Thank you all so much for your suggestions. I appreciate all the different ideas. My son is really interested in the breakfast program. It seems like the right fit for him.

nycares.org has a million volunteer opportunites to pick from. He would have to attend an orientation, but it's worth it!Quote:

Grace Van Vorst does a breakfast program for the hungry every saturday and sunday morning in the parish hall (erie near 2nd). My husband and i do the third sunday every month and i get more out of it than the people who come to the breakfast do i think. You can help cook, or serve, or wash dishes, whatever your kid is comfortable with. Everyone is pretty laid back and i have signed quite a few forms for kids doing community service for school who come volunteer. It's from 7am to @ 9:15am saturday and sunday. There is a different coordinator for each day and you can just show up that morning and go to the kitchen and introduce yourself.

Disabled American Veterans hospitals always look for voluteers:
The nearest facility to Jersey City is the East Orange VA Medical Center. "You may contact the Voluntary Service Program Manager, Tyrone Steed at 973-676-1000, extension 1597. If you are interested in transporting veterans to and from their medical appointments, you may contact Robert E. MacDonald, Hospital Service Coordinator at 973-676-1000, extension 1966. Please visit our website at www.dav.org. You may navigate to the Volunteer area to view volunteer opportunities. If you are interested, we also support the Jesse Brown Memorial Youth Scholarship program which can be found on the website. You may contact the Department of New Jersey at 609-396-2885 or your local chapter for the Local Veterans Assistance Program or any additional questions you may have."

I think the minimum age for a Habitat for Humanity volunteer is 17. They're building houses here in JC. That could be a really rewarding experience for a teenager.
and let's please ignore the ridiculous "community service = slavery" hijack.

Is he allowed to choose any sort of community service? Certainly bringing a court case against the government body subjecting him to slavery would be a community service.
I see how some could argue that forcing students to do "community service" is a good thing, and I can also see how some could argue that the 13th amendment to the US constitution was not legally ratified. But if indeed it was legally ratified, I don't see any way to argue that forced "community service" is different from "involuntary servitude".

- Never argue with an idiot. They bring you down to their level and then beat you with experience.

North Bergen Parks Dept. Drive around in some trucks and pick up trash in the parks. Nice coffee/lunch breaks. It's a breeze and you meet funny people who are there as punishment from the courts. I had my IPOD with me the whole time ( well cd player, this was a long time ago)

My son has to complete either 40 or 50 hours of community service before he graduates High School. I can think of nothing other than the library which is not his cup of tea.
I'd appreciate any suggestions. Thanks...
