Of course they're death-traps. They're underground!!! If you are claustrophobic take a ferry.

No joke. I'm at Christopher St. every day & that station is scary. I don't even know how it's legal to have just one entrance/exit. In the past, there were times that I just left the station if the platform was too crowded--train problem or not. I'd rather walk down to the WTC than get stuck in there. Thank God my company started flex-time, so I'm never there during rush hour anymore.

It should not be a question of neighbors wanting this or that when it comes to public safety. The bottom line is that the Port Authority did not push hard enough.

Um... deathtraps? People die in death traps. People don't die on the PATH.

Besides, the PA wanted to open up a second exit at 9th Street a few years ago but the neighbors wouldn't let them. They successfully re-opened the second entrance at Grove Street.

PATH service cut throughout rush hour
by Joe Malinconico/The Star-Ledger

Wednesday April 30, 2008, 4:30 PM

NEW YORK - PATH service between 33rd Street and the Journal Square and Hobokenstations has been suspended in both directions this evening, officials said.

Port Authority spokesman Steve Coleman said it is unclear if the service will resume in time for tomorrow morning's rush hour.

Trains are continuing to run between Newark and Hoboken and the World Trade Center as well s between Hoboken and Journal Square.

NJ Transit is crosshonoring all PATH tickets on trains between Newark and New York Penn Stations.

Officials said the outage is due to signal and power cable damage caused by a small manhole fire east of Christopher Street Station earlier today.

Some 58,000 riders use the PATH 33rd Street line daily.

PATH service suspended due to smoke at Christopher Street

by The Associated Press
Wednesday April 30, 2008, 12:44 PM

PATH service has been suspended in both directions between Journal Square and 33rd Street in Manhattan and Hoboken and 33rd Street due to a smoke condition, officials said.

Passengers aboard a train have been evacuated at the Christopher Street station in lower Manhattan. There are no injuries.

PATH spokeswoman Jenn Friedberg said the source of the smoke is not immediately known. It was reported shortly after noon.

Fire officials are at the scene.
