We used Stephen Nuding, out of Hoboken. He is a carpenter but also affiliated with Marvin Windows. 201-653-8672.

Need some contactor recommendations for replacing windows in JC's Historic area.
Prefer someone local familiar with historic applications/permits and can have a selection of windows - high to low end to choose from. RWC was recommended as one option. Does anyone have anymore ?

I very highly recommend BWD in Bayonne for non-wood windows. They are the absolute best for quality and service. Their number is 800 639 8439.
Also, have had excellent experience with Raymond glass for custom work. Good luck!

LoKo498: One question: Are you in one of the historic districts? If you are, then the choice of replacement window, unfortunately, won't be up to you. You'll have to go through a cumbersome approval process in which the Historical Nazi will choose the most expensive windows on the market. You can try to replace without approval, but there's a chance a neighbor will rat you out because they went by the book and paid thousands to replace their windows. Not to be Debbie Downer, but I'm telling you this to save you tons of grief and money down the road. The owner of a row house nearby decided to replace all 10 front windows without approval a few years ago. He had just bought the place and was unaware of the historic district zoning and all the rules that entails. Next thing he knew, he was hit with a summons and forced to rip out all the newly installed windows and replace them with historically correct windows.

A very easy, quick and economical solution is to buy storm windows at Home Depot. We have the same windows as you do. The storm windows along with the new screen is doing wonders to insulate from the cold and looks nice. These storm windows are installed from the outside & your landlord can do this without having to access your unit.

My apartment & landlord downstairs apartment are in need of some new windows. Can you guys recomend anyone to install windows or maybe a good place for me to purchase them from wholesale? I was looking at the u s window factory website but dont see any prices but they do offer a free, no-obligation estimate. There are 10 that definately need to be replaced, they might even want all 16 windows changed.

I'm looking for recommendations for a contractor who can replace the three front windows in my condo unit. As the building is a brownstone in the VVP Historic District, I need someone who's familiar with the Historic Preservation requirements and can navigate the paperwork involved. And yes, I know it's going to be expensive.

In the Historic section of town, you must apply for a ?Certificate of no effect? from the JC Historic Comm.; they have the authority to make you repair your windows, if reparable, before they allow you to replace them.

I want to put in some new windows but these are not straight replacement windows I am looking for - I want to replace a couple of 4ft by2ft windows with something that is more floor to ceiling and takes out a good chunk of wall.
Can anyone give me an idea of the process involved in this? It seems that most window companies only do replacements for existing windows and don't really get involved in more construction orientated jobs. 1. Is this the kind of thing that I need to hire an architect for? 2. Any recommendations on a company to do the final job. Thanks

This site will help people get quotes from the 'right' people for the specific job required.
http://www.renovationexperts.com/googleindex.asp?n=verizon_click When I was looking for work, I had my fat-ass name on that site and was as busy as a rooster in a hen house - once my name was 'known' I removed by name from the site. You shouldn't find any 'cowboys' recommended from this site and you will get a fast response from interested contractors, so no-one is wasting no-ones time.

Actually, I used RWC several times and they were pretty helpful. From time to time it can be difficult to get someone on the phone, but all in all they showed up when they said they would, did a neat and professional job, and in one case where they cracked a couple tiles installing a bathroom window, they were quick to make the necessary repairs. I'll use them again.

For replacement glass panes, I highly recommend Raymond Glass. I called them to replace a big piece in an old brownstone door and they did it within 24 hours and with good handiwork. Price was reasonable too, I thought, for being a thick door-sized pane.
They might do whole windows/frames as well. I would use them for anything after my experience. Don't use RWC. They were horrible to me. Mean, unpleasant, combative, etc.
