They should have never torn down Lafayette PJs. Sure, it wasnt a good area but at least it wasnt concentrated in one place. All the element from there moved to Booker T. and there was always a lot of bad blood between them

oh and jersey city nj, i believe they admitted the cop fired back. that being said, i don't ever fully believe any accounts. unless i'm there, or sitting on a jury hearing ALL the evidence, you're just guessing and blindly following the bs both sides spew. THAT being said, i have half a brain to stay away.

The Booker T Washington Housing Complex criminals are out of control. You can see how in the reports Campbell killed Lewis and shot at police while escaping the scene and how the other criminals make false statements of police shooting into the crowd to take the focus off what is really going on.

This place needs to have 24/7 surveilence and arrests have to be made.

Why are these criminals and their families allowed to live there while the city payes their rent with our tax dollars. Why are criminals not evicted?

Who is in charge of housing and why do they not investigate these people and beging the eviction process?

Shooter is arrested on murder charges, may face extradition

A Jersey City man charged with gunning down a 28-year-old man at a public housing complex in May has been charged with attempted murder in North Carolina, Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said.

Samard Campbell, 24, of Bramhall Avenue, was wanted in the May 21 slaying of Toby Lewis, 28, at the Booker T. Washington housing complex, DeFazio said. A warrant for Campbell's arrest was issued shortly after witnesses identified him as the shooter.

Campbell was arrested Wednesday in High Point, N.C., by members of the U.S. Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force, Hudson County Prosecutor's Office Homicide Squad and local law enforcement.

Despite the arrest, Campbell is not likely to face prosecution in Hudson County any time soon. That's because Campbell is now also charged in a shooting less than two weeks ago in Laurinberg, N.C., DeFazio said.

Campbell, who is currently being held in North Carolina, will have to face the local attempted murder charges before being extradited to New Jersey, DeFazio said.

The bullet that killed a man in the Booker T. Washington public housing complex overnight Sunday entered his body beside a "THUG LIFE" tattoo on his stomach, investigators said yesterday.

Investigators found three bags of suspected marijuana on the body of 28-year-old Toby Lewis, aka "Smoke," who was gunned down late Sunday, Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said yesterday.

Lewis died at the Jersey City Medical Center shortly after midnight, DeFazio said.

Samard Hassan Campbell, 24, aka "Marty," of Jersey City, was identified as the gunman by witnesses, and investigators are still trying to track him down, DeFazio said.

"He clearly knows he is a wanted man," DeFazio said. "He is in flight and it's possible he fled the jurisdiction. Clearly he is not in any of the known addresses we have for him."

A .40 caliber pistol was found at the scene of the shooting near a basketball court in the complex courtyard, and investigators have determined it was reported stolen in South Carolina, DeFazio said.

DeFazio said the motive of the fatal shooting appears to have been a fight between the two men earlier Sunday. Both Lewis and Campbell had been convicted of crimes and spent time in state prison, according to state corrections records.

DeFazio said fragments of the bullet that killed Lewis pierced several organs, as well as his aorta, according to the autopsy performed Monday at the state Regional Medical Examiner's Office in Newark.

Official: Report of officer firing into crowd untrue
It is absolutely untrue that a Jersey City police officer fired into a crowd while responding to a fatal shooting at the Booker T. Washington public housing complex last night, city spokesman Stan Eason told The Jersey Journal today in response to earlier press reports.

When police arrived at the scene of the fatal shooting, they saw a man and a boy running away, Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said. One officer gave chase and at some point the man turned and pointed a gun at the officer, who fired one shot at him, DeFazio said. The bullet hit no one.

DeFazio wouldn't comment on claims the officer fired into a crowd, saying he had not yet seen all the reports. He did, however, say a preliminary investigation has found that the officer acted reasonably in firing his gun.

An officer is allowed to use deadly force to protect himself or a civilian when deadly force is being used against them, DeFazio said. The officer must have a clear shot that does not put the innocent in danger, he added.

Officials yesterday defended the actions of a Jersey City police officer who fired his gun during a foot chase at a local public housing complex, saying it was done in the act of self-defense.

When police arrived at Booker T. Washington housing complex shortly before midnight Sunday, they saw a man and a boy running from the courtyard where several gunshots were heard. One of those shots hit Toby Lewis, a Jersey City native who was later pronounced dead.

