I have a 2001 BMW 325i that I would be pleased to have stolen. Note to thief: The door locks don't work, which will be convenient for you, but the radio only picks up Christian stations and there's a terrifying shimmy when you hit 55 mph. Best of luck to you.

Jeez, I left my old banged up german lemon with the forever dead battery running for a few minutes outside of my house on 3rd at the wrong time I guess. Would be a blessing to get that stupid thing off my insurance and I would have given him a laptop or two to take it off my hands. At least nobody would be on the lookout for him because the first time he turned off the key he would've been stranded somewhere and smelled like diesel fuel.
On a serious note, this is pretty sad, foolish or not. Nobody should have their car stolen and it doesn't matter if it was a BMW or an old Ford.

Uh - 20 year old BMW that street parks in JC - at the reasonable mileage high water mark it might be worth $10k; more than likely worth $4-6k (wholesale or trade-in) which is what the insurance company gives you... less the deductible. Additionally insurance payout is considered income - so another third or better will be gone.
That chassis has known battery issues - so not uncommon to let it run to charge. Part it out - maybe $5k IF the exterior lights and interior are in good condition, but it street parks so I'd gamble it hasnt seen a ton of love... and as we know had a maintenance issues. You don't commit insurance fraud on something that has meaningless value... esp given the level of penalty if caught.

It reminds me of a scene in a Great movie called 29th Street where they try to have their car stolen. Anyone else see the movie?

It's called insurance fraud, years ago they'd burn the cars in Newark or Kearny.
This was more like a set up to have the car ripped off and it's probably already chopped into pieces ready to export out in a container to Columbia or somewhere these older Beemer parts will have some value.

If you think JCPD is gonna try to investigate this, you're kidding yourself. This car will eventually show up abandoned after they're done joy riding it or sold for parts. The laptop will be destroyed or sold without a trace.

Unless, of course, that the owner isn't quite as dumb as he seems (unlikely) and he enabled the "Find My Mac" app on his laptop. As soon as that laptop goes on the Internet it's "found" in the sense of an IP Address. The ISPs have a pretty good record of working with law enforcement to provide a street address for any given IP address...

Hey don't worry. The thief probably needed the BMW and laptop more then the victim.

Sunday afternoon at 4 pm -- really? It looks a wealth festival at that time downtown. This story really doesn't make a lot of sense when you read on:
"When the man remembered 30 minutes later that his car was still running, he rushed outside, but it was gone. The driver reported the vehicle stolen at the East District police station shortly after 4 p.m., the report states. The man told police that an Apple laptop,, valued at $1,000, was in the stolen car, police said. "

Idiot. Of course he had a lap top in the car as well. I'm surprised he didn't mention about his bag of diamonds and gold.

A BMW was stolen from a city street Downtown Sunday evening after the owner of the vehicle forgot he left the car running, according to a police report. The 50-year-old driver told police his 2006 black BMW 330I was parked near his Third Street home and he wanted to leave the engine on for a while because his battery was low, police said. More
