Re: A tax-free reimbursement of $240 per year - just for riding your bike to work?

Just walk it or take a cab since you can afford it.

Man... I used to be a big asshole on this board until people like Willy Lopez and fat-ass-bike started hanging out and I realized how shitty it was. I hope you get your shit together and realize that when times are tough, putting people down anonymously doesn't actually help you in the long run. It doesn't come close. Get over yourself.

That said, I have a few things to add...

1.) WORK - Not everyone has to go to NYC every day for work. If you do, don't worry. The PATH isn't as bad as driving to work every day, so don't feel bad about it. You can feel bad about the $240 though. I'm employed by the state of NJ and I ride my bike to work every day, rain or snow or cold or shine, because I have no choice. Public transit doesn't take me where I need to go. Newark, Kearny, Hoboken, wherever. If we all lived in California it would be great, but bike commuting sucks. $240 doesn't even come close to covering the misery of having to ride our streets every single day. If you can do it, great. If you can't but really want to, move to Brooklyn. This really isn't even an option for most people living in JC, unless you really want to do the 20-30 mile land route over the GWB. I'm not even sure why this thread is here.

2.) GROCERIES. Riding a bike to the grocery store the easiest thing in the world. Go to a bike shop, buy the biggest messenger bag they have, and you can get used to doing all your shopping by bike the first time you do it. I live over by 1st and Brunswick, and at this point I'll only shop at the A&P north of Newport after too many horror stories from the stores closer to me. My last trip there I bought: 5lb bag of onions; four 10oz. cans of black beans; celery; broccoli; two cans diced tomatoes; 1/2 gallon of milk; one pound of tofu; eight pack of AA's. It was 22 degrees out. Was it a pain in the ass? Yes. But our bodies are based on the millenniums of torture our ancestors went through back when they had to harvest/hunt all of their own food, and you'd be surprised how much you're capable of if you mentally force yourself into believing that you have no other choice.

3.) EXERCISE - Get used to doing normal shit like grocery shopping, riding your bike to bars (especially Hoboken.. cabs to Maxwell's/DC's/wherever get tiresome very quickly), going to the park, whatever. You won't even notice that you're getting exercise if you actually learn to enjoy the ride. The only reason I'm in shape is because, as physically demanding as biking can be (and it's usually not with our zero-grade streets), the fun of rolling around the streets and having a vastly improved scale of mobility easily overrides any physical discomfort that comes from exerting yourself when you're not used to it.

Anyway... enough ranting. I hope that whenever that alleged grove street bike shop opens you guys will consider buying a bike and actually using it. Stay away from Target bikes unless you have a full bike repair kit ready to go the day you bring your POS home. Any questions about biking in this sad town of ours, please don't hesitate to send me a message.

New Jersey Code of Criminal Justice Title 2C Chapter 39, Section 6, exemptions subsection i is where that text comes from. See this for context and search for the word "chemical" to find the passage. To be sure of the circumstances in which usage is ok, see 2C:3-5 and 2C:3-6 for the codes allowing reasonable use of force in defense of self and property here.

Lastly, haters of all kinds are worse then hipsters and their glasses tattoos and recycled clothes. Or did i make that point already. fIND SOMETHING WORTH COMPLAINING ABOUT, LIKE INCOME TAX OR STANDING AT A CONCERT AND BEING PEE'D ON.

Glasses and tattoos automatically makes you a hipster? Uh oh. At least all of my clothes were bought new.

I had to read that about five times until I understood it.

Look at your original lease. Does it contain any language prohibiting subletting any or all portions of the apartment?

Sounds like something you should have talked to your landlord about when the roommate moved out, though now would be as good of a time as any to talk to him/her.

If the fact that I am not an internerd and can monitor and contribute to blogs and forums regularly makes me a parasite then so be it. Thanks for the insult you internerd. BTW...how do I find Yahoo answers?

Seriously thanks to all of the people that offered real advice.

My point was that this is a community forum, not the Homework Hotline.

Want some real advice?

