Whats the big deal!? I dont think the sure present any danger to the power lines, and in my opinion they adorn and personalize cityscapes just like graffitti. I like the shoes on the power lines, they make me think of NYC, Brooklyn and yes, Jersey City...

I think it would be a good idea if the city could do something about the sneakers on the utility wires. You can read snopes all you want but sometimes people buy into urban myths, like some people in this thread. Except some people might not be so innocent, and might decide that the presence of sneakers on wires is basically an open invitation to break whatever laws they feel like breaking, up to and possibly including drug dealing and property crimes.
What department would be responsible for this? Is there a way to fine people for this "wire litter"? - J.R. Martinez, Esq.

I dunno, I've seen them up on lines in places with no buildings, so...
More likely it's just a spot where either: a) somebody's shoes wore out b) a nerd was caught by jocks c) a baller got shot, yo!

Hi,
Someone told me that sneakers being hang on telephone line indicate that drugs are sold at the location. Is that true? If so, I would be surprised because I see them around the corner from my apartment!! Thanks. Atsushi

I don?t know when this rumor began, but I know from experience that we used to throw our shoes up on the wires here in JC back when I was a kid in the 80s. There were a pair or two outside my very house, and trust me, mom and dad were neither selling nor marking gang territory.
It was just something to do. Someone mentioned boredom, and I?d say that?s about right. And, I can?t imagine that something that was so common suddenly turned into drug dealer markings. Besides, wouldn?t that be a huge tip-off to the authorities? Most dealers are smarter than that. As far as gang tags? That?s a maybe if, say, like a neighborhood is lined with Red sneakers and nothing else. Or, blue sneakers and nothing else or whatever gang colors/insignia?that might make sense. Otherwise, it?s an urban legend, and I wouldn't worry about it. But, you guys should try it sometime. It?s not as easy to get them up there as you might think. And, it is kinda fun when you take turns. Of course, it is destruction of property.

When I was a kid in the 60's in another state far, far away, there were sneakers hanging on the wires even then (in a non-gang, non drug dealer town). I always figured it was dumb thing kids do. Like wrapping trees and mailboxes in toilet tissue. hahaha.

It's not just drug dealing. They are also a sign to mark gang territory. You can google reputable sights that help citizens and law enforcement fight gang activity and you should find it. It's like tagging in some places. Regardless of whether you believe that it is a sign of criminal activity, it is certainly a sign of neglect in a neighborhood. Just like trash everywhere and houses that are not kept up, it is a sign that it will be easier to get away with committing crime there.

Since PSE&G was doing work nearby, I actually had them remove the shoes at Colgate & 1st. I called on Monday about the shoes on 1st street in between Monmouth and Newark. As of yesterday, the shoes were still there.

There were a couple places at one time that used that for a short time but it was probably less then .001% of the sneakers that represented drug corners even then. Like most urban myths it is based on a small amount of truth that as word spreads people become more worried then they need to be. Think of it more like the spray painted strike boxes the kids put up, it is only a sign there are bored kids in the area.

OK, in the 80's, shoes meant you were in the vicinity of a drug dealer. Umm, not so much anymore. Remember, drug dealers in 2009 have such neat gadgets as cell phones, blackberrys, and beyond. I think the cops would have caught onto the ol' "shoe on a telephone wire" trick by now.
Nowadays, it's teenager wannabees just doing it because it's cool. I am not a fan of that look in my neighborhood.

not all the "lines" on the utility pole are "electric". 1st you need to identify what cable are coming off the pole. cause verizon isn't going to take them off comcast who isn't going to take them off pseg's. you call the associated companies customer services and they will take it from their. good luck...

You know when some kid or vandal ties the laces of an old pair of shoes together and throws them onto the power line?
