I think the new recruits should have at least 2 years of college. There are enough college graduates out there and these cops will be earning over $100,000 soon enough.

I'm hoping they don't recruit ex-military as they have be trained to be offensive and aggressive in their training, especially ex-marines and ex-army ... not so much with ex-navy or ex-air force, if they haven't been exposed to 'specialist' training.
If they do, I hope they vet them correctly to insure they understand the difference between a military service and a civil service. I'm no fan of ex-military as frontline general police officers (there are however exceptions to my viewpoint) ... if you look at most of the negative interactions throughout the nation between police and the community, it has often been through ex-military personnel - Often the problem is when one (ex-military) has been required to follow orders without question to giving orders, and expecting the same 'blind' obedience from the general public.

In a perfect world someones ethnic background would not have any impact on whether or not they are considered for a position, but I know that is a fantasy in the real world.

Instead, when you say that the priorities are "more qualified applicants" and "more minorities" then something has to give. And when you see affirmative action applied pretty much everywhere, it has meant giving on qualifications for AA applicants. Just how it is.

There's a new approach for training Jersey City police recruitsBy The city's police department is expected to reach more than 900 police officers by late 2017 after a class of 30 recruits began its training late last month. When the class graduates from the academy late next year, the Jersey City Police Department is expected to have roughly 920 officers on the force. The department has not seen a force that size in two decades, officials said.
