My point was that the young man posting under the name of "Tom" did not start the tread -- it was a reaction to GW's post.

Even at the time, I always assumed you were just naively reacting to an urban hoax floating around the schools -- something your husband reported to you -- and I think that is obvious to anyone who reads the tread.

Wow thanks GP for retracting your statement and calling me naive...this just keeps getting better!

Why don't you call the JC school officials who were trying to protect their young women and tell them they were being naive as well? I am sure they would love to hear from you...their parents too.

Also, I was under the impression that a Forum such as JClist is a place to collect and verify information. I was not spreading a rumor...just wondering if there was something going on that I was not previously aware of. On the contrary, I have found that JClist is mainly ok posting news after things have happened in JC instead of preventing it.

Did that also prove to be untrue?

The guy who was arrested said in a later post that he was listening to his scanner & heard nothing about the shootings.

Obviously mens rea will be paramount- if you pull a fire alarm in a theater when there's no fire, but you thought there was a fire, it is not a crime. You could be an over-reacting drama queen, but fortunately (or unfortunately) that is not indictable...

Grove Path, let me speak up for myself here. I do not appreciate your sideways attacks. All I did was ask a question regarding Mischief Night. I was in no way implying that people would be killed or had been killed or that anyone else should give out false information about people being killed. I do not get caught up in such nonsense. I was wondering if this information was accurate, since a highschool girl my husband tutors was let out of her school early. That is a fact. Schools had closed down due to rumors. So, to all of you who think that I had something to do with this ridiculous post or that I somehow am responsible for "Tom's" rumor mill, you are grossly incorrect.
PS- I am gladly banning myself from this site since there are so many people on here who seem like they are out to hurt others. Nice knowing y'all

Yeah, I really think this should be illegal.
And regarding the flyers not making it to the trash...I was just thinking earlier today about the lack of trash cans in Jersey City. In Manhattan they are on every street corner (and sometimes in the middle). The only trash cans that I have found near me is at 5th and Jersey, Hamilton Sq Park, and on Newark and Erie...

Just whatever you do, don't flier my car. Late last week my car was fliered by Havana Alma de Cuba restaurant (as apparently alot of other cars were) and while I was at work it rained. When I got to my car the next day and saw the flier, I tried to take it off but it was stuck to my windshield. I tried to razor it off but there are still white streaks of paper. I saw other people's cars with this too. It really should be illegal. At least it is on the passengers side and not obstructing the driver's side view, but really! This has got to stop. It is my property, not yours and I didn't give you permission to stick something to my car.

No reason to get all nasty -- BTW the Journal itself has now added the term "gang" to its newest headline/ update:

=========================
Two more arrests at Dickinson High, and a gang attack reported

by The Jersey Journal
Tuesday November 18, 2008

There were two more arrests outside Dickinson High School yesterday afternoon, and three students were attacked by a gang not far from the Jersey City school, police said this morning.

The Jersey Journal reported in today's editions that three teens -- two 16-year-olds and a 15-year-old, were arrested yesterday. The police also arrested an 18 -year-old -- Daniel Anthony Green, of Van Wagenen Avenue, and charged him with rioting, aggravated assault and resisting arrest, cops said.

Green got into a fight inside the school and knocked a student unconscious, police said.

A 17-year-old was charged with obstruction when he refused to go through a metal detector at the doors of the school at lunchtime, police said.

Also, a 16-year-old boy told police he and two friends were attacked by a group of 15 former Dickinson High students while walking home after school yesterday. The boy said the attackers were part of a gang called the "Summit Mob," which is frequently seen around Summit Avenue and Poplar Street.

The boy said his hand was cut when he tried to defend himself from a machete swung by one of his assailants, a police report said. When he fled, the group pounced on his two friends and beat them with baseball bats, the cops were told.

OMG...reality check*** No one is being nasty

And as far as the boys in the parking lot (I'm talking to you, Target) selling candies out of a big box, that is just insane. Does Target (or wherever) not have the power to stop this from happening on their property??

If the "cheerleaders" are in fact not cheerleaders (nothing is 100% so I will give them 1% benefit of doubt), I can not help but blame the parents. There are always one or two parents sitting in the gas station lot watching out for the girls with buckets weaving in and out of dangerous traffic. Is this some sick money earning scheme that parents come up with? "You go out and look cute and pretend you are cheerleaders and we will split the profits 90/10"?

Interestingly as I drove through the Holland Tunnel traffic yesterday (Sunday) with my husband, we were stopped at a red light and a "cheerleader" approached our car. My husband rolled down the window and told her (these were teenagers) that we don't believe they are cheerleaders. She asked why and we told her that Saturday's and Sunday's are football game days and they should be cheering. She said it is too cold and laughed. We then told her that if we see them do cheers we would gladly donate a couple dollars. We also mentioned that they are there ALL the time and she played dumb. I just really don't get it. When I was a cheerleader we did fundraising by making cookies, having a carwash, etc...not standing on the side of the road asking for donations.

She never tried to convince us that she really is a cheerleader, and when we asked them what school or organization they cheer for, she couldn't answer-she only said the name of the cheer group named on her sweatshirt.
I don't mean to sound so pessimistic, but I really just want to know the deal.

Democrats turned out & Republicans didn't. That simple.

Encouraging to conservatives because McCain could have won, but he failed to energize his party.

Encouraging to the left because, while the magical mythical "youth vote" apparently didn't materialize, AGAIN, they got the base fired up & in motion. That won the election this time, just like it does every other time. Which means it doesn't have to be a one off, isn't a miracle. Miracles aren't consistent. No talk about "maintaining the high level of 2008" in 2012 in terms of bringing in "new" voters. Just need to keep your players off the bench & in the game.

So Obama was no different than any other candidate in terms of "bringing people into the process" or anything like that- His peeps liked him more than McCain's peeps liked McCain.

Numbers are prelim, as noted in the article, but does seem to suggest that this was a plain ol' ground game in the end.
