The Downtown Watch meeting is Sep 11, 7pm, at Grace Church Van Vorst, in the sanctuary (entrance on Second Street near Erie).
It is the second Monday of every month at 7pm.
Last month DeFazio was there, and the new police chief.

Thanks!

Open a free account at Photobucket.com or one of its peers, upload a photo, then cut and paste the "tag" they provide into your post. done. You can even reduce the size of the image from their site.

I highly recommend that you keep trying with the news producers, and for others who have been crime victims and witnesses, you should reach out too. If you've got the stomach for it, just bombard them over and over again. I work in PR and it's not uncommon to have to keep trying (and trust me, I am pitching much less newsworthy things than this). I'll start making some calls and sending e-mails too.

The more they hear about what is going on, the more likely they are to come over and investigate it for themselves. And they will start asking the questions we've been asking for a while now, but this time on television.

The thread is called "Local Television Contacts" -- don't know how to create the fancy link like other people do.

I emailed every single one of the news links that were posted. I have yet to hear back. Please feel free to check out this list under the general forum and email as well. I think they need more than one person to express concern about our unsafe neighborhood and lack of common police sense. Seriously, how can the police tell me they were waiting for the Board of Ed to approve the release of the tape!? There was EVIDENCE on it!! I went every single morning, after speaking to the head of security and being told that he is in at 8, to try and speak to him about the tape. He was NEVER there. I left notes, number, etc each and every time. I even called through out the day and never heard back. The police told me they "didn't have time" to sit and watch the entire tape...so if WE wanted to and had permission to, then we should be the ones to watch it. Um, I have a psych degree, not criminal justice! Why must WE do THEIR jobs?! Sorry I am ranting, but I've had just about enough! :(

Today, I was in Van Vorst Park around 6 p.m. when I saw two bicycle cops ride past. On the one hand, it's great that there's a bicycle patrol at all, and it's possible some criminal could be making mischief there at 6 p.m.

On the other hand, when you come right down to it, the percentage of crime committed around here in broad daylight is pretty low, and there are certainly plenty of nice people in VVP around 6 p.m. to help stop and observe any crimes that are committed. It would be great if the cops would spend less time patrolling on the family-friendly shifts and a lot more time patrolling from 8 p.m. to about 4 a.m.

If Coles Street has always been as "swamped in crime" as you state (and I've heard stuff like that in the past, to a letter degree) isn't that all the more reason to have tamed it by now?

[quote]

==============================

AFter many years of pressure and lots and lots of
reported crimes, in the late eighties/early nineties, we got the police to start paying
attention to Coles and Third. They did so for a year
or so, and then were called somewhere else; and once
the pressure from citizens relaxes for a moment,
the cops move on to another hotspot. Coles has
always been troubled by crime; but if there are not
folks living there who make a strong and steady stink
about the crime, little or nothing gets done.
Coles has been sort of a no-mans' land til recently,
when more young people are starting to go there
to live. The cops have traditionally left Coles St.
alone, for a variety of political reasons. You need to know
the history to understand the situation.

Some Harsimus Cove Neighborhood Association members lived on the corner of Coles and Third, and their safety
was always threatened, so the association tried to come
to their aid. This was many years ago, when there were a
strong neighborhood association and active blockwatch
groups and a good working relationship with
Capt. Henne. We got some help for a while, and then
it petered out because of shooting sprees down
in the Greenville projects, which took precedence.

You may fail to realize that getting the police to pay
attention to a certain area is a full time job, and
the citizens have to be relentless, and that eventually
the pressure will relax from sheer burnout, and then
you have the crime creeping back.
It is not that long-time residents here have not
worked hard to achieve a safe environment; it is
that doing so requires the sort of commitment
that few people can give -- full-time and dogged.

If only the newcomers work as hard as we did
years ago, things may just turn around a bit.
You have to get your bullhorn out and keep it
blaring 24/7. Don't think we didn't do our job.
The fact that you are able to come here and
reside in a fairly civilized environment is testimony
to our hard work. In 1982, you simply did not
go out after twilight; you never left
the house empty because there would be nothing
left when you came back; you put your bedrooms
in the back of the bldg. so you would not be
shot by stray bullets thru the
windows while you slept at nite; etc., etc.
You have no idea how far we have come!

I agree that something should be done. We are looking into getting it out on the news, but if you plan on writing something, I am very willing to help. I am sick over this! I also don't have money to move again since I sold my car to move here two months ago. Anyone have ideas on how to find a good safe place in Hoboken??? Anyone have connections they can put me in touch with?? I am desperate.

It was your post, I assumed it was daytime. Now I see that no time was mentioned. Ass (not u) me. Sorry.

this is really scary. Someone should write an op-ed letter to the jersey journal (maybe I will) and contact city hall/steve fulop. i know steve's been pretty vocal in criticizing the JCPD but something more needs to be done. ( i do appreciate seeing the cops on bikes but i wish there were more of them.)

i love jersey city but im scared to leave my apartment and go to work!

Steve - what can you do to help stop downtown robberies, burglaries and break-ins? healy and troy have clearly done nothing.

it's not fair we pay these high rents and have to live in fear.

Is it legal to put up fliers and post on the poles in the area or do you need permits?