THE RENT IS TOO HIGH. I pay less than that for a large 2 bedroom downtown. Nobody is calling because people are wising up to the fact that JSQ is still kind of a dump and will be for the foreseeable future.

I hope this helps, since you're soooooo busy :*(

PS - "internerd?" Let me guess...

Was the yogurt in single-serve packages? That's the only thing I can think of. Wheat Thins and mayo are obviously bulk purchases... who knows? Google doesn't seem to help very much. Maybe you should call somebody at the grocery store.. I've always found management at grocery stores to be unbelievably helpful when it comes to obscure questions about the way things are run. Your only choices are pretty much the Nine Lives shirt (supporting a local business, skater or not, +1), the Cafe Press shirts (re-appropriated "I <3 Jesus Christ" shirts originally targeted towards born again teenagers, -1), or you could make your own (sounds like work, -1).

From Sales and Use Tax (N.J.S.A.54:32B-1 et seq.): [link] "Major exemptions include: ... unprepared food and food ingredients purchased for human consumption; ... " The keyword there is "unprepared". The Arizona iced tea has already been brewed, sugared, bottled, etc. Boxed and bagged or loose tea would not be subject to sales tax.

Really?

>>Why do we press harder on a remote control when we know the batteries are almost dead?

A: During periods of no activity, sufficient chemical mixing occurs in alkaline batteries to allow a higher current flow than during the previous low peak.

>>Why do banks charge a fee on 'insufficient funds' when they already know there is not enough money?

A: They know you'll be getting more money soon.

>>Why does someone believe you when you say there are four billion stars; but have to check when you say the paint is still wet?

A: Because they know the stars 'fact' is wrong and assume everything else you say is as well.

>>Why doesn't Tarzan have a beard?

Tarzan was played by a modern human.

>>Why does Superman stop bullets with his chest, but ducks when you throw a revolver at him?

A: Poor script writing.

>>Why do Kamikaze pilots wear helmets?

A: They were usually given crash orders without warning, or may decide to crash in the middle of an operation that they previously assumed would be successful.

>>If people evolved from apes, why are there still apes?

A: Modern apes are also descendants of a past species of primates, and are not directly related to us.

>>Why is it that no matter what color bubble bath you use the bubbles are always white?

A: The color of bubbles has to do with the refraction of light inside the surface of the bubble, in a water layer between the lipid layers making up both the inner and outer surfaces of the bubble itself. This layer is almost always 1 molecule wide, smaller than the wavelength of any specific color of light. Therefore, bubbles are not white, but are rather colorless.

>>Is there ever a day that mattresses are not on sale?

A: No.

>>Why do people constantly return to the refrigerator with hopes that something new to eat will have materialized?

A: Many people have roommates.

>>Why do people keep running over a string a dozen times with their vacuum cleaner, then reach down, pick it up, examine it, then put it down to give the vacuum one more chance?

A: Because walking over to the garbage can is harder.

>>Why is it that no plastic bag will open from the end on your first try?

A: There is a 50/50 chance of getting the right end in any sufficiently random bag sample group.

>>How do those dead bugs get into those enclosed light fixtures?

A: They find openings that are much smaller than a rather larger human being is programmed to notice / search for.

>>When we are in the supermarket and someone rams our ankle with a shopping cart then apologizes for doing so, why do we say, 'It's all right?' Well, it isn't all right, so why don't we say, 'That really hurt, why don't you watch where you're going?'

A: Because, unlike here on the internet, it's difficult to create conflict and be a jerk to someone's face in a public setting over a fairly trivial matter.

>>Why is it that whenever you attempt to catch something that's falling off the table you always manage to knock something else over?

A: Our natural instincts and reaction time / mobility are rusty from centuries of sitting around doing nothing.

>>In winter why do we try to keep the house as warm as it was in summer when we complained about the heat?

A: The difference in humidity changes our perception of temperature between summer and winter.

>>How come you never hear father- in- law jokes?

A: For the same reason there's no antonym for "misogyny".

And my FAVORITE...
