JERSEY CITY — The (slightly tamer) show must go on!

Lillian Bustle, the burlesque performer whose act was deemed too obscene by Jersey City's legal eagles, is planning a new show at Newark Avenue venue FM Wednesday night after the city changed its mind and gave her its go-ahead.

Bustle, 39, called the news "a big relief" and said she hopes this episode encourages city officials to "fully research all the factors on their plate" in the future.

You are right, pacoYtaco, about the changing times. But I also remember sex clubs in New York taking their business cards and putting all over the sidewalk of schools especially religious schools. The bright colored paper was very attractive to kindergarten children. Be careful what you wish for, you just might get it and wish for the days when these establishments were not here.

Funny that we live in a society where people have no problem wearing vagina hats to protest in New York City in front of establishments full of children, yet a show at a local club is considered obscene.

I'm not surprised that in over 10 years the Jersey City ABC has not changed one bit from attacking small bars and restaurants with a person running an iPod and writing tickets for "DJ and no cabaret license."

again, if you're equating Times Square of 50 years ago with the burlesque scene of today, you are completely out of touch.

It is not one burlesque that is the problem, it will be many adult entertainment sites in JC that will change this city, Times Square did start out with one adult show before it became famous for these places. Newark has many adult entertainments and it has a lot of crime. Adult entertainment and crime go together like bread and butter. There will be an interest to bring more adult entertainment to JC.

I am disappointed it was not Ms Bustle who was dressed as a part of the female anatomy.

I guess she does it every night so this time she let someone else run with it.

Burlesque performer urges change to obscenity law

It was a wild scene Wednesday night outside City Hall in Jersey City, where a burlesque performer, two City Council members and a woman dressed as a part of the female anatomy gathered to protest the city's old obscenity law.

Lillian Bustle, whose burlesque career has come under fire by city attorneys who say her shows may be unlawfully obscene, rallied her supporters to urge the council to amend the law, which dates to 1982 and was apparently intended to keep strip clubs out of the city.

Sorry, I_heart_JC, I remember those days since I worked in NYC, I had to pass Times Square almost on a daily basis in the during the 1960s. It did have burlesque and other sexual attractions. The movie, "Midnight Cowboy," captured the seediness of Times Square well. Mayor Guiliani cleaned up Times Square by closing down the sex attractions. He totally transformed the area.

Newark is known for crime and Newark has many adult entertainments also known as strip clubs. Certain things feed off each other, high crime areas and adult entertainment. Property values will drop in a heart beat if this city becomes another Newark.

I agree that there are worse things on the internet but I also remember Times Square in the 1960s to the 1980s. It was crime ridden due to the strip clubs, peep shows and other sexual attractions. As archaic as those laws are, they might prevent JC from becoming a Times Square from the past.

this obscenity law is so outdated, especially when i or anyone, can go on the internet and see things 5X raunchier than a burlesque show.

He said that that the law would be rewritten on Twitter. Not sure what else he can do. He can't just make a new law on his own - that's what the council is for.

And, Steve Fulop should do more than just blast the legal department via Twitter.

After burlesque flap, Jersey City to revise old obscenity law

Jersey City may revise its obscenity law in the wake of its push to halt a local burlesque show that the city's legal team said would violate the 36-year-old ordinance.

The city faced criticism for putting an end to the show, which was going to star burlesque performer Lillian Bustle. Even Mayor Steve Fulop appeared to take his own legal team to task, calling them "very prude" on Twitter.

JC voter, while amusing, is definitely not James Solomon, who probably doesn?t even read I jclist.

But on another note how cool is it that we have FM a space that feels old school with live performances. It?s a pretty awesome place and makes me feel like I?m in college again.

Based on the below has it been confirmed whether the letter to FM is a fake? Could it be from someone in the building or living nearby? I have to check the place, I haven't had an opportunity since they changed the format. Btw Solomon seems to like the place as per his post on fb.

? 251-4. During the summer when JC has its festivals, this ordinance might. Afterall, if you go after an enclosed area to see the burlesque, then why ignore the open environment where similar behavior occurs?

The corporate council is appointed and reports to the mayor, serving at his/her pleasure. He would not go in a different direction publicly.

I do feel bad for both the performer and bar to be placed under pressure and the spotlight. Hopefully, they will eventually benefit from the publicity.

My main point here is that this letter was written in haste and delivered at leisure. It had nothing to do with obscenity and everything to do with damaging FM amid a fragile transition.
How has Lillian managed to escape censure thus far? Why now?
