Before Newport was Newport, it was just Pavonia. In 20 years, I don't think I ever saw anyone on the platform until Newport was built, and the Path station was renovated into Pavonia/Newport. Before Newport, the platform was a plot of oozing, yellow slime. Right out of a movie....I am sure some chemical or something really aweful from the land above - factories, Railroad yards & land that was vacated years earlier - when the station was Erie Street (notice the E on the pillars). It was a wasteland of vacant rubble when I was growing up. Anyhow, during the renovation, they sprayed and sprayed and sprayed and then sprayed some more of that stucco stuff that you will now notice on the ceilings/walls at the station (looks like white (now turning black) cement or stucco. Every once in a while, they have to respray because the slime breaks through again...

The same type of leakage problem occurs at the Newport Path station too. It has improved a bit over the years but the problem still exists. Did they ever figure out what that odd yellow slime that was oozing on the columns? It was like an urban ectoplasm.

Definitely crazy during rush hour, especially when a few of the escalators are out of service. But still, it moves along, and I prefer it to some of the other hubs like Grand Central - 4/5/6/7 madness.
I did notice that the nasty mildew smell near the doors to the subways has gone away in the past few month. Probably not quite as ripe in the colder weather.

That whole place is a mess. Whoever thought it was a wise idea to route ALL commuters to a single intersection that crosses Church street should have their ass handed to them.

It's not like they're going to go nuts fixing it when the whole thing is going to be redone anyway. Just avoid it for now, no big deal. They threw that place together in no time flat.

I don't know, but when I have to trudge through leaking roofs every morning and dodge drips to get toward the stairs/escalators, I think they should be LOWERING fares, not considering raising them.
