Still no details?
Did they come through a window that was open? kick a door in? Unlocked door? Break a window? anything?

how do you know the robbery at wayne and varick happened at 10pm? Neighbor told me.... I wasn't home at the time. And just to be accurate for the 'record-keepers' here, it was technically a burglary.

+1! I have helped the cops put 7 burglars behind bars over the years because I keep my eyes open and say something. So spread any info you have correctly and we will do our best to catch this guy/guys.

I didn't start the thread, but maybe I can get it back on track:
There have been a recent rash of BURGLARIES in our immediate area; 6 in the past 2 weeks.

While you're debating definitions, there was a similar break-in on Wayne just off Varick on Saturday night about 10pm. So, you think it's important to share information, but not important enough to share correct information? There's a different between a robbery and a burglary, and what's the point of disseminating information if it just leaves people asking, "What happened?"

My original question was to determine whether there was someone breaking into homes while the owners were away or someone waving a gun in peoples faces and robbing them on the street. A big distinction in my opinion.
Main Entry: rob?bery Pronunciation: \ˈr?-b(ərē\ Function: noun Inflected Form(s): plural rob?ber?ies Date: 13th century : the act or practice of robbing; specifically : larceny from the person or presence of another by violence or threat Main Entry: bur?glary Pronunciation: \ˈbər-glə-rē also -gə-lə-rē also -gəl-rē\ Function: noun Inflected Form(s): plural bur?glar?ies Date: circa 1523 : the act of breaking and entering a dwelling at night to commit a felony (as theft); broadly : the entering of a building with the intent to commit a crime

Scenerio # 1
Wife: honey do you hear something downstairs? Husband: wait here while I investigate Husband: who's there? Burglar: Its me the burglar. (as he point gun at husband) Husband: Are you sure you are a burglar and not a robber?I went to law school and we were taught there is a clear difference between a burglar and a robber. hold on while I get my law books Robber : how about I put a cap in your ass and you can call me a murderer Wife: Honey in law school I learned that if a burglar put a cap in your ass you are (interruption) Robber: did law school teach you how to dodge bullets? BANG BANG BANG BANG. THE END Scenerio #2 Wife: Honey do you hear something downstairs? Husband: Stay here while I investigate with my shotgun Husband:Who's there? Burglar: Its me the burglar(as he points gun at husband) Husband: Actually you were a robber (As he fires his shotgun and eliminates the threat.) BANG!THE END

I can't get over how everything and anything will be debated on this site and how easy it is to stray from the actual subject matter.
This site should be renamed the "Jersey City ADD List" from hereonend....... Ck

Not only did it have to occur at night but the burgler also HAD to be dressed exactly like in the picture below or it wasn't considered a burglery. The picture is an actual engraving from a 1885 New Jersey law book. It's true.

I was using the definition I recalled from law school, which is what is commonly referred to as the multi state definition. Of course it's been modified. In fact, the offense originally had to be committed at night to be considered a burglary. Naturally each state is going to have their own particular definition of it, though I suspect most closely resemble each other and I would doubt any of them require the "night time" component.

I was describing burglary in terms of the most common situation, not attempting to provide the legal definition for it. But since we're nitpicking:
"Actually", your stated definition is more narrow than the legal definition of "Burglary" under the New Jersey Criminal Law as I read it: (1) There need not be "breaking" under NJSA 2C:18-2(a) as you say; (2) It need not be a "dwelling" as you say, rather a "structure" suffices among other things stated in NJSA 2C:18-2(a); (3) The intent required is not to commit a "felony" (that is, a violation for which the authorized maximum term of imprisonment exceeds one year) per se, it is with the intent to commit an "offense." (NJSA 2C:18-2(a)) "Offenses" are defined under NJSA 2C:1-4 to include more than just felonies. ...not that anybody on this board is overly concerned with these nuances. Stay safe everybody! Actually, a burglary is the breaking and entering of a dwelling with the intent to commit a felony. The felony need not be a theft offense. Quote:

For clarity's sake, pls keep in mind that a "robbery" involves taking property from a person or in the person's immediate presence by use of force or threat of force. It requires a personal encounter and using/threatening physical force against the victim. More scary.
"Burglary" is what you call somebody entering a dwelling and taking stuff unbeknownst to the occupants. No personal encounter needed. Less scary. Obviously, one could be "robbed" in their home, but I'm guessing you mean a burglary. FWIW: I've been the victim of a burglary while living here, but never a robbery. /

I was told that it was a home robbery. My info is secondhand so I'm hoping someone knows more.
Apparently there were police on the scene during the day and one neighbor thought they may have caught the person. Something definitely happened, but I'm just not clear on the details. It seems pretty brazen if indeed it was a daytime break in...
