Yeah, well, when I signed my lease during the day it didn't look any worse than my old pad in New Brunswick, and I was only a block away from the safety of patrolled big box land. I had no idea about how bad the bar crowd was and literally almost had a breakdown my first night after moving in since I didn't have any furniture and it echoed through the length of my apartment. It's only gotten worse since and now I don't even feel comfortable walking around during the day. I'll be moving in with my boyfriend when I move out, and have 25% more income now than when I moved in, so Paulus Hook won't be too big of a difference for income-to-rent ratio. Definitely not moving to Journal Square, and I already lived in the heights and hated it (and the bus service.) I know there are cheaper places closer to the Grove Street path, but I seriously need my peace and quiet

are you talking about the area by the liquor store / salvation army? lmao, damn.. i dont know anyone who would call that up and coming. if i were you i'd probably move out of there too. although there's no need to go somewhere 'up and coming' or expensive like paulus hook. for example, journal square or parts of the heights can give you peace of mind

(a) She, not he. If I were a man I'd be slightly less intimidated, I think,
(b) Indeed a liberal, albeit one who knows when it's time to exercise her rights
(c) Yes, I don't live in Paulus Hook, I live by the Tunnel.
(d) I moved to this area knowing there was a homeless shelter here. That's not what I have problems with.

I have problems with the bullet hole in my window, the bullet in my wall, the man who stands outside of Burke's screaming and trying to get into fights with people who walk into the bar, the people who think it's ok to pull up near by bedroom window at 3 am and blast their stereo systems so loud my bed literally shakes. The tipping point is the recent break in and armed robbery of someone in my neighborhood who is the same age as me.

Bleeding heart as I am, I think I have a right and a responsibility to protect myself.

i read it as if he's moving from one part of jc into paulus hook, and if that doesn't work then he's moving out of jc altogether. although i'd hate to see what happens when he sees the infamous paulus hook homeless person on a bench

You think Paulus Hook has gone severely downhill? Did you see some black people or something?

Believe me, I'm out (or at least to Paulus Hook) as soon as my lease expires. I was told this place was on the up-and-up but my neighborhood has gone severely downhill.

I'd love bear spray, but I'm pretty sure it falls outside of the limits of the law posted, not being pocked sized :-\

Welcome to JC, where Librerals and crimimals hold hands.
Just move out, if you can! I wish I could. Get Bear spray it shoots 20 to 25 feet and is sold in many NJ places. Get a few cans, as you will use it often, until you want to move out.

You can get stuff like online at Quartermaster.

www.qmuniforms.com

I'm told you can't really guarantee the reliability of the stuff you may buy in local stores. This is a law enforcement supply store. It's under Equipment/Personal Protection. I am saving up for the nifty pink Taser.

I believe the hardware store on Newark Ave has it for about $5.

i agree.

if i was threatened, the last thing i would be thinking is, "is this going to be legal?"

i'd rather get a fine or whatever other slap on the hand involved with using pepper spray than getting beaten to the ground by a group of would-be attackers.

I agree, shoot first ask questions later that's how I roll, the element of surprise is everything. Unfortunately for them, everyone I have maced so far was just walking up to me to ask for directions but hey, you can't be too careful. I graciously repeat the directions a few times while they are sitting on the curb rubbing their eyes so they will remember them 45 minutes later when their vision returns.

New Jersey Code of Criminal Justice Title 2C Chapter 39, Section 6, exemptions subsection i is where that text comes from. See this for context and search for the word "chemical" to find the passage. To be sure of the circumstances in which usage is ok, see 2C:3-5 and 2C:3-6 for the codes allowing reasonable use of force in defense of self and property here.

As I figure you travel into NYC as well:

NEW JERSEY: Legal with restrictions. Any non-felon 18 or over may possess for your protection ?one pocket-sized device which contains and releases not more than three-quarters of an ounce of chemical substance not capable of lethal use or of inflicting serious bodily injury, but rather is intended to produce temporary physical discomfort or disability through being vaporized or otherwise dispensed in the air?.

NEW YORK: Legal with restrictions. The possession by persons who are not felons or who have not been convicted of an assault, 18 or over for the protection of person or property and its otherwise lawful use is legal. The definition is ?a pocket sized spray device which contains and releases a chemical or organic substance which is intended to produce temporary physical discomfort or disability through being vaporized or otherwise dispensed in the air. There are certain labeling requirements. Sales require both a seller?s license and the completion by a purchaser of a registration form. New York residents may only purchase from licensed Firearms Dealers or licensed Pharmacists in that state. No more than two sprays may be sold at any one time to a single purchaser.

I don't know what the actual statutes are, but I'm sure someone here can find them.

NEW JERSEY: Legal with restrictions.

Any non-felon 18 or over may possess for the purpose of self-defense "one pocket-sized device which contains and releases not more than three-quarters of an ounce of chemical substance not ordinarily capable of lethal use or of inflicting serious bodily injury, but rather is intended to produce temporary physical discomfort or disability through being vaporized or otherwise dispensed in the air". Section 2C:39-6i.

Does anyone know if/when it is allowable to use pepper spray in JC? I live near Lincoln Park and would like to go running without fear. There has been a rash of shootings, muggings, holdups, dog maulings and the such. Can I use it to threaten people? Where/when can I not use it? I would think the Path and Bus are unacceptable, although those are probably the times I want to use it most, hahaha but I guess you can't use it if people annoy you. Anyhoo, if anyone has any clue as to when it is acceptable please respond. Also is it really a deterrent? I want to make sure I won't be charged for using it if I percieve that I am being threatened?

Cheers!
