Disappointed with the "new' ACME. Very minor changes and updates from A&P. Meat still expires in one or two days. Produce still below average. Overall, no significant changes at all. Layout remained exactly the same. I'm hoping that the management will be better, but that remains to be seen.

Technically, this is not entirely accurate. There will be a supermarket space in one of the new towers. Shoprite will have the right to be the first one to negotiate a new contract/lease. If they pass on the option, then the lease contract will be put out for others to bid/negotiate. The point being that, there's nothing set on stone specifying Shoprite will be occupying the new supermarket space. If they are smart, they will negotiate and sign the lease. But, who is to say the developer will not make crazy demands during that first round in the hopes of attracting a different/better grocer?

it's a real shame they couldn't find a better retailer than acme for such a good location. acme seems a step below shoprite imo

Since the whole corporation went kaput we don't know if the Newport store was a contributing factor. Maybe for its location, this is a worthwhile model to continue.

I'm not jazzed about Acme at all. At least the Pathmark on Grand will be an Asian supermarket:

"99 Ranch will be coming to the Pathmark location on Grand Street. 99 Ranch is a California based Asian supermarket chain. Tawa Inc. (99 Ranch's parent company) won the bid on the property last month."

Shoprite isn't going away, it's just moving into one of the new towers that are going up in that Pep Boys development area. There will also be a new Shoprite in one of the new JSQ towers. I'll take Shoprite over A&P/Pathmark/Acme any day. A Wegman's would be the jackpot.

went into the acme nee a&p over on 16th st. shrug. seems essentially the same. it's the same $5 coupon that was in this week's circular everyone gets on their doorstep thursday.

they were clearancing out a bunch of stuff that doesn't mesh with their brands, so you can find some decent enough sales to make the $30 without a hassle.

that said, i'm unimpressed so far. buy one get one? sure, but you're still paying less than what one would cost at shoprite in every instance i saw. chicken breast at $4.99/lb bogo... whatever, shoprite's sale is 1.99/lb.

it's nice and all that a business will stay open, people will have somewhere to shop and etc. etc., but i'll probably not bother unless their weekly sales pick up steam. why pay more for the same stuff?

Pretty sure the Shoprite is not getting closed.

I remember from the thread on the topic that the plan is to construct a new space for it in the development, while leaving the current store open. Then at some point they presumably will transfer the inventory, but you'd think that wouldn't take too long.

Didn't recall that. Seems pretty impractical to keep that space and parking open while the rest of the lot is a major construction site. Maybe it was the only way to buy them out of their current lease.
impractical or not, that shop rite rakes in the dinero. it was so busy the other day that i just looked in the windo and turned around and went back home sans food.

All of the workers are the same the only change I noticed was that they eliminated the self checkout lanes replacing them with two (or three) 15 item or less express cashiers.

That's not encouraging, but maybe it'll be a slow morph like the C-Town to Key Food.

PS - they also have all new shopping carts!!!(lol)
