FROM East District JCPD with attachment below:
As many of you are aware - there is a homeless issue within this city, your district, and your neighborhood. Many of you and/or community members have voiced concerns and complaints on the homeless. The JCPD, East District, is currently working with city and local agencies in dealing with and assisting the homeless. I ENCOURAGE each of you to particpate with the HCAEH (Hudson County Alliance to end Homelessness) on January 25, 2007. Again, please read, print and distribute the attached to all community members, neighbors, family and friends. The homeless issue is a state, city and community issue. Regards. P.O. Dina Reilly Below if the attachment, cut and pasted in text form: On January 25, 2007 the Hudson County Alliance to End Homelessness will be linking the HUD mandated Point in Time Survey, to assess the number and needs of the homeless in our community, with the statewide Project Homeless Connect effort, a one day event to be held at the Jersey City Armory, that will provide those without a permanent residence, and experiencing Homelessness with services, food, and clothing. January 25, 2007 To make this event a success, we will need support and involvement from the entire community in a variety of ways. Donations: Provision of a unique service at the Project Homeless Connect Site Donations of Prepared Food Clothing (i.e. Jackets, socks, underwear) Useful Items (i.e. Flashlights, Toiletry Packs) Volunteers Needed to Administer Point in Time Survey: Unsheltered/Street Count (Morning & Evening Shifts) On-Site at Project Homeless Connect (10am -7pm) If you are interested in donating items, or volunteering to participate in this event, please contact: Susan Milan, JCECDC at (201) 604.2600 x. 310 or SMilan@jcecdc.org, or Jacob de Lemos, Hudson County, (201) 795. 6493 or jdelemos@hudsoncountynj.org

Hello all and Happy New Year! Just a reminder! Our next meeting will be on Monday, Jan. 8th, at 7pm, Grace Van Vorst Church located on Erie Street and 2nd Street. Please enter through the red door on 2nd Street.
Below is the agenda but you can still email any concerns by replying to this email (downtownjcwatch@gmail.com ) . The East District Captain, Cpt. Brian McDonough, and the Community Relations Officer, Ofc. Reilly, will arrive about 7:30 pm. Councilman Steven Fulop will be in attendance. If you have any concerns, please reply to this email. As discussed in our past meetings, we would like to begin organizing and uniting residents within certain areas. Each meeting will be dedicated to that area. This Monday, Jan. 8th, we would like to focus on Mercer and Wayne Street Areas. This is an attempt to unite members within these areas so they can build a phone tree, patrol together, and also know their neighbors. Mercer Street already has a well connected group so this is an ideal time to get to know them. We ask that if you live in this area to please attend this meeting by replying to this email. We, especially, need Wayne Street residents to come out . The upcoming meetings will focus on the following areas: Feb. 12th - Monmouth/Brunswick Streets March 12th - Erie/8th Streets (we need more Erie members!) Agenda 7pm Brief Introductions and meet new members 7:15 Mahaley Stewart Bowles of Partners in Prevention will present tips on crime prevention and services available in Jersey City. 7:25 Questions 7:30 Police to arrive Notes from 12/11 mtg. The Community Relations Officer, Ofc. Reilly, reminded members to take extra precautions this Holiday Season. Please be sure to turn on a Radio or TV if you plan to leave your house, even for work. Also, do not leave any packages in your car and please remove your GPS systems from the vehicle. If lighting is a problem on your street, please report it to www.pseg.com (write down the pole number or the address the pole is closest to, be very descriptive.) Another tip that was shared was to leave a dog bone or dog leash by your front door. While walking home, walk in well lit areas, cross the street if area is not well lit. Many people tend to talk on the cell phone while walking home, this makes you a likely target for robbery since it appears you are not paying attention. So please get off the phone once you are alone on the street and be alert. The numbers for the Burglary, Burglary and Theft to Auto in the Harsimus Cove and Van Vorst Park for the month of November and up to the Dec. meeting was "0". This is an outstanding improvement for this time of the year for our areas in the past 3 years. The amount of robberies in both areas is 3 which is also the lowest number that has been reported though we are always concerned when someone has been robbed. Normally, both areas (Harsimus Cove and Van Vorst Park) receive their own numbers and the numbers range from 3 to 10 for each crime activity: Burglary, Burglary and Theft to Auto, and then Robbery. Upcoming Events January 25th will be a day dedicated to the NJ statewide coordinated "Project Homeless Connect" and Hudson Alliance to End Chronic Homelessness in Hudson County's "Point in Time Count"survey of the homeless. We ask that you go to the link below for more information about providing food, clothing, blankets and services as well as volunteering for any part of that day at the Armory (678 Montgomery St)from 10 until 6:30PM. During the week, you may bring and donate any of these items to St. Lucy's Shelter for the Homeless at 619 Grove Street, Jersey City, NJ 07310 Please contact: Dale Hardman for more info at: 347-789-7508 or brightmoments@gmail.org or Kristin Green at 908.272.5363 kgreen@monarchhousing.org http://www.monarchhousing.org/news/ehtezine.html#4: -- This email was brought to you by the Downtown Jersey City Watch ( downtownjcwatch@gmail.com ). If you have any information relating to the robbery at Christo's, please call the Jersey City Policy Department - East District - at 201-547.5477. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: JNord5852@aol.com [mailto:JNord5852@aol.com] Sent: Friday, December 15, 2006 11:37 AM Subject: Christo's "Downtown" Mini-Mart & Pizzeria Robbed! December 15, 2006: Christo's "Downtown" Mini-Mart & Pizzeria, #301 8th Street, (corner of Coles and 8th Streets) was robbed last night. Adel, the store owner, told me this morning that some time between closing of the store last night and this morning before opening the store, robbers entered into the back fenced area and broke through the back door of Christo's with crow bars. Stolen were: All the scratch off lottery tickets, cash register contents, and a recent $3,000.00 delivery of cigarettes. East District Police were called and came to Christo's. I don't know, as I will be at the DJCW mtg.,since I'm sure my opinion about the negative impact on the neighborhood by only providing 80% parking will be emphasized by many there at the Newport Associates presentation. Steve has been known to make several meetings in a night though I don't know how he does it!

