I finally made it to The Embankment ....I loved it!
The food was very good, the employees super nice and they make a perfect Dirty Vodka Martini ![]() The Embankment is my favorite new restaurants. ( Ox and Skinners too!)

Just want to register a big thumbs up for this place.
Not only is a decent restaurant sorely needed north of Newark Avenue (no, I don't consider the Hamilton Park stAle House to be a foodie favorite), but The Embankment offers a lot of quality fare for the price. I have to admit that I didn't try the most expensive entree (a $28 dry aged steak), but the appetizers, burgers and pasta dishes were all reasonably priced and tres delish. The decor may be a bit Spartan, but who's complaining when the $6 draft beer is served in a tennis ball can-sized glass iced mug (and half-priced at happy hour)? Mind you, I sense this isn't a particularly place for bar flies and bucket beer nights (at ease, Ale House fans). But if you're up for a reasonably priced and very high quality meal this side of Hoboken, I whole-heartedly recommend The Embankment. (Props are due, too, for the apropos name me thinks.) Sure beats "Ox" in my book...

I was at the Embankment with a date on Saturday night and you can't take away the fact that the place is absolutely beautiful and a much added accent to our area but I have to say that we were both extremely disappointed with our meals. I had the Salmon which was way to bland and my date had the Lamb chop which was also. Mind you, he requested steaksauce and they didn't have it at hand. Meal serving are small and yes I have to agree pricey. I'd say re-do the menu and have the chef add a lil kick and spices...
I'd opt for the bar only unless the menu changes.

went in for happy hour last week, didn't try the food menu but the drink selection was great. Talked to some of the folks working there and it sounds like they're addressing concerns as they hear them. I will definitely be back. Oh and Patrick serves you ask him to do his flaming orange peal trick.

I live in Schroeder also - I know of one guy named Jonathan - but his wife and he moved in months ago like me - it can't be that Jonathan. I ate there for the first time a few weeks ago. I enjoyed the dinner, although the portions were a tad too small for me. The one small hard dinner roll delivered before the salad was a bit silly I thought - I had to ask for more and felt a bit guilty. This is a great place - I'm certain they are 'fine-tuning' the place now and it will be great! I see that they installed new lights by the windows - looks better. I cannot wait to try the new brunch - I bet it will be great - and I want to stop by for lunch one day when I'm off from work. And this whole thing about New York vs. New Jersey is SO SO silly. We ( JC residents) are making JC great - and only a mile or so to NYC over the river. What is with all of this comparing - so pretentious. I'm a NATIVE NYC boy - living in JC - it's all the same really! This constant comparision between the two is so so silly and sounds so immature.

Finally made it to The Embankment. I thought the food was overpriced for what you get. My wife and I had the Duck last Friday, which was okay, but not worth $27. The Tamarind Duck in Sawadee for $16 was twice as good at almost half the price. Okay, it's not apples to apples, but side by side, at the same price I know which one most would pick.
My daughter had the flounder daily special, nothing was special about it. Not saying it was bad, it was okay, but would not consider "good" or "great". The burger my son had was excellent. That was the only good thing on the table. Having said all that, the service was excellent and attentive, bread was fresh and delicious, the ambiance was pleasant. I would go back for burgers and beer, or on an expense account. Prices here are comparable to Cafe Matisse in Rutherford(www.cafematisse.com), and the food is 3 levels better.

I have lived and worked in Jersey City for almost 10 years now. I have seen many businesses come and go and a few stay and grow. I think it must be pointed out that the people who invest what in many cases is the life savings on a dream must be applauded and supported. It is very easy to point out all the flaws in a business and most startups have many, but the level of criticism that is spread on this site by typically the same people is not constructive for the most part but really nasty. It hurts our community by steering people away from local businesses. If you don\'t like a dish or the service or the style of a business, do the right thing and tell the owner directly. Yes, I do personally know the owner of this Embankment and their family, as well as many other small business owners in Jersey City. They deserve more consideration than this site affords. Many of the people who open restaurants, clothing stores, etc know that they could make more money with less risk in NYC but they do so here because they want to see this city grow and improve. As I write this, I realize that the same attacks will be directed at me from the same old people. But I ask those of you who are reading this to support your local businesses by getting to know the owners,
finding things you like and if you cannot, simply don't go patronize them

