Honestly, I do pay more for goods and services when I consider them a value. I also tend to tip more for service staff on average. Paying someone a living wage isn't an artificial tax when the work they are performing benefits those paying taxes and using the services. Roads need painting and paving. Workers need safe conditions. Refusing to increase the gasoline tax by a single penny over the course of decades while continually increasing the cost of mass transit is more of a detriment to our current state than worrying about whether Jim is getting 75k per year, hardly what someone considers "wealthy" money, to work on roads.

The fact that this is one tax category that hasn't been touched while every other form of commuter has seen fare hikes is the definition of manipulating the market in the wrong direction. As for "prevailing wage"... why are you opposed to people making a decent standard of living? I'd rather live in a state willing to pay its workers a fare wage than live in a state that sucks from the government while keeping its population poor.

God forbid we don't lead all of the fifty states in one tax category, since we're the highest taxed state in the USA. Again, if we eliminated the Democrat led 'prevailing wage' handout we'd have plenty of money for our infrastructure. Another 35% would go a long way, no?

As for revenue generation... a minor adjustment of any kind will not prevent drivers from driving nor out of staters from buying gas on their way back to the state they are from. Whether or not the transportation fund has been raided is of no consequence. We can bemoan what occurred prior or look towards addressing concerns now. Increasing fares for mass transit commuters while not touching the costs of those bringing about the biggest cost to our environment is backwards.

The State government keeps raiding the transportation trust fund to make up general revenues. The issue is not because the gas tax is too low. NJ also sells extra gas as people from PA and NY fill up here instead. A steep rise in the gas tax may not raise as much revenue as planned because in state consumption might fall.

This state should be making efforts towards increasing mass transit usage. By increasing the cost of one mode of transportation (a mode that allows for increasing the convenience of another) you decrease its use. These are the types of decisions that are made which result in negative balance sheets and the "poor" footing more and more of the bill. Ultimately the fare hike allows Christie to claim he didn't raise taxes when in reality he allowed for the increase of costs for a huge segment of New Jerseyans. It's a pathetic game of politics where the resulting loser is everyone in the state.

The 9% fare hike is especially damaging for JC . Not only do the increased fares directly affect a large % of JC residents . The increase will result in more surface traffic coming into JC everyday . As commuters opt out of using NJT trains.

How about they double the fare increase and use that money to increase the frequency of the light rail so that it actually becomes a viable rapid transit like link between the cities and towns in Hudson County.

Labor and benefit costs are the driver here, with a strong union component. Since the last fare hike was in 2010, and this will be for 2016, it's about a 1.5%/year raise in costs over that time.
Does anyone think that salaries and benefits (especially health benefits for NJ Transit employees) hasn't raised 1.5%/year over that time?

Fulop 'Raising taxes is always the correct answer'. I guess he also slams Governor Cuomo when MTA raises prices too? After all, many JC constituents use NYC mass transit . . .
And Fulop's math is a bit off-won't a suburban commuter coming from leafy Morris or Somerset County be MORE affected by a 10% rise in NJT costs than someone living closer to NYC?? $129/month from Newark Penn to NY Penn, vs $361/month from Morristown to NY Penn. The suburban users will feel the pain more.

Fulop, backed by pols and union leaders, denounces proposed NJ Transit fare hike, slams ChristiePOLITICKER NJ By Mark Bonamo | 05/14/15 3:33pm JERSEY CITY – As light rail trains clanged behind him at Exchange Place in Jersey City, Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop rang Governor Chris Christie’s bell, denouncing his administration for a proposed nine percent increase in NJ Transit fares that would be accompanied by service cuts. “It seems to be a common practice over the last several months to attack mass transportation, which is crucial and vital to urban areas throughout the state of New Jersey,” said Fulop, a potential 2017 gubernatorial candidate, on Thursday. “Anytime that there is a proposed fare increase and service reduction on mass transportation, it impacts disproportionately working families and urban areas. Absent of a long-term plan, this will be a situation that repeats itself year after year.” Fulop announced the creation of a non-profit organization, called “Fight the Hike,” designed to raise awareness of the latest NJ Transit fare hike and service cut proposal, which would be the fourth increase since 2002. A website for the organization includes a petition drive to the fight the proposed changes, as well as alerting New Jersey residents about the public meetings to be heard by NJ Transit about the proposal. There will also be a petition effort at NJ Transit bus stops, Fulop said.
