Jersey City nixes street name change for Donald Trump
by The Jersey Journal Wednesday November 26, 2008, 11:58 AM Trump Plaza is good enough for Atlantic City, but Jersey City's council nixed a proposal to change the street where Donald Trump has developed condos to "Trump Plaza.'' The Jersey City City Council voted last night against a proposal to rename a portion of Washington Boulevard in the waterfront district to Trump Plaza, today's Jersey Journal reports. Check back with Hudson County Now as we try to get the Donald himself to react.

They've managed to do something right - for once. Whose dumb idea was this anyway? Unless "The Donald" was giving money to Jersey City in exchange for the advertising, this has to be one of the dumbest proposals I've ever seen.

Trump Towers was developed by Dean Geibel, but the property will apparently be managed by Trump after completion. (See link below.)
Personally, I'd rather see the city license vanity street name changes or overlays for a fee (for other than for memorial purposes). At least this might bring in some significant revenue to the general treasury, and in these times, we need every revenue dollar we can get. The revenue stream from PILOTS is most definitely going to take a hit as a result of the credit crisis. All the best. Geoff http://www.corusbank.com/Commercial%2 ... 0Geibel-Jersey%20City.pdf

The Second Reading is on the Agenda for the Council Meeting tonight!!!
I'm stuck at work and can't go. Is there anybody to question this ridiculous proposal? What has Trump done to deserve this?? What good does this do for the people of JC? besides confuse delivery people and the mailman. First, LeFrak renamed Pavonia to Town Square !?! - you know - Next - the first stop in Jersey City PATH stop "Town Square"/Newport? Ugh - somebody say something!

It occurs to me, there are yet other franchise operations near the Path tube as well - perhaps we should propose changing the name of Grove St. to "Subway Sandwiches Boulevard"

Trump doesn't even really have anything to do with the Jersey City Trump building. He just licensed his name to Metro Homes.

I'm more inclined to think Trump had made a bad investment in JC and is now looking at anyway to prop it up with the use of his name. It would answer the question why he might not mention this development too often !

Regardless of whether or not Trump gets his street, it's kind of funny to see a group that embodies the most selfish, cynical, and just plain arrogant aspects of this city drop to their knees so willingly to deliver a big sloppy blowjob to a celebrity developer.

Remind me what Trump has done for Jersey City...?

It's kind of like the city changing the name of the Morris Canal to the Lipski Stream...

It could be worse. The Donald could be building a 1,400 acre golf course on some of your country's most beautiful coastline:
Linky And even if you don't read the above, you've got to click on it just to see the photo the Telegraph used of Trump.

Renaming a street for one of the uglier new buildings we have in downtown, merely because it has the (now pasee) name of trump on the marquee? Please, stop embarassing me.

Of course, if the council really has it's heart set on changing the name of the street. Why not name it after the people who are actually buying apartments in the building? "Chump Street"

Whenever Trump brags about his real estate adventures, he NEVER mentions this building in Jersey City.
It's confusing enough finding that portions of Grove and Henderson are renamed too. Morgan is only four blocks long. Shall they rename the rest of it - Butler Bob Street, then Bob Toll Street and finally "backside of Grove Pointe Way"? If he cleaned up the area around their next door neighbor, the Powerhouse - picked up all the trash, towed away all the cars illegally parking on the lot, planted grass, maintained the property behind and surrounding the Powerhouse - MAYBE he could earn the name. The city has done such a dismal job caring for this landmarked building; it's embarrassing.

Put money in the right hands and you could rename JC to Trumpville - just look at Pavonia / Newport

Rename the street? For someone who didn't participate in any substantive way, only through name licensing?
I have to concur with Fast Eddie -- the street name change is consideration. Nothing else makes sense. I just wonder how deep the cynicism lies. Did the JC end of the dealmakers know how stupid it would sound under the circumstances? And while I'm asking rhetorical but pointed questions, can somebody tell me what the big draw is to have Trump's name on a building? What did THAT cost? And, more importantly, WHY?

"What other developer has a street named after them around here?" Cornelius Van Vorst and Michael Pauw come to mind immediately. There are quite a few other examples but it would take quite a while to identify all of them. That said, the developer of the Trump building is named Geibel. Since Trump was only paid a license fee for use of his name on the building, I would think the best way to commemorate the builder's project would be to call the street "Geibel Plaza." Somehow I doubt that would have much of a sales ring to it though.

I can't even find the words..........well, I'll try anyway.
I am strongly opposed to renaming streets for ANY reason. Change is ALWAYS bad. I am still upset about renaming Hudson Blvd. for JFK. Not that I have anything against JFK but what connection did he have with Hudson Co. besides being a Democrat. Anyway, I don't even know who Morgan (Morgan St.) was but I'm sure, whoever he was, he is more worthy of the street name than that clown Trump. The guy has a reality TV show for Christ sake!I remember reading that Trump really had no interest in building in JC but was enticed into this project with the promise of having the buildings named after him with little or no investment on his part. What other developer has a street named after them around here? Is there a LeFrak St. ? Maybe there is, I dunno but at least he was a pioneer on the waterfront. Who in JC government proposed this idea? I want names. Who thought is was a good idea to honor "The Donald" with his own street? "Cahn also said he was unaware that the City Council was considering an ordinance to put the Trump name on a Jersey City street." Khaaaaaaaaaaaaaannnnn! You're full of $hit. This was "unwritten" into the deal from day one. "When the public was allowed to speak, local resident Della Womack questioned the purpose of the ordinance, eliciting laughter and applause. ?What is Trump doing for the city of Jersey City to be able to have a street named after him?? Womack said." No Della, the question is - what can WE do for The Donald? "The existence of Trump Plaza: Jersey City is actually cited in the ordinance as the reason for renaming Morgan Street, saying, ?it is both fitting and appropriate to commemorate the importance of these projects.?" Was this line stolen from The Gettysburg Address?

Good thing the City Council is wasting time on this BS.
I mean, there are no other problems in the city that need attention, right? And we wonder why nothing (productive) ever gets done for city residents.
