Re: Suburban man angry that new law will move "Pervs to the 'Burbs"

Excellent point about idiots versus truly dangerous child molester. What the writer misses, however, in discussing the average jail term for the latter is that a lot of these cases are settled by plea bargains, which by definition means less jail time, because children make lousy witnesses. Unless a prosecutor has adult eyewitnesses and/or overwhelming medical evidence, he or she would rather offer a plea to a lesser crime and get the guy off the street for however long s/he can.

Of course, if the prosecutor does have adult witnesses and overwhelming medical evidence, a defendant will leap at an offer.

Another vote for Lake George. Paradise in upstate NY. You can rent a small cabin or stay at the fancy Sagamore. Kayak or sail on the lake. Rent bikes. Go antiquing in Warrensburg, with a stop at Oscar's Smokehouse.

Hourglass had fantastic food, but how many people in the VVP neighborhood are buying cheese and prosciutto at $20.00 a pound?

If we're a suburb, then Brooklyn is a suburb. As for garbage pickup, it's no quieter in the real suburbs. Plus you get incessant lawnmowers and leafblowers.

Parents receive bus vouchers if the school is 2 or more miles from the child's home. Otherwise, not. I think we are 1.9 miles, so transportation is on us....and well worth it to get to LCCS.

I don't think A-1 can legally chase people off a public sidewalk, and Lee's has had its own share of panhandlers asking for change as you leave.

Jay McCaffrey at 201-521-0600. His office is in Port Liberte. He handled two closings for us and was a pleasure to work with.

We had two successful real estate tax appeals in the 90s. We did not use an attorney. Instead we used an appraiser - Joe D'Amato at www.njpropertytaxconsultants. com.

Is it possible that demographic factors are responsible for the difference? I've heard anecdotally that Hoboken has more singles and more kid-free couples who eat out more often.

Made With Love Bakery makes the New York Times

Home away from home

From tomorrow's NJ section

April 5, 2009
Quick Bite | Jersey City
Baked by Hand, With Heart
By Jersey City
At Made With Love, a cozy bakery and cafe in downtown Jersey City, Celeste Governanti, the owner, makes soups from scratch and specials like Spanish potato tortilla from Thursday through Sunday. The bulk of her business, though, is baking: organic cakes, scones, pies and tarts, muffins and tea breads, cookies and colorful cupcakes.

?Ninety-nine percent of my ingredients are organic,? said Ms. Governanti, who studied artisanal breadmaking at the French Culinary Institute eight years ago while she worked as a fashion executive. ?We do as much as we can by hand.?

Before opening the cafe in December, Ms. Governanti sold her baked goods at various farmers? markets, including at Van Vorst Park in Jersey City, where she gained a loyal clientele that has followed her to her new location. The cafe has seven tables and warm accents like a tin ceiling, as well as a marble counter where pastries are artfully arranged. In the airy kitchen, Ms. Governanti also gives baking and cooking classes, including for children?s parties; she also caters.

At breakfast, there are muffins, granola served with milk or yogurt and crumbly scones (all $3.50). In the afternoon, you can sip a cup of tea ($1.50) and enjoy a miniature apple almond tart made with tender apples and almond butter ($5).

The best time to visit may be on Saturday evenings, when there?s live music ? jazz, rhythm and blues and tango ? and when Ms. Governanti serves rustic mini pizzas, empanadas and the like. If you can?t make it on Saturday, savory goodies are available Thursday through Sunday.

Made with Love Artisan Bakery and Cafe, 530 Jersey Avenue, Jersey City; (201) 850-3260. Open Tuesday and Wednesday, 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. madewithloveorganics.com

JC Charter School Principal Honored

From today's Jersey Journal

Principal being honored at charter schools conference
Tuesday, March 31, 2009

The principal of the Learning Community Charter School of Jersey City will receive the School Leader Award today from the New Jersey Charter Public Schools Association as it opens its annual conference in Trenton.

Susan Grierson is being recognized for collaborative approaches, accessibility to students, parents and staff, introducing innovative art education programs, cultivating and sustaining a positive school culture, and fostering an inclusive work environment and a creative learning process for every student.

"This year we are making several awards in several categories to recognize outstanding accomplishments by New Jersey charter public schools, by people who work for our schools and by people whose support has helped advance the charter public school movement in New Jersey," said Jessani Gordon, NJCPSA executive director.

There are 62 charter schools in New Jersey, with enrollment at 19,000. New Jersey's charter public schools serve a higher percentage of minority and at-risk students than traditional district schools and are in great demand, with 11,000 children on entrance waiting lists.

I'd rather have licensed drivers on the road, than unlicensed. At least, you know they've passed a road test. Not giving people licenses doesn't mean they're not going to drive any more than not legalizing pot means people aren't going to smoke.