OK, well to try to bring this back on topic...
One thing that I havent seen mentioned here and didnt know about until I happened by there early one evening is that they have a happy hour every day from 4-7pm. During that time the booze is reduced price (dont remember all the details except that the draft beer is half price so my pleasant Radeburger pint cost only $3). Not only that but the bar menu is half price at this time so you can get the outrageous $14 burger with fries for a more reasonable price as well as a number of other choices at half price. Having said that the burger is the worst thing I have tried there Not much taste to it and served too rare for 'medium'. I've seen other people's faces fall when they see the size of their appetizer I feel like somebody might be sitting in a back room full of TV screens somewhere watching people's reactions as their food arrives and laughing their heads off. Strange crowd in the sense that the other patrons dont have the appearance of being local (I havent seen them around in the nabe). Avoid the lady at the bar with the extremely annoying laugh (it's not that funny, love). Unless they get real about their regular menu prices, I'll give them 6 months before they have to close up shop.

We went there last week for dinner.
I agree with some of the posts... the restaurant does have potential and I would not be so quick to judge, to be fair... after all, it is new and is trying to work out all the kinks. The dining experience overall was NOT amazing... besides my food being unevenly salty (bad salt sprinkling job I hope), it did not stand out. I gathered that the restaurant is still tinkering with its menu given all these different specials that it is offering... a suggestion is NOT to put the lamb shank on the regular menu. However, the staff was courteous, accomodating, and inquisitive - asking as what we like, don't like - so they can make amends. To me, it is a big plus in terms of melding into the Hamilton Park dining scene, with its own niche. Still, I would give the restaurant 1-2 more months to adjust. It does need to step up before Hamilton Square gets its new restaurant tenants. Best of Luck!

Went with my husband and we loved it. The food was absolutely delicious... we are very excited about this addition to the neighborhood. Yeah - it's definitely an upscale restaurant... but that's what we wanted... and it's nice to have a few options in JC. This is definitely our new favorite.
Didn't feel cold at all - as mentioned in previous posts... maybe they adjusted the temp. We also liked the bar atmosphere... they have a great beer list. High ceilings and very comfortable. Can see it being a great place to cool off this summer.

I will definitely go back again. I am hopeful and really want to support this new place. Yes, the burger wasn't that great, and 3 of us ordered it and none of us felt one way or the other about it, unfortunately. I will try it again though, we could have hit an off night. But I will try surf n' turf. Thanks for the tip!

creativeconquests,
Sorry to hear you were not impressed with the food. You should have probably gone for a fancier dish than a burger... We actually went for dinner to The Embankment last week and had a much better experience. My husband had the risotto which was very tasty (although a tiny undercooked). I ordered one of the daily specials, the Surf and Turf with monk fish and pork chunks and some exotic mushrooms and veggies. It was delicious, the pork almost melted in my mouth, and the size of the portion was perfect. We also ordered the soup of the day (a cream of mushroom) which was really good. The waiters were serving the soup to every table in a cappucino cup as a treat from the Chef... nice touch. The staff very very attentive that night. Service was a bit slow for the main course, but overall we enjoyed the food, the ambiance and the service. And the staff speaks Spanish, magn?fico! We'll certainly go back again. ![]()

