I live a few apts down from White Star and it's by far the best bar/bar food in the area. I was talking with one of the bar tenders last night and they did just get approval for outdoor seating. For those who live nearby and are concerned about noise, my neighbor informed me that outdoor seating will only be available until 9:30pm.

White Star is - by far - the friendliest and most consistent local spot in all of downtown. Any place can have a bad night, but if you bring a problem/issue/suggestion to Matt's attention, it will be addressed.

Where else can a youngish crowd find such fairly priced food; a fight-free environment; no drug sales; great buy-backs; bartenders that don't change every other week, and an owner that is on-site and gives a damn every single day?

+1

The owner is great and the staff are friendly and attentive. It's a great neighborhood bar/restaurant. Love it !

I must respectfully disagree with your assessment of the wings.

These are easily the best wings in Jersey City that I have had. And I lived in Buffalo for 10 years, so I've had a few wings.

Great bar for football-watching too!

i think their wings blow as well. just because you're from buffalo doesn't make you a wing expert. maybe the bellisimos created the wing concept, but no one ever said they, or that buffalo, produced the BEST wings!

Atomic will make better wings for sure. i've never liked white star wings. their burgers have always been very good.

PJ Ryans makes a good and cheap enough burger/fries combo.

As for ownership, worlds apart.

Matt (met him once when Paul sold) seems like a good guy, concerned with his bar. Paul was busy doing OTHER things. Some of the food items have slipped, like the aforementioned Nachos (which ruled), but overall, it has been a tremendous step up.

Had delivery over the weekend. HORRIBLE!!!

I eaten there before and it's been good. Even ordered delivery before and it's been ok.

This weekend's delivery was horrible. The pulled pork was almost unedible and the casaer salad was worse than one of those salads in a bag.

Not sure what they are doing but I won't be back for quite sometime.

Love it. It is by far my favorite delivery restaurant in Jersey City. I have it on speed dial. They have me on speed dial, too which is cool. They save your address, and match it to your phone number so it's an easy transaction.

Their margherita pizza is great, and the wings are tastey, although sometimes they are wimpy in size. Oh yeah, and try their empanadas...and cheeseburgers. Very good, and consistent. That's the key word here....something many other JC restaurants lack.

For the record, Matt has owned the place for at least 3 years at this point.

i was addicted to their nachos and guacamole before the new owner. I would seriously be craving them so badly that my husband had NO CHOICE but to bring me there. Unfortunately they are not as amazing as they were. I wish they were cause i do get the cravings... but am always a bit disappointed. Just not up to the same par as they were....

My wife and I regularly go to the White Star. We're not crazy about the place, but if you want a beer and burger at a decent price, there's not a lot to choose from in JC these days. We keep our expectations low.

However, on Friday, not only was my pulled pork sandwich almost inedible -- really, disgustingly greasy -- but the server added an extra $5 to our bill. We caught it, and the waitress gave us a quick "my mistake" explanation -- but I'm left wondering how can you accidentally just add $5 to a bill?

Maybe it was an honest mistake, but I just wanted to give you folks a heads up to check your tabs a bit more closely.

Just wonering, is there any other place out there to get a burger and beer without dropping over $20? Ninth and Coles is a disaster. Hamilton Park Grill, ditto. Skinner's Loft is good, but a decided step above a burger joint in price. Same with the Lighthorse.

Is The White Star really the best we can hope for?

they may prepared and sauced fine, but the wings themselves are tiny and barely worth the effort of eating.

we call them 'crow wings'

if they used better bigger wings I would have no problem. these are just too small and tend to get dried out/rubbery because they can not hold up to the cooking method.

my 2 cents

to each their own though, of course (and living in a place doensn't necessarily give you good taste)

sidenote: "best in JC" ain't saying much. they probably are, which is kinda sad.

I am so in love with Chrissy, the blonde bartender at White Star. I wouldn't want to get into a fight with her though ...

If only they would bring back their flank steak with tequila sauce over steak fries!!!

Aside from that, Whitestar is a great local bar with a good scene of locals and younger people who don't feel the need to crush you at the bar as your getting a beer...

Last evening some friends of mine and I went to the White Star for burgers and beers. Our waiter, the tall thin guy, covered all of the tables himself, and they were all occupied. This guy worked hard, got all the food out timely, was attentive and never seemed the slightest bit out of control. He is totally the standard for all waiters in this town.

prices went up last week, can't really blame him though, its still a great deal for delicious food. maybe now that the price went up a $1 fewer parents with young kids will come by, at least I can hope.

As an original poster, I can't love WhiteStar more, but I had a bad experience for the first time there last night.

I don't know if they didn't have enough waitress/bartenders, but this one waitress was very rude. She gave me an attitude when I asked for a glass of water, and took 10 min to bring it (after reminding her).

And my Corona came without lime. The food was slightly cold...

I know they are very popular right now, but I really hate to see them going down...

I hope it never happens again.

I miss my fav bartender Holy...

Most of them are really nice. Its just one of them who is too busy flirting with the guy who works there. I think he is the owner maybe. She is just not nice at all, kind of rude actually.

I was in there for the first time...and yes the pizza is delecious. It is really hard to get a drink though. The one bartender was paying more attention to the guy behind the bar than the customers.