I just noticed that tonight's DJCW meeting is in direct conflict with the last minute Newport Associates public courtesy meeting before their Planning Board approval tomorrow.
Anyone know which meeting Fulop is going to be at if either?

(Note, we are now in December, which means the rates will go up at this time). Individuals trespassing the yards was also brought up by one member in the Mercer St. area. Also, other association events will/can be announced at our monthly meetings/agenda email. Apologies to the most faithful members who we were not able to promote their events in the past. I will try to attend, probably not able to.. but I have a question for this person (Jim Ganley, from the Neighborhood Improvement Division) or anyone who cares to comment:
Will he issue tickets to homeowners even though trash in the immediate property was dumped by someone else? What if I can prove that it came from a neighbor(complete with letters with addresses, etc.)? I live on the corner of 9th and Manila, and people routinely leave their trash here. 2 days ago ,I saw a case of Corona Beer with about 3-4 empty bottles, and an unknown blue plastic bag next to it. It's still there. Right on the wall, there's a half-consumed bottle of Snapple today. At any given time there will be cigarette boxes, empty potato chip bags, sometimes a tire,or remnants of an oil change, 4 litres of 10W-40 I've lived here since 1996, and after picking up others people's trash for years, I've stopped a couple of years ago. Just tired of that crap.

I got stuck with workmen at my apt until about 8:20, I came out to see if there was anyone on my corner (Wayne & Barrow). I have to say at the time the park was eerily deserted. I'm sorry I missed hooking up with the others on my street

The Bright and Jersey Ave group met at 7:00 and we visited until about 7:40. There were a few of us there. It was nice to meet the neighbors and we did not see anything out of the ordinary. Thanks Pam for organizing this.

Our group by 4th St. and Coles hung out until almost 8:30 pm. The group had almost 10 people at some point, some of them dog owners with their doggies. It was very nice to meet some of the neighbors... Coles Street between 4th and 5th was fairly quiet, nothing to report... we did see the corfew van driving by couple of times. We were also strategizing on how to draw the trick-or-treat crowds tomorrow evening into Coles St. between 4th and 5th... it looks like the folks at 4th Street (between Jersey and Coles) tend to steal the show during Halloween night...

Bdlaw, elgoodo's guess is exactly right. Too often calls report a "gang of kids", which is really a "group of kids" as they don't know if they are in a gang or not and you know yourself that police response in timeliness is relative to importance. Good guess, elgoodo!

Neeners, good that you and your group were out tonight.
It was just me on 3rd street tween Erie & Jersey. I was outside from 7 until 8:45. Saw many kids, teenagers, several in groups just having a good time. Only suspicious thing was a group of kids in white tshirts/black/dark coats loudly walking fast on Erie St. heading south towards Hamilton Park area. Mainly saw lots of speeding cars on my block, one car with kids yellin out the window (good for them). Spoke with several new neighbors next door, walking their respective dogs and they both told me about an incident that happened Sun night with egg throwers on Erie/3rd st. and possible attempted breakin from fire escape at bldg. on the same corner. Don't know if it was reported but 3 people told me this including one in my bldg. who said he heard the same story. Nice night to hang and smoke my pipe!

Our group of folks ranged from 6-8 or 10, I think. We stayed there for 40 minutes. I was happy to see the police on bikes, a squad car/van, and an officer on a motorcycle making the rounds in the short time we were there. Didn't see anything suspicious. Actually, I don't think I saw any kids the whole time. Thanks for organizing this. It was nice to meet more neighbors.

Purely a guess: Maybe because some people toss that word around without any indication that it is actually true. I'm talking about the word "gang" to indicate ACTUAL gang activity as opposed to simply referring a group of kids as a "gang". I'm sure (at least I hope) that the police keep tabs on any actual gang-related activity and most laypeople would not have that good a handle on what is actually gang-related vs ordinary troublemakers or non-gang-related crime. Just a guess.

Uhm... Anyone? Hello? Bueller? I'm not trying to bust your chops (no pun intended) but I really would like to know the rationale behind this.

Err... why? Legitimate question. In conversation, I would most likely refer to a large group of people engaged in some kind of activity as a "gang."