If I wasn't a regular on this site I wouldn't have an idea that all this crime was taking place. I have a feeling that most people in the neighborhood have no idea that all this stuff is going on.

If fliers were put up around the neighborhood detailing the crime spree I think the non-cyber segments of the community would be able to put further pressure on the powers that be.

I'm telling you, we need neighborhood patrols from 12 MIDNIGHT until sunrise! The cops won't do it, the guardian angels stop at 11. It's up to US. I'm completely serious here! If a whole bunch of people get together on various nights and just walk around, it just might work. It's time to take this shit back! It really sucks that it has to come to this, but you have to be your own police around here. If any people are interested in doing this at all, we really should. 5 people per night from 12 to 6 just walking around, carrying mace (completely legal) and a police scanner (so we can do the work for them, then they can use their cuffs and take the credit) and phones. It's ridiculous that people pay these prices, etc and can't even sleep in peace!

This summer at least, Academic definitely has had some kind of sporatic activity in the daytime hours and sometimes into the evening. I don't know if they are classes or some kind of sports stuff or what. I don't remember this being true in the past but this summer, there has definitely been stuff going on sporatically at the school. Their security guy has been around too.

Does Academic have classes during the summer?

Maybe not, and, even if it does, chances are a lot of people go on vacation during the summer and forget to check voicemail. So, I think it would be good to understand Academic's side before lawyering up.

Also: I think this sort of thing has always happened off and on since I moved to the area in the mid 90s. (Remember the summer when everyone on First Street suddenly got new front doors?) Given how unreliable burglary statistics are, it's hard to tell whether the situation is really any worse than it was.

But the cops should have acted more aggressively on this and gotten the Academic videotape themselves because it seems really obvious that the people who robbed the apartments are probably the same young creeps who are causing a lot of the other problems downtown.

I can see why cops might prefer to make a priority, say, of shutting down the heroin supermarkets the MLK light rail stop. But, given that they don't actually seem to be doing that, it would be great if they could at least find the time to chase down some rotten kids.

It's the landlord's fault, the super's fault, and the burglar's fault. This could have so easily been avoided.

This is absolutely insane. And totally right for television. Call Channel 5 and talk to Arnie Diaz. We need to start alerting the tri-state area to the completely ridiculous situation.

I'm going to pull together a press list that people can use so we can bombard the press. (I know I've said this before but the summer got in the way and now I am super pissed.)

PM me if you are interested in getting a copy of it. I promise to have it to any/all interested parties by this Friday. I may even post the names and numbers of local TV producers in another post if you think it will help.

yep, that's the answer...sue the landlord and sue the school.

funny, murican and brewster don't even discuss blaming the criminals or the lack of police success in putting a stop to the summer crimewave.

As bad as the robbery was, I find the fact that you couldn't get the security tape outrageous. I live next to Academic too and always assumed that the loss of privacy due to the cameras bristling everywhere on that building was balanced by increased security, both in the form of deterrence and evidence.

Businesses and institutions in our neighborhoods need to be good neighbors, and Academic gave you the finger. I wonder if there's any grounds for lawsuit in there? I don't believe in "lawsuit lottery" mentality, but suits are often the only way to change antisocial behaviors. There needs to be a downside to them for not cooperating with you or the police.

I am sorry to hear about this burglary. 1 1/2 years ago, my house (Harsimus Cove) was burglarized and it all happened in 45 minutes or so. I left at about 9:30 am to drop off my daughter in school and came back home about 45 minutes to an hour later to see my house in a scene just out of the movies. I had a bag of M & M Peanuts (the big one's from bj's) and they were all over the floor. They took my lap top, palm pilot, money, all of our jewelry and cameras. It was devastating. They were getting ready to take the TV, DVD and so on ... (assumption on my part because of how everything was positioned in the middle of my living room) when I interrupted. I ran off and called 911. One police officer came an hour later (my husband got home faster from the city) and had the nerve to tell us that his starting time at the precint was 11am so they were waiting for him to come in. Anyway, till today we have not heard anything at all from the police nor that our case has been closed. I also asked around in the area for any witnesses and not a soul saw anything. I do hope that you are luckier than we were and that you are able to find them.

Today we have a Labrador, an alarm, bars on the windows and gates; moving out right now is just not an option.

I am sorry to hear of your loss.
Call Landlord- Tenant Relations 201-547-5127

and Housing Code Enforcement 201-547-4825

You are entitled to safety on the premises, the landlord's actions with the front door are in violation of this.

They should send an inspector and fine your landlord.

My 3 roommates and I, as well as the four upstair neighbors at 7th and Coles were all burglarized on Monday, August 7th. I returned home from work to find quite a few cops already searching our apartment. Someone or some people kicked in the front building door, then kicked in the 2 apartment doors. [snip]

One kick to all three doors and they were in. [snip]

One more little rant...our landlord is not doing much to create a safer apartment building...she simply attached a storm door to the outside, which we realized is a fire hazard and now needs to come down. The doors that were kicked in were nailed back to the molding, painted over, and were not supported in any way. This can happen again in this apt building. There are no bars on the windows or other security measures. Please please make sure something is being done in your apts to try to prevent this from happening!
