bike thieves... for them, the hottest fires of hell... or the coldest, frozenest lakes.

but those who invade the home are truly disgusting maggots. hell needs hotter fires for them!

Whoops. Right you are Tex.
So why the hell was it posted yesterday?
For complete documentation purposes, I guess.

I think that is the ultimate answer - I've been putting off getting a second bike.

Binky: Check the date (year) the person said their bike was stolen...no matter what, that bike is gone.

Just to cover all the bases...

Check with the police dept. It is illegal to lock up on a street sign, and I think they were threatening to enforce that a couple of months ago.
Right in front of that building...
Maybe someone noticed.
Can't hurt to check.

I have used this lock for about 6 years now. I have locked up bikes in very sketchy areas around NYC with no issues. I heard about vans that drive around with 5 foot bolt cutters, when they stop at a bike rack you can kiss anything goodbye that is not a top of the line reinforced metal lock. I have no idea if the vans are real and if so I don?t know if it happens outside of Manhattan. When I researched this lock Kryptonite guaranteed it against anything except power tools. At the time I think it was the only lock guaranteed to work in NYC. It should tell you something about the caliber of bike thieves here if Kryptonite had to exclude NYC from all but one of their lock guarantees. If there are vans with bolt cutters driving around a U-lock or weak chain lock isnt going to work, save that for the Omaha suburbs.

I also only lock up my "beater" bike at night or overnight. Leaving a nice bike like a full suspension MTB or carbon road bike isnt advisable no matter how good your lock is. The parts are probably worth the effort for thieves on these bikes. On my "beater" bike I paid $5 to have a bike chain (same as used for the cranks) wrapped in an inner tube locking my seat to the frame. I dont have to take it off or lock it anymore which is nice. I just did this recently but so far it has worked.

What type and brand of lock was used ? Was the lock still intact around the street sign or cut when you arrived at the discovery of the missing bike ? And most of all how did you lock up the bike ??

How cool would it be if local businesses started installing these? I would ride my bike everywhere if I knew it wouldn't get stolen. As it is, I won't take it out if I can't bring it inside with me - I've had three stolen over twenty years (all three times locked) and I won't "contribute" another one.

I have to go off line. Was trying to not alert the thief if this bike is the one stolen. I'm going out to be near the bike. It is at the Newport/Pavonia Library at apx 324 8th St. Hope this is not a false alarm.

Very violent chronic shoplifter at A&P supermarket rode up on a silver/gray specialized bike with letters rubbing off. Had a black seat with 2 yellow/mustard gel packs in the seat. He left it there when he got taken away by the police.

My condo building had every bike on our bike rack stolen. The bike rack is in the basement/parking garage area. We're not sure how they got in, but they probably stole over 20 bikes. The building is near Exchange Place in Paulus Hook.

That sounds like an inside job. It would be very hard to haul away 20 bikes in one fell swoop. You would need a very large truck, or a large flat platform hauled by a truck, to load up 20 bikes. That, or 20 able bodies to ride them away. I say this was an inside job and/or your building was cased by the criminals for quite some time. I don't think a single individual could have pulled this off, either. What did the police say??

Someone told me there is a guy in a van that stops and buys them near St Lucy's shelter for 10-20 bucks with no questions asked. I'm kind of trying to confirm it. I've lost two in the last year and I'm pretty sure at least one was to a specific person that hangs in this area.

Journal Square.
Twice.

One time locked up with several locks--at the bike park rails at Jnl. Sq. PATH station.

One time locked up in front of a store near Jnl Sq area.

When I reported to police they said...'This is not our district, our jurisdiction ends right there....(POINTING TO JERSEY JOURNAL BUILDING) ...If you want to file a report you have to go down here' --And they gave me address of precinct way far away down Bergen Avenue.

They did--to their credit-- take MY name and cell and did a ride-around to see if they could spot MY bike in near area.

Never got a call.

(One other time when I came back from NYC...only my bicycle seat was stolen. So, I had to walk home WITH the bike--sans the seat at 3:30am.)
