Best to let it be -- they were unable to catch it. I hope that it can find its way to Liberty State Park.

The turkey is currently strolling down 5th between Jersey and Coles. Do the cops still care? Or should we just let it do its thing?

A similar bird was spotted this morning in Greenville on the roof of one of the buildings on the NJCU campus. Same bird or a relative?

Looks like the JCPD has just as hard a time catching drugged up turkeys as they do catching turkeys selling drugs.
HEY-YOH!!!

Some pictures of the turkey invasion...
JCPD did not dart the bird when it was on the wires. It simply took a huge dump and flew onto a rooftop.

speaking of JC birds, the falcons should have eggs any day now.

Ring-necked Pheasant aren't native, but still fairly common across the northern parts of the country. Over many decades they escaped or intentionally released for hunting. There are quite a few in Liberty State Park.
Turkey's are native and you can find them in LSP too. In JC over the course of a year you can find eagles, seals, loons, egrets, possums, and a few hundred other species.

I sure hope the Jersey Journal didnt spell "Eighth" like that in the paper.

There is one strolling down 1st street back near the Turnpike overpass. Not sure that Pheasants are native to JC so I assume it is either some sort of pet or lost in some way.
Just for the record, pheasants are native to Asia, thrive in Liberty Park in significant numbers. Pheasants and wild turkeys are following train tracks to points beyond.

Actually, I'm baffled that anyone would call animal control to catch a turkey or a pheasant.
Or that animal control or the JCPD would come at all. Does anyone think that if I told them there was a Canada Goose downtown, someone would come and get it? Or did they think it was someone's pet?

I'm honestly not sure if it was a wild turkey or a pheasant. I quickly saw it. just did a google image search and they are similar looking enough for me not to be sure from the distance I saw it at

It could be the turkey, but if you sure its a pheasant there are wild ones that live by the train tracks and Liberty State Park.

I called animal control, but it just rang. I also am not sure the pheasant just doesn't end up dumped in Lincoln Park if they answer

Turkey leads cops on wild goose chase
Monday, April 06, 2009 A wild turkey created a stir in Downtown Jersey City yesterday afternoon when it appeared at Eighth and Monmouth streets. The turkey led members of the police's Emergency Services Unit - and local residents - on quite a chase, at one point perching itself on power lines high above the street. Crowds gathered outside homes in Downtown area. Some people snapped pictures on their cell phones. Advertisement Some members of the crowd were confused and rooting for the fowl, saying, "It's not Thanksgiving time" and "Leave him alone." The bird was finally popped with a tranquilizer dart. While still woozy from the tranquilizer, the bird flew briefly to a nearby rooftop and then swooped low to the ground. As police moved in with large nets to pick it up, the bird scampered into the woods behind Dickinson High School, witnesses said. It was not clear if the bird was caught as of press time.
