Neverleft You can still go by the parking lot for Bruno's on Summit Avenue. The brick entrance walls & fencing are still there.

I feel sorry for all of the newcomer?s they missed eating at this great establishment?..

Mickey Rooney's Wiener World over by the Hudson Mall in one of those oddly shaped round(?) buildings by Dunkin Donuts ..early 80?s.

Here?s another..over in that big empty lot on the corner of Rt 440(1&9) and Comunipaw Ave. There was a motel named the Hudson Motor Lodge (yellow sign is still there) next to it going toward Newark was a diner called The Colony Diner. Both were ripped down because of soil contamination. I recall two attempts to build on the lot. One was an office tower with retail space the other years later was a futuristic Audi dealer. Both deals fell through.

Thank you!!!! I have been trying to remember the name for years..I went right on Google after I read your reply.

Check out this link?. great little piece about someone remembering the ice cream at Bruno's ,it even has a link to a picture of Bruno?s.

Bruno's

"a Jersey City landmark on Summit Avenue that contained a private room where Mayor Frank Hague and his successor and nephew, Mayor Frank Hague Eggers, dined and held conferences."

Sad that was a great JC landmark with a lot of history?GONE!

Ahhh The Alp?s ..I recall in the late 70?s JC was getting so bad the old folks wouldn?t come out of their houses. The Alp?s was losing big time business. So The Alp?s started a door to door limo service for them to come and eat.

Ok a little help from the old-timer?s here. When I was a kid we use to go to a ?fancy? restaurant over by the Medical Center. I thought it was on Balwin but from looking at a Google map of ?Summit and Fairmount Jersey City? it looks like it was on the corner there. I do remember it was on a corner property and it took up a lot of land. It was a beautiful old wooden mansion or funeral home that was converted to a restaurant. I think it started with a ?B? . It was ripped down in the 70?s and replaced with a few ugly 2 family houses. If you look at the Goggle map you can see what I think is the foundation outline of the restaurant in the green grass. Does anyone remember it?

DickCheney you're right. Al Newman's on 440 always served the underaged high school kids. Spent many a night there. Robertson's at the square was great. But the Tripoli on Newark Ave was the best. Everything was homemeade. They had the best chicken soup ever. Puccini's used to be called the Villa Capri.

Just thought of another fancy ?jacket and tie? place. Remember the old Divine Fairmont Hotel on Duncan and the Boulevard? I think I had my Communion and graduation luncheon?s there.

Newbies check out this website ..looks like it has stuff from 1962. Cool pictures. See there were signs of ?affluent? life before you guys showed up. Check out those clothes!!

http://www.libertynet.org/fdipmm/hotels/fairmont.html

As I recall a developer purchased the Hotel in the 70?s(?) and was going to rip it down. Somehow the city/county got involved turned it into an old folk?s home. Thank God!

Father Divine?.

George Baker Jr. (c. 1876 ? September 10, 1965), also known as Father Divine, was an African American spiritual leader[1] from about 1907 until his death. His full self-given name was Reverend Major Jealous Divine, and he was also known as "the Messenger" and George Baker early in his life. He founded the International Peace Mission movement, formulated its doctrine, and oversaw its growth from a small and predominantly black congregation into a multiracial and international church.

Controversially, Father Divine claimed to be God. Some contemporary critics also claimed he was a charlatan, and some suppose him to be one of the first modern cult leaders. However, Father Divine made numerous contributions toward his followers' economic independence and racial equality.

JS ? Cosmo?s diner across from John?s Bargain Store.

JS - The Jade Chinese restaurant between Liss and John?s Bargain Store. (I think that was the name rumor was.. that is were the cat in Chinese food rumor originated . Hey reminds me of an old song?.The Jersey Bounce. ?it started in Journal Square and somebody heard it there?)

JS- Ponderosa Steak House ? next to John?s Bargain Store.

JS ? Plaza Hotel Restaurant. (this was a fancy place..I remember I needed a jacket and tie)

JS ? Chock full of nuts

JS ? Excelsior(?) Diner (over by the Hotel Plaza)

JS ? Liss diner section? Liss was a big drug store way before the CVS?s of the world.

JS ? Robertson?s over by the Path Plaza.

Glenwood Inn - Westside and Glenwood. That became O'Hara's big time hang out for SPC kids. The guy who created O'Hara's needed a name, he looked out of the window over at the cemetery picked the name off of the tallest monument..O?HARA.

Astro Burger (or was it Hotdog) over on R440(1&9)/Sip (now wonder bagal)

I'm intrigued by the history of Captain Al's Harbor Casino.

Was it really filled with old salty fishermen?

Who was Captain Al? A real guy or just the name of the place?

When did it change over to the modern version?

OK that's it. I didn't realize there were so many lifers on this board. There is strength in numbers. We're takin over. Yuppies, go take a hike.

Yeah Meyers was a nice old fashioned ice cream parlor, all wood paneled, tin ceiling, mirrored and big marble soda fountain. Another further north I think called Soul's (or Havemeyer ?) is now Ceviche if not mistaken. If you went to Silvers you must be 100 yrs. old. Cheap Sam, now THAT was a store.

Anyone else remember Meyer's ...I think there was one on Central and one on Bergen Ave too

Tippy's that was my favorite place for a burger. My perfect day as a kid would have been to go to Silver's to pick out a toy, then go to Tippy's for a burger , and then to the bakery that was near the precinct (was it Family Pride?) for an eclair. Today's kids get Papa John's and .99 cent stores-they don't even know what they are missing

On an upnote though, my Mom and her friends still go to the Lincoln Inn for steak sandwiches. They love them

And although it is not as old as some of the other places we've mentioned...Renato's is the best Italian food in Jersey City I think. It beats Laicos, Prestos, Rita and Joes, etc

Al Neuman's, I went there often. The place to go when already drunk to have a few ice cold pitchers with your burger, fries and rings and get even drunker. And oh, the chromium! The chromium there was to die for.

Of course the official name for the place was "Tippy's Charcoal Haven" . Had a soft serve ice cream place on the side and I seem to remember they had a pizza section for a while too. Another soft serve place was Rands at the top of Newark by Dickinson.

Captain Al's was a GREAT place! Grizzled old tugboat guys, who were real drinkers too with great stories.

Anybody remember the place the bar that Rose ran who died of cancer in the mid-80's with the lesbian bartenders, though it was a workingman's bar, around the corner from Flamingo Grill??

2 McDonalds type brand X places that were shortlived in the early '70's. Ginos on Westside, the Gino's Giant was superior to the Big Mac.
Mister 'S' on state hwy (139) now a tire place, was essential in assuaging water pipe induced cravings.

Bickfords cafeteria in the Square. I remember the little bowls of mashed potatoes that were extruded like Mr. Softee with one pea at the top like a cherry. Very intriguing to a 3 or 4 year old. Also Liss's drug store, Woolworth, Kreske, Grants lunch counters. Weirdest of all was the Texas Weenie joint across from the police station on Central.
