This thing registers pretty low on the corruption meter, but it really was poor judgement. Especially in a city that has an almost epic history of graft, you'd have expected them to be smarter. I'm sure it was a nice desk, and probably worth the price, but if it were me I'd have had everybody up and including the mayor sign off on it first. Just dumb.

'Arms length'? They sourced the furniture from the assistant's husband . . . And it's not newsworthy when an employee making 80K gets fired over an ethics violation?

I loved this (old) story about Tom DeGise's chair, which was linked from the original, and includes this gem:

?There?s probably still FBI microphones in it,? Kennelly said of the old chair.

I was looking around the internet does the husbands company have ?thefarmmechanic? in its name? If so it looks like they brand their name in the furniture they create. Interesting stuff.

This really isn't that bad. You don't know what they got for their money. Might have been a great deal for the city.

I've done several thousands of dollars of work for my wife's company and it's mutually beneficial for both of us. I give them my best price, and they get to get exactly what they want because they know me and can work on a custom project with me rather than hiring a designer by the hour.
My portfolio stays fresh looking, their office stays fresh looking.
Quit ragging on the furniture making husbands of the world. hah

No bid contracts for furniture purchases, pay for play contracts getting rescinded-not a good week for City Hall it would seem.

my feeling exactly. i could understand if we were talking about $100,000 but it is only $6,000.

Attitudes like this are what allows continued public corruption to flourish.

Good job Terrence and the JJ for this investigative reporting.

Would this employee have been fired if this story didn't come to light?

Even if the price was totally reasonable (and how can anyone really gauge that?), it is a glaring conflict of interest.

Terrence T. McDonald | The Jersey Journal

The health department shelled out nearly $6,000 for some custom-made furniture made by the company run by the husband of the department's deputy director.

The new furniture includes a $1,175 desk for Health Director Stacey Lea Flanagan, plus four tables and two desk extensions that cost an additional $4,800.

The total paid by the city was $5,975, according to invoices obtained by The Jersey Journal after a public-records request. The invoices indicate the tables have a "branded logo" on them.

perhaps this furniture was better quality and/or cheaper than ikea or steelcase. i don't think $6,000 is outrageous for custom made furniture