One police officer chased after the pair. The man turned and pointed a gun at the officer, who responded by firing his gun, hitting no one, Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said.

Detectives are not sure if the alleged gunman, who got away, is the same man now charged with the murder, DeFazio said.

The preliminary investigation by the Prosecutor's Office has determined the officer "acted reasonably" when he fired his gun.

DeFazio said an officer is allowed to use deadly force to protect himself or a civilian when deadly force is being used against them. The officer must have a clear shot, which does not put the innocent in danger, he added.

Initial press reports suggested that the officer fired into a crowd, but Jersey City spokesman Stan Eason said that is "absolutely untrue" based on the investigation.

A 28-year-old man who'd recently moved from the Booker T. Washington public housing complex was shot and killed in the courtyard there late Sunday night, and the police are still looking for the man who they say pulled the trigger, officials said yesterday.

A Jersey City police officer who responded to the shooting scene shortly before midnight Sunday fired a single round at a man who appeared to have a gun, officials said. The bullet missed its target, and investigators said yesterday the officer's actions were "justified," given the circumstances.

Toby Lewis was shot near the basketball court in the housing complex courtyard off Fremont Street, Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said. Lewis was pronounced dead 12:30 a.m. at the Jersey City Medical Center, DeFazio said.

Lewis had recently moved from the Booker T. Washington housing complex to Irvington, police said.

An arrest warrant was issued yesterday for Samard Hassan Campbell, 24, aka "Marty," of Jersey City, after eyewitnesses identified him as the shooter, DeFazio said. It is possible both men were armed, he added.

The murder is another example of the violence plaguing the housing complex and nearby Montgomery Gardens housing complex. The rivalry between some youths in the two housing facilities has triggered numerous violent, often deadly crimes.

The murder of Lewis does not appear to be related to the rivalry, but may have been personal or due to friction over drug turf, DeFazio said.

On a cement wall not far from where Lewis was shot dead, someone spray-painted the words "BULLET TOWN ALL DAY" - a moniker that has stuck among residents of the housing complex.

Police found a .40 caliber pistol at the scene, but it's not clear to whom it belonged, DeFazio said. Investigators found four spent .40 caliber casings, as well as one live 9mm round and three live .40 caliber rounds, DeFazio said.

DeFazio said a crowd gathered around the responding police officers and told them it was the police who killed Lewis. "That was a rank fabrication," DeFazio said.

One Dead After Shooting in Jersey City

JERSEY CITY, N.J. -- One man is dead and there are a lot of questions after a shooting in Jersey City during the night.

Police said around midnight there was a report of a shootout with police at 93 Freemont Street near a community basketball court.

One witness told 1010 WINS reporter Steve Sandberg that "somebody got shot, him and another guy had a little dispute."

Sandberg reported, "as onlookers scattered, witnesses say police opened fire on the crowd. Though many say no one else was wounded, those reports are conflicting."

The initial shooting victim was transported to Jersey City Medical Center where he later died.

Police are still investigating.

(Jersey City- WABC, May 21, 2007) - One person was killed in gunfire that may have involved police outside a Jersey City, N.J., apartment complex.
Police say the victim was hit when shots were fired outside 93 Freemont Avenue just after midnight.

The victim, a man, was rushed to Jersey City Medical Center and pronounced dead.

Eyewitness News is told the shooting prompted a rush of young adults running through the grounds surrounding the apartment complex.

A large number of Jersey City police officers mobilized in response to the shooting, which occurred near a basketball court.

Officials say it was not clear if police shot the person who was hit or fired shots at the crowd.

No police officers were injured in the gunfire.

(CBS) JERSEY CITY, N.J. There was a wild police-involved shootout in Jersey City overnight. One person is dead, and police are still trying to piece together what happened.

Investigators are still trying to get to the bottom of what happened in Jersey City.

According to police officers, they responded to reports of a shooting on the basketball court off Fremont Avenue, where they found one man shot and a second person with a gun.

Police say when the arrived, the man with the gun started firing shots at the officer, and the officer fired back but did not hit him and he got away.

According to police they did not hit anyone when they opened fire.

The man who was shot was later pronounced dead.

The search was on Monday morning for the gunman.
