Two different hawks if you ask me. The second one downtown here has less white feathers and no red tail. Mom and dad hawk perhaps?

If the cat saw it coming the raptor could get seriously injured, perhaps fatally...then again, depends on the size, health and determination of the kitty

I have noticed fewer feral cats.

Cats are no match for these birds.

I am not really sure why this became linked up with a story involving an "exotic bird" in "Journal Square". Red tail Hawks are indigenous to North America and First and Erie are located Downtown.

who would win... hawk or stray cat? or would the hawk have enough sense not to piss off a cat?

I dunno myself in metro areas but when I was visiting my sisters home in CT last summer 2 Red Tails were circling a little too close for comfort over my tiny dogs whom I was playing with in the back yard. The internet lists 2 opinions it seems, some say no way, others warn small dogs owners to be careful:

Thanks for sharing.

I thought that I had seen two turkey vultures circling very high above the oaks. I wonder if it was actually this guy and his girlfriend and not turkey vultures.

Is it true that hawks have been known to attack tiny dogs in metro areas?

It's a juvenile red tailed hawk (tail feathers get red as they mature). They are moving around alot this time of year looking for food and JC is typical habitat. They are around more often than people are aware of.

Excellent moment capture!

Nice, great capture.

In the past couple of years while hiking around the area have noticed Bald Eagles in a couple spots within 50 miles of here. Seems like the environment in this area may be making a comeback.

Looks like the same bird I saw. Distinct markings on his back feathers. He doesn't look full-grown either..

Bird of prey on Journal Square

A bird believed to be a red-tailed hawk was spotted this morning on Journal Square in Jersey City, Monday, August 24, 2009. Here, it was seen perched on top of The Jersey Journal building photographed through the window of the Blume Goldfaden Berkowitz Donnelly Fried & Forte office on the sixth-floor of 26 Journal Square. -- REENA ROSE SIBAYAN / THE JERSEY JOURNAL

I saw a hawk fly out from the bushes in front of an apartment on Monmouth & Montgomery last week. Probably the same guy. Awesome creature.

It's a Cooper's Hawk, I'm pretty sure.
I have a picture of one eating a Mockingbird on my back deck a few years ago, not far from this one.

A true city dweller, attitude and all. "you lookin at me?"

My son regularly startles me when we're driving around town with shouts of "look, a hawk!!" But they're always up in the sky not lunching on a sedan. He keeps a raptor silhouette identifier book in the seat pocket in front of him.

Actually looks more like a Red Shouldered Hawk, but I am no expert, who knows. It was pretty fearless, I tried to get a little closer and as soon as I took a step toward it, it turned right at me and took 2 steps toward me.

I feel sorry for the car owner that has to clean up a pigeon corpse off of his or her car.

Great picture.

Exotic bird sighting in Jersey City

by The Jersey Journal
Thursday September 10, 2009, 10:52 AM

Resized Image
A red-tailed hawk makes himself at home earlier this week above the PATH train trestle in Journal Square. Reader Melvin T. Taylor snapped these shots of the hawk that has been spotted around Journal Square on Tuesday at about 11 a.m. In these photos the hawk is keeping an eagle eye on activity near the intersection of Summit and Sip avenues.