I'm bummed people.
I went last night and the food was just okay. Darn it all! I SO WANTED THIS TO BE MY NEW PLACE. I had the Kobe beef burger and it just tasted like a burger with a very high price point. The fries were presented in a coffee cup and were soggy. I always find these gourmet burgers often will present fries in a manner where they are delicious in some way, but no. The shrimp tempura appie was soggy and the miso chicken wings has flavors that didn't feel like they merged and the portions were small (4 of each) compared to the price point. We really wanted the service to be consistent and good but our drinks were empty and we had to go and ask for a second round and a third and ask for our waters several times. It wasn't busy but it was hard to get consistent service and no one cleared our dirty plates at all. I will continue to support this place and try it out and hope they are tweaking things to improve. But I have to be honest here, for their price point they have to deliver a good, high end product that is consistent for me to continue to come. Marco and Pepe have learned one thing - incredible food and consistently incredible will bring in people and we'll tolerate the rest. (Not saying there is anything to tolerate, but I'll wait in line for their food). If the Embankment makes their food it's main draw, the rest will come. I hope they figure it out - I really want to go there. I'm afraid the next time I do it will have to be on the company tab because I don't want to be disappointed at those prices on my tab. Good luck Embankment.

Nice to have another restaurant option to take clients. I liked the vibe and lighting. Food choices were good. Really enjoyed the beet and goat cheese salad and the scallop entree. Dessert was good and they willingly came with a little bowl of ice cream all fancied up with mint and raspberries.
It was hard to go in to the restaurant area after being in the bar. Will definitely go there often. Nice to offset the cost by taking clients and it being on a company tab. Was chilly in there, don't disagree the air circulation needs to be tweaked. I will definitely go again.

Did you go on Thursday/Friday when they first opened or after? I went on Saturday and it was pretty warm. The restaurant has Radiant Floor heating which takes hours and hours to heat a regular room. (I have radiant throughout my house) Maybe even days...given the size of that dining room. They may not be used to the controls yet. It's not like forced air heat that warms up quickly.

Yesterday morning I called to ask if they were open for lunch and the lady who answered the phone said yes, of course. So I walked over to see an empty restaurant, and these 2 guys inside looking at me like i'm crazy for trying to book a table.
I dialed the number for the Embankment, not Merchant. Maybe the person answering was confused? Anyway, anyone know if they'll be opening for lunch soon?

Am not so impressed. I find the place to be cold, stark and uncomfortable. While the music was sort of Zen, the place feels tense and the lack of heat made for a very uncomfortable dining experience. I will say the staff was polite - but lacking a genuine friendly approach. I assume being a new establishment, they were trying hard, or perhaps just the requirement of the owner? The waiter looked a nervous wreck as he served my friend and I one (1) piece of bread using two spoons? Come on, lighten up - this is Jersey City. I ate light, having just clams, which were so so. I am sure the food is great, but in reading the menu, I found it to be boring. On the other hand, I went to Marco & Pepe - for the first time and love it. Perhaps is the warm rustic feel. But I will give the Embankment another try, as I love to support Jersey City businesses. Regards.

Personally I am happy to have a lovely new restaurant within steps of my apartment....other than the $5 bud bottle i think the prices are what I would have expected and certainly not unreasonable. I think eventually they will figure out their crowd and maybe incorporate some kind of happy hour thing. Litm's drinks are pricey, but they have a kick ass happy hour. Where is it cheap to drink anymore around here anyway...even Lucky 7's upped there prices. If you can afford to live in this neighborhood you can afford a $6 beer.

Oh, you're just being priced out Christine! Kidding aside, I think even Frank Bruni would agree that the quality does not match the prices at this place. I'll certainly be going back for the bar, but the menu needs adjusting. Kobe burger? That's more about pretense than taste.
That said, the owners are great people and I'm sure they'll respond to their customers.

What's to say I'm not? Sorry, but if I wanted to pay $5 for a bottle beer, I'd go to a place with a better vibe. Jersey City is great, but it's just not quite there to justify some of the pricing being seen in the new bars and restaurants. Just because it's expensive doesn't mean it's good. Sadly, for all the yuppies out there, that's just the mentality they have. With all these high end places coming in, I feel that we've lose sight of why many of us came to JC in the first place... IT's NOT HOBOKEN OR NYC! It has it's own special something. (Go ahead, complain about me next... I know it's coming... I don't belong here, I'm just a debbie downer, I don't see any value in the neighborhood... blah blah blah).
