Good job Steve, 25k is nothing next to the 3 million wasted fighting the reval. But couldn't one phone call to Murphy kill this?

I am curious to see Liberty National's take on this proposal... I know years ago Tiger had to park his yacht over at the marina @ Battery Park. Would they want an active marina, this proposed size next to them?

Jersey City hires law firm to fight new Liberty State Park plan

Updated 12:03 PM; Posted 11:19 AM
State plans for marina in south side of Liberty State
By Ron Zeitlinger
The Jersey Journal

Jersey City is not sitting back and waiting to see how the proposed development of Liberty State Park plays out.

The city announced this morning that it has hired the law firm of Riker Danzig, Scherer, Hyland, & Perretti, LLP to protect Liberty State Park against the development of a new marina.

The Jersey Journal reported last week that Suntex, which operates Liberty Landing Marina on the north side of the park, has a proposal before the state Department of Environmental Protection to lease 45 acres of the the south side of the park to open another marina; and to expand the existing marina by 10 acres.

"Once again, the Christie Administration has proven their utter disregard for the importance of public parks in New Jersey," Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop said. "This development is one that would drastically change the landscape of one of the state's best public parks, and to add insult to injury, has progressed up until this point behind closed doors.

"This lack of integrity has become business as usual, and this time, one of our best public assets will suffer unless we as a city fight back."

City officials said the law firm will pursue legal options against the proposed marina, citing a misalignment between the proposed use and the original purpose of the public park, as well as safety concerns for residents and local wildlife.

The contract with the firm is not to exceed $25,000, according to a resolution on the agenda for tonight's City Council meeting.

"We are immensely grateful to Mayor Fulop for delivering the legal resources necessary to protect the south side of Liberty State Park for the public to continue to picnic, fish, walk and enjoy unblemished views of the New York Harbor freely," Greg Remaud, deputy director of the NY/NJ Baykeeper, said in a statement.

Sam Pesin, president of the Friends of Liberty State Park, has been vocal in his opposition to the proposal. He organized a rally in the park on Dec. 2 to show state leaders the immense local opposition to the plan.

"The Friends of Liberty State Park and all supporters of the park as a local, state, and national treasure with open space and priceless open vistas, are very grateful to the Fulop administration for his determination and dedication in stopping this destructive marina plan from going forward," said Pesin, who made details of the park proposal public after making an Open Public Records Act request for the plan.

Liberty State Park group holds protest of state marina plan: 'The people own this park!'

More than 100 residents, activists and local officials came out to the public park to protest a plan the state is mulling to add a marina to the south end of the park.

The park may be the most-visited of the state parks, but according to reports Liberty State Park loses hundreds of thousands of dollars a year. In early 2015 the "Liberty State Park assessment report" was developed and submitted to the state DEP as part of Gov. Chris Christie's "sustainable parks" initiative.

Last year the Friends of Liberty State Park and the city fought a plan to allow commercial barges to be installed on the Hudson River adjacent to Liberty State Park. The plan was eventually scrapped.

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (CBSNewYork) ? A planned building project at Liberty State Park is making waves.

Some people fear the waterfront project will ruin the majestic views.

Liberty State Park is an urban backyard. A peaceful spot to escape the city with clear views of the Veranzano bridge and lady liberty, but Sam Pesin and others say the slice of serenity could be obstructed by boats.

?This is an obscene giveaway. A corporate takeover of a non-commercial, urban, family, peaceful, picnicking side of the park,? Pesin said.

Pesin is fighting a new plan to commercialize the southern end of the public park with a mile long private marina. Renderings were obtained by the Friends of Liberty State Park through a Freedom of Information request and confirmed by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection.

Pesin said the picnic area is jam-packed on summer nights, and so are the parking lots which may be taken away.

Suntex, which operates the marina at the north end, would like to build another private marine ? leasing 45 acres on the southern end for new docks and private parking, paying $900,000 in annual rent to the state for the first three years.

?Having mega-yachts right next to this lawn behind the Statue of Liberty would be an international symbol of everything that?s wrong with America,? Pesin said.

The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection said the private leases would help generate revenue for the park and save taxpayer money by offsetting the cost to repair damaged bulkheads and other upgrades.

Local Noel Perez agreed the area could use a makeover.

?It?s been a long time,? he said.

While John Neider enjoys it just the way it is.

?I think it?s going to disturb the wildlife,? he said.

Greg Remaud with New York/New Jersey Baykeepers said it?s a social justice issue.

?This is the only place in north Jersey for several miles, where you can actually get down, touch the water, throw in a fishing pole,? he said, ?People from all economic levels are able to make it here. Now it will be shut off except to the wealthiest who can afford yachts, and leasing expensive yacht space.?

