pretty funny mistake in the article T-bird pasted:
"Since the budget was introduced in January, 278 city employees have been laid and the city has picked up grant that...." great to know our city government is having so much sex!

A prediction:
The City Council is asking for an almost 25% tax hike for homeowners. The Council on HIGH will say.... "Hey, good slaves, uh..we mean...people of Jersey City.... we LOVE you...we'll cut our fat, sloppy request of 25%...down to.....um, um, let's say....18%! The people will CHEER! And once again they will LOVE back the corrupt City Council for they only ripped them off 18% and not 25%! (This is exactly what happened in NYC.) Let's see if my prediction is correct!

From Jersey City Independent (www.jcindy.com)
Dramatic Budget Season Nears Its Close By Shane Smith ? Apr 20th, 2010 In the months since the draft municipal budget was introduced in January, voices have been raised in protest at city council meetings, city services have been cut, workers have been laid off and pay raises for police and fire were nixed. But despite all these events, taxpayers can expect a tax increase this year. City officials held meetings with business administrator Brian O?Reilly and his staff over the course of the past weeks and months to dissect the budget and trim expenses wherever possible; these efforts reduced the proposed tax levy by over $10 million, from about $196 million to $185 million. For individual taxpayers, this means that the $800 increase in taxes per $100,000 of assessed value that was proposed in January has dropped to $593. O?Reilly tells JCI that three ?big-picture? items contributed to the reduction of the tax levy burden this year: deep cuts to services; increased revenues from payments in lieu of taxes (PILOTs) (commonly known as abatements); and a court victory in a ?very challenging? insurance case against the city... Jersey City City Council will host hearing then vote on 2010 spending budget
The Jersey Journal April 19, 2010, 11:43AM The Jersey City City Council will vote on the 2010 spending budget Wednesday night, according to The Jersey Journal. The nearly $510 million budget carries a $185 million tax levy, down from the original $196 million. City taxes for average homeowners are down as well. For the owner of a $100,000 home will pay about $590 in taxes - expected to be around $800 before the budget was amended. Since the budget was introduced in January, 278 city employees have been laid and the city has picked up grant that will help offset the police budget and realized some additional revenue on tax-abated properties where units were sold, officials said. The budget hearing will be Wednesday at 6 p.m. and the council meeting at 7 p.m.

Cool.
I've been forwarding YOUR flyers and posts to many, many people to help mobilize. I just want to make sure, that as this hopefully grows, that this is a movement sincere and inclusive of people AND issues. There are MANY issues coming ahead to battle. We NEED inclusive actions linking our abused and stolen tax money here in Jersey City to our abused and stolen tax money that goes to endless wars. as it's ALL connected. Anything else will fail. And one more point...if as you say, you ARE being inclusive, perhaps you should also have flyers printed in Spanish? Flyers for Asian communities? Just a thought. Since you've reached out to communites it would be easy for you to do!

This is great--but it should be linked to OTHER connected issues.
Racism, the spending on wars, homelessness----and also to other JC corruptions (the recent arrests connected to the 'illegal-body-part-ring" for example.) And, YOU must outreach to ALL communities...not JUST the 'hipster" Grove community. Is anyone reaching out to Greenville?

If they're going to approve the budget regardless of major opposition, then at least let them do it in shame, in front of tax payers faces! But let us not put the cart before the horse and assume we're all f*cked. Have faith that this opposition has worked to do some good and support the people's movement. We can feel good about being part of that. So please re-arrange your schedules and do your best to attend this critical meeting and support those individuals that are trying so hard to make a difference that will benefit all of us.

While you feel it won't make a difference and you are most likely right they will approve the budget, it is the PEOPLE that will make a DIFFERENCE!!!!
Come on down and march on City Hall April 21st. The power can be with the people, we just need to make it happen. Come meet the recall committees. Ward by Ward we are setting up recall committees. There are two wards that have recall committees already set. We are looking for people who want to mobilize across JC who want their Councilperson recalled... If you want to be part of a movement towards making Change We Can See...Be at City Hall Wednesday April 21st. Quote:

Charon,
As a former Hoboken property owner I can tell you that the people of that city are/were eagerly awaiting the re-eval. (I'm not one of them). They were under the impression that this would lower their taxes. Here in JC, I suspect the net effect of a re-eval (other than destroying the Hamilton Pk neighborhood, which is already only a few nails from the full coffin) and shift population up near Jrnl Sq. What amazes me are some of the properties in Bergen Lafayette that are listed at nearly $300 sq ft with ridiculously high taxes b/c they are new construction. i'm curious if a re-eval would lower taxes there. Lastly and most importantly, what you believe creates your reality. if you believe something is going to f*ck you, it will f*ck you. If you don't let it seize your personal power, you will find your rallying cry and focus your power where it is needed. Throwing up your hands and and bending over to be f*cked is not going to help your situation.

I bet the posting of council members' addresses would help the cause. While I can't effect anarchy. It is needed.

PROTEST CITY HALL April 21st
There will be a special meeting by the City Council on Wednesday, April 21st to vote on the revised budget, nine months in to the fiscal year. We need to make it clear to the Council that we are not happy with the tax increase of up to 25% while rubbing it in our faces by continuing to drive City cars on our dime. We will demand that work begin immediately on the 2010-11 FY to produce a balanced budget that is within our means and on time. There will be a Rally at 5pm for those who can make it. Members of the recall committees will be there to meet with residents. Sign up to speak, Bring your signs, Bring your pots and pans, Bring your tar and feathers! Turn up the heat www.jcpac.org Wednesday April 21st, 2010 CITY HALL 280 Grove Street 5pm - RALLY 6pm - Council Meeting
