best of both worlds including garbage & recycling pick-ups. Now you have twice the noise with having both streets invloved and both being two way streets it's like having a carbon foot print.

I lived on grand for 2 yrs and then moved to 4th st..... I never really noticed how loud it was till I moved and all of a sudden I started sleeping all night, falling asleep easier etc
as some one else mentioned its all about where your bedroom is - front of the house and its going to be car & truck noises (there was a pot hole hear me and my place would shake at times from trucks hitting it), there is a fire house & hospital on grand so sirens leaving & coming back....and trash (but that is the same everywhere) I did like the neighborhood and felt "closer" to the grove st downtown/ train (I was .25 miles and now I am .32 so a MINOR change in distance to the PATH entrance) my advice is that if you like the place and the noise is an issue for you invest in one of these.... http://www.amazon.com/Marpac-SleepMat ... Conditioner/dp/B000KUHFGM best $50 I even spent (though it does make sleeping anywhere else suck)

i moved to grand st. from a quieter part of town. it is definitely noisier than other streets and will take some time to get used to, but eventually it will become bearable. i'm not awakened by the noise but sometimes you may have to turn the volume up a bit on the TV to hear it over the street noise. there are constant sirens, but again, it's nothing you can't get used to.

We've lived on Grand for 2 years and I don't find the noise bad at all. It would help to have quality windows maybe, but I don't really notice the noise - even when the windows are open. And especially since the re-paving. As for safety, I think its a safe block.

I would advise against it as Grand is a major artery and you will soon tire of the speeding cars and traffic.

We've been living on Grand for over 2 years now and are a block east from barrow. The noise is not that bad, it's just the usual sounds of city living. But we are lucky to have our bedrooms on the inside so we don't hear anything from our bedroom. It really depends on your floorplan. If you have the bedroom window facing Grand, you may be bothered with noise at night. But if it's only your living area facing Grand, then it's fine.

I second that. It depends how close you are to Jersey Ave. Ambulences all throughout the night. They will wake you up

I can only imagine the ambulance sirens at 3am.... You'd be a block from the JC Medical Center, and the ambulance drivers blast those sirens at all hours for no apparent reason.

Not sure how loud it is at night, but that block is safe.

I never lived over there, so I couldn't say if Grand Street is so much loud as in the middle of nowhere.
But! This place IS available now, though, and I lived there a few years ago. Just trying to help my friend (the owner) find a good tenant. Check it out: http://newyork.craigslist.org/jsy/abo/1606791225.html And I happen to know that everybody else who lives there (7 other units in building) are very friendly and laid-back, for whatever that's worth to you.