Suntex did not respond to a request for comment, but its plans include a children?s sailing school, replacement of the public boat launch, a fishing pier, a boat club, and other amenities that will be available to the public.

There will be several public hearings before the proposal is approved by the state.

Why? Gov elect Murphy is worried about Puerto Rico, not JC or the crime in Newark. He ran for governor so he can have a national stage for higher office.

We have to hold commissioner and governor (whoever it is) feet to the fire, especially when they are close to changing job and may have a vested interest in a giving away public property. If Murphy approves this, he will experience Murphy's law likewise

They really propose to take away the public boat launch and parking at the southwestern corner of the park?

The nerve!!!

As someone said the northern marina is a dump, one of the worst maintained parts of the park.

What has Suntex done to even deserve a shot at the southern marina? Nothing.

This is all about the benjamins people - the bulkhead repair costs that the bankrupt, corrupt State of New Jersey does not want to pay.

Fuck them! I am angry. I don't usually show up for public hearings but I will show up for this. This is a fucking outrage.

Christie thinks Liberty State Park needs something to obstruct the view

LSP supporters gather to protest privatization of park

December 8, 2017
By Star-Ledger Editorial Board
eletters@starledger.com

You'd think that Gov. Christie would have learned by now that Liberty State Park is not for sale, but as a parting thumb-in-the-eye to the 5 million people who visit the crown jewel of our park system, he wants to drop a massive yacht marina on its shoreline.

Essentially, he thinks that picnic and fishing areas need a few hundred fuel-sucking monsters that spit noise and smoke and crud into the tidal salt marsh while blocking everybody's view of the upper bay.

This administration would try to privatize anything that isn't nailed down, and this is another bridge too far. Our Department of Environmental Protection wants to lease a 500-yard stretch of waterline for marina development on the south side - the noncommercial side of the park - to the Texas-based company that runs the marina on park's north end.

The cost? No charge, as long as the same company repairs a damaged bulkhead in the existing marina.

The consequences, however, are horrendous: According to the lease term sheet obtained by Friends of Liberty State Park, two parking lots for nearly 250 vehicles get bulldozed.

Worse, they also ignore that the park's south zone is a family place. It is where picnic benches and barbeque pits sit under a magnificent grove of sycamores tilted in perfect symmetry - away from the promenade traffic - and where people fish off the jettys and launch their kayaks.

Here, you have an unobstructed view of the Verrazano-Narrows.

Now that vista will be blocked by a fleet of Ocean Alexanders, trailer storage facilities, and giant fences.

Or just picture Tony Soprano at the wheel of Stugots and multiply it by a hundred.

The families don't need this. No park needs this.

And when the DEP holds the required public hearings on the issue - preferably after the holidays - the governor must hear about it.

We're not against all development. Public amenities are valuable, and even though there is no rule that says parks must make money, LSP generates $1.5 million annually from two restaurants and the north marina.

But our governor's commercial obsession runneth over. In 2014, he tried to shift park control to a commission that oversees development. In 2015, his DEP floated a hotel and a fieldhouse. Each time he loses the debate, because you can't protect sacred ground by taking it from the people whose taxes pay for it.

Three years ago, our state's top scientists and academics told Christie to lay off Liberty State Park, because it is the standard for urban ecological stewardship and "one of the nation's best examples of the Public Trust Doctrine."

We can't say it better than that, Governor. Now kindly back away before you can't resist the urge to do further damage.

The current marina is one of the ugliest, and worst maintained, parts of the park.

Count me in. I'm just afraid this will go the way of the fugly 9/11 memorial, just shoved down our peasant throats since it's state land and they just don't give a fuck what we think.

I'd love to see the number on costs/visitors for other state parks. None of them get the usage of LSP.

CBS was there today filming - I just hope there is enough public outcry to stop this theft of our park.

Comments from FLSP. This is public land confiscation plain and simple. Let's call them and remind them of legal action if they attempt to shove "public hearings" between Xmas and new year. If I knew how to do this I would file a Freedom of Information requests for all records between Christie and DEP. It looks like a departing gift. https://www.facebook.com/friendsoflibertystatepark/?fref=ts

Those footprints are insane... traffic would render that section of the park unusable for bikers.runners. walkers. Did not take a good look, but I assume it would impact recreational boaters who use the "free" boat launch.

I am sure its the typical play to propose the ultimate obscene development as they certainly have here, then scale it back because they listened to the people. Most of that property where they are now contains more derelicts on land then in the water. It looks like Fred Sanford's Boat Yard.

