I wish the Hollywood Fried Chicken place would close down. For a number of reasons:
1. The place is an eyesore even with their "remodeling" 2. The place has been the site of loud bickering and even fights since I have lived in JC. 3. The food is waaay unhealthy. Do they even change the fat they use to fry the chicken?

Tried the fried chicken at Irma's for the first time today. All I can say is OMG!!!!!! It was amazing. I also got collard greens and mac + cheese as sides and german chocolate cake for dessert. A delicious, albeit coma-inducing meal. For a more polla la brasa style I still vote for Goody as stated above but I don't live near that place anymore. Around these parts you can get a reasonable facsimile @ Gusta Latina on West Side Ave.
Another surprise treat - Mr. Gusta on Kennedy right by JSQ train station. Looks scarygreasy, tastes great.

It's not fried, but I adore the pollo la brasa @ Goody on Newark St. The tostones are good to. Prices are cheap. They deliver to downtown + Hamilton Park.

The manager told me they did but I haven't been back to check. (This was about 2 years ago). I think it's just good practice for restaurants to indicate which items contain peanut because of the severity of the reactions and how common this allergy has become.

Curious, has your son had a reaction to peanut oil in the past? I think you'd be surprised how many people use it to deep fry. I know for sure Chik-Fil-A does for sure.
It should be fine if it's processed to remove all the protein, but I can certainly understand that you'd want to avoid any risk.

You can believe or think what you want, but I'm a big fan of Hollywood Fried Chicken of late. The restaurant has been a fixture on the corner of Newark and Jersey Ave. for at least a dozen years or better and the new management does a fine job with their product which is additive and salt free. Check them out (Saher, Malik, and Abdul) and you will be pleasantly surprised with the food they prepare and serve.

had soul flavors fried chicken friday, and it was decent, but for the price, not great.
somewhat dry. they use peanut oil, so it doesn't get all crackly like the good ole unhealthy stuff you can get at crown/hollywood/newark, etc. they don't keep the skin on, i don't think, similar to my mom's style. overall, not great for the price. decent flavor.

Besy fried chicken is still the fast-food benchmark of excellence: Popeye's at the Newport mall.

after much anomosity against this place, I am going to say that the fried chicken meal at Soul Flavors is finally up to a reasonable standard. It had mostly been a price point/portion issue for me in the past, which they seem to have improved upon. Got takeout on Sat and it was a sizable portion for the $12+. Side of greens was OK for the price ($+), as were the buscuits (not great, but servicable).
Flavor wise, I thought the chicken was great. Preperation is a bit perplexing though, especially with the 30+ minute wait: obviously fried at some point, it is then finished in a convection oven for some amount time. Seemed strange that it was not just a re-heat or crisp-up... they appeared to be completing the cooking process (saw the cook checking doneness several times). In addition, after a 5 minute walk home with the chicken sealed in a plastic comtainer (think plastek salad bowl) it had lost all crispness, an essential feature of fried chicken (or anything fried, really). anyway, I will say the taste was great and the portion was on point, so I will be back.

so i'm eating Hollywood/Crown Fried Chicken right now from the place next to the "It's Greek to Me Place."
It's called "Hollywood" but the boxes they serve you the chicken in say "Crown." From here on out it's HollyCrown. I went to the official Crown Website, but they do not list this place, so I'm thinking they are either buying up Crown boxes, and using the name (somehow legally, or no one cares), or maybe the website is not up to speed. Either way, it's $3.99 for a 3-Piece (2 Breasts and a leg), and it's dang good.

Nuthin wrong with some fried chicken. And yea, they're cheap and open about 20 hours/day. Nice folks at the counter too. Eaten there a a lot over the years, never once seen anything but politeness from them.

I've had it a number of times and it's pretty good for what it is.
I usually will get a 2 piece deal (breast and thigh) with a biscuit. That combo is only about 3 bucks! Also, you can't beat the hours -- they're practically always open! Their menu says they open daily at 10am, and they stay open until 3am Sun-Thurs and 6am Fri-Sat. Happy eating!

isn't that hollywood chicken? kennedy is on sip/summit, though they are ideally the same thing. i have kennedy and another us chicken (bergen ave) within walking distance from my apartment...evil thing!

CROWN FRIED CHICKEN
If you are to scared to try it (or stand in line) then your heart is to weak to try the best CHICKEN not just in Jersey City but the TRI-STATE. Note to SCARED PERSONS get there before sundown!

When my hubby and I went to Soul Flavors - we got the fried chicken - they gave you 5 full pieces! They said they heard some feedback that the portion was too small - so they increased it...I think you can also get a double order as well. I don't know if they changed it, haven't been there in a few months as we are on diets :)

Hollywood - not great but reliable and cheap
soul flavors - rediculous prices. chicken is fine, pretty good actualy but i can not justify spending that kind of money on such small portions. would kill for a korean place around here. love the style, bummed that my beloved BBQ on 7th @ 23rd just closed.
