I have some computers I'd like to donate, either to an organization or a local family. One is a 2008 iMac (totally usable for internet, word processing, basic graphic stuff), and the others are older PC laptops that might of of interest to a kid who likes to practice rebuilding computers. Any ideas?

This is all very confusing to me...

Are people trying to donate their computers to some organization that could use an old computer? If so, how are these organizations funding the need for someone to repair or maintain them? Are they properly considering whether it makes economic sense to use computers old enough that someone was willing to throw them away?

And what is this about *paying* someone to take old computers? I could understand paying a charity to offset the TCO, I suppose..

The JC Police Activity League (PAL) runs a great program in the Bergen/Lafayette area. They may need items like this for their homework help program.

I know they've been hit quite hard by the economy - a lot of their main contributors are now out of business or reducing their donations significantly.

Call Sgt. Frank Williams at (201) 434-3366. They are currently seeking items for use by their after school or sports programs (art supplies, sports equipment, etc), volunteers and cash donations.

Haha! Oops, sorry! Clearly a typo. I meant "humane" society. Although a place to donate humans might be nice on occassion!

You can also donate to any YMCA - they'll give you a tax form too....

Good luck! I'd love to hear more about the Liberty Human Society and what type of donations they'll accept. I have a neighbor I'd like to donate, if he meets their criteria...

Hi Everyone-
I am spring cleaning and have a Dell desktop computer that I'd like to donate, monitor and all. I've taken my hard drive out.

Does anyone know where I could donate it in JC? Or somewhere nearby?

I've also got some furniture to donate. I'd love any ideas for local donation.

Thanks!

Leave it out on the sidewalk. It will probably be gone in an hour.

Through the summer JCIA has drop offs for this stuff. Check the website. I take all my electronic waste to have it recycled.

So I'm searching around for a place to discard 2 old computers...
- JCIA says they won?t be able to take them until April '09 (when they have their next event)
- Staples offers a drop of service, but they charge you (I think) $10 per computer

Does anyone know where I can dispose of these in a responsible manner?

I love Goodwill. Up in Maine they are all over the place, even in some of the fancy shopping areas. They ought to be traded on the stock exchange.

Now back to recycling computers.

I happened to find this site on Yahoo tonight:

http://earth911.org/

Just type in your zip code and the type of item you want to recycle and it will tell you the locations to drop it off.

In many European countries manufacturers have to take back their products once they have "died".

I took mine to staples it cost me 10 bucks for each piece. It was a real easy process, I did however remove the hd myself beforehand.

You can always use those old computers on your deck.

Google will show you many places to recyle a computer.

Here is one:
http://www.epa.gov/epaoswer/hazwaste/recycle/ecycling/donate.htm

There is always http://www.freecycle.org/ .

Thanks. I only wish it were sooner and more often. Clearly a ton of toxic electronic equipment is going into landfills.

Call the JCIA: http://www.jciaonline.org/contact.php

If it still works you may want to consider donating it to the Salvation Army or goodwill store.

you can also try the HP recycling program. They will take any brand of computer/monitor.

You might use Free Cycle as it will go quick and someone comes to pick it up:

Call your church of choice and they will most likely put you in touch with a family / kid in need of a computer, or just drop it off at the church after you call.

Tekserve holds free computer/electronics recycling days a few times a year in Union Square, although that may be hard to get to with a desktop and monitor.
I think Best Buy may have an electronics recycling program, or possibly even Whole Foods...?