Liberty State Park group plans protest of marina plan

State plans for marina in south side of Liberty State Park

By Terrence T. McDonaldtmcdonald@jjournal.com
The Jersey Journal

JERSEY CITY -- Friends of Liberty State Park is planning a protest next week to show opposition to a plan it says the state is mulling to add a marina to the south end of the park.

State officials have not confirmed there is a plan, but a source with knowledge of the matter told The Jersey Journal that the state is mulling a lease with Suntex Marina to open a private marina along the waterfront near the park's flag plaza. Suntext runs the marina on park's north end.

Friends of Liberty State Park is asking anyone in opposition to a second marina in the 1,200-acre park to meet at the south side picnic area, 200 Morris Pesin Dr., for a group protest photo on Saturday, Dec. 2 at 11 a.m.

Park advocates say a new marina would obstruct views, limit public access to the park and potentially threaten wildlife.

A spokesman for the state Department of Environmental Protection, which runs the park, has said only that the public would have a say on any proposed changes to Liberty State Park.

Mayor Steve Fulop said he is "adamantly opposed" to the marina plan.

"We feel that Liberty State Park doesn't need another marina and the fact that these proposed changes were being done initially in secret speaks to the lack of integrity to the process," Fulop said in an email. "It is a bad plan and we will explore every option to fight it."

Exactly. Added my voice today. I would like to know who I should sue next time I trip on the north marina pathway, I nearly fell face first the other day while training. Part of that area is quite beaten down, it was the worse section of the liberty half a few month ago.

The marina would certainly be a For-Profit privately owned enterprise. Should ANY for-profit business be allowed to allocate for itself pieces of ANY public land? I?m surprised anyone here could rationalize the parceling out of public parkland for ANY non-park related reason, let alone a for-profit one which the public couldn?t be expected to freely benefit from. Even if the Marina was going to be an in-house Parks Department owned and operated concern, we?d all STILL expect the opportunity to weigh in on it and participate in transparent dialogue before it began to be considered seriously. Also I think we would years ago have heard the public clamoring for another marina. I?m very interested in sailing and boating in the harbor and I?ve NEVER in twenty years heard any public suggestion that we should agitate for a marina in this location. There us NOTHING grass roots about this project and it bears all the hallmarks of private concerns operating in secret, NOT an above board legitimate attempt at persuading the public.

For what it's worth, I sent a letter to Governor-Elect Murphy about Martin's lack of response.

Having said that I agree that we don't need a private marina on the south side. On the north side, the assholes that run the marina did not even fix the asphalt path that runs along their marina, it is full of ruts and cracks and not bikeable. They don't care about the park. The park should jack up their rent. No to south marina!

'Not bikeable'? It's not perfect, but I've biked it over and over and over.

SAVE the South Side of LIBERTY STATE PARK from a secret deal for a Massive ?Millionaires? Marina?

Email DEP Commissioner Bob Martin to strongly oppose (even in one sentence) this new south side marina and to demand public hearings.

( This idea came from the Friends of LSP
We just did this - you should too! )

We deserve our park, protect the wildlife at Liberty State Park

Don't take parkland away

Dear Commissioner Martin,

I have lived in Jersey City for more than 20 years, and although I love many things about my city, the lack of green, open space for our communities is a point of serious concern. A growing city needs to balance development with access to public land, and this decision made by the state will severely impact our city and residents.

The outgoing governor and administration should not be allowed to lease our park away to the highest bidder without public hearings and a public comment period. The South Overlook Lawn is a haven for our residents, a place to picnic, play, bike, walk, fish and enjoy the view of the Hudson River and Lady Liberty. A commercial marina will significantly change the footprint of the park and our access and use of the southside lawn.

The residents of Jersey City, and the surrounding areas, deserve access to open land and public parks. Do not take that away without hearing us out first.

Meesha Diaz Haddad, Jersey City

Protect Liberty State Park from development

The Hudson County Group of the New Jersey Chapter of the Sierra Club has passed a resolution to oppose the development of a marina on the south shore of Liberty State Park.

The Hudson County Group is concerned with environmental justice issues and feels that putting yet another marina for wealthy boat owners in Liberty State Park is a theft of the people's common land. These open green and free spaces should be made available for the poor, oppressed workers and immigrants who love and need this park as much as anyone else.

Building a marina on the south side of Liberty State Park also risks damage to the natural environment of the Cove area where various rare and endangered species have been seen, such as the Snowy Owl, the Norther Harrier and the Goshawk.

We call upon our state, county and city governments to do what they can to protect this area of Liberty State Park so that the people will have access to view wildlife and have an open view unobstructed by the toys of the wealthy.

Patricia Hilliard, Secretary of the Hudson County Group-NJ Sierra Club
