I'm sorry to hear this. Love him or hate him he was a real character in downtown JC. An icon. I'll miss him.

Vladimir died last night.
http://russia-ic.com/img/people/drem.jpg http://www.russia-ic.com/people/general/d/490 He would help spend hours helping and advising neighbors with their projects. An eccentric and controversial neighborhood character, I liked him. RIP. Robin.

Thanks for all the info!
It is pretty impressive piece of work. It's not a Gargoyle though, is it?

Awesome. I've wondered what that was. It's good to finally know.

Thanks Geoff, for many years I wondered about him. I've heard some things but this is the first time I've seen something tangible. (The /psi.ece.jhu.edu link. )

The artwork is attached to the building owned by Vladimir Dremlyuga, although I wouldn't call him mad. That would make him mad. Vladimir is the one who christened it "Mad Vlad"! It weighs 400 pounds, had to be winched up there. Robin.

Is he a tough cookie? Yes, and you would be too if you spent six years in a Soviet prison. He was an activist in the Soviet dissident movement of the 1960's and one of seven Russian dissidents to be jailed for protesting the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968 right in the middle of Red Square and in front of the entrance to the Kremlin. He was released as a direct result of the intervention of President Richard Nixon at the beginning of the Detente Era in the 1970's and has lived in Jersey City since that time. http://psi.ece.jhu.edu/~kaplan/IRUSS/coord.html If you see him in the empty restaurant space next to Basic's on 8th Street, ask him about the artwork. He's not scary, just very Russian to the core. All the best. G

The subject came up before, a couple years back I think, though I forget if there was any resolution. Always struck me as Balinese or Javanese. Very cool piece, though, all the more so for being something that I bet most people in the area have never noticed.

I suspected it is a metal also... but such a HUGE METAL on the wall??
It looks like dried out root of a huge tree with animal head... Has an aura of Asia-Pacific art. If it's a piece of art, I would like to know who and why made it!

If I think I know what you're talking about, I thought it was made of some kind of metal. It's in a big circle shape, with an intricate design, right? I always thought it was just an objet d'art.

Does anyone know what the heck in the huge wooden thing on wall of building on Erie st? It's right around corner from Basic Cafe.
It is on east side of the street, but the THING is only visible from across the street. It looks cool, but it freaked me out when I saw it first. Sorry no pics!

I noticed that for the first time a couple of years ago; have no idea how long it's actually been there. Quite an unexpected sight! Looked to me like it might be southeast-Asian in origin, maybe Balinese, but I'm not sure. Very cool, in any case.

A huge wooden gargoyle leers from the side exterior wall of the building which contains Basic.
If you stand on Erie near the curb and look up over the roof of Basic you will see it on the wall behind. Does anyone know what it is or how it got there? It is not something for Halloween, it seems to have been there for years. Robin.
