Nice strawman!

It isn't remotely close to being a "massive government overreach." It is certainly something where cost versus safety is a factor.

To say that a new two family home needs sprinklers might be a bit much. But to say that a new four family home needs sprinklers might not be.

History has demonstrated that what's best for the consumer (tenant in this situation) is not always what's best for the producer (landlord in this situation). Producers will almost exclusive do what is in their best interest whenever they can, if you really need evidence then go swimming in the Passaic River.

Sprinkler systems are useless like seat belts and motorcycle helmets are useless.

Well-designed sprinkler systems WORK, and have prevented thousands of building fires from rapidly burning out of control, and have saved many thousands of lives.

The governor?s statement is based on the reality that we have to maintain a ?balance between safety and cost,? but that doesn?t remotely imply that sprinklers for single and two-family homes are useless.

Similarly, the number of automobile injuries and fatalities would drop like a stone if our vehicles conformed to the same safety standards as race cars, but those cars would be prohibitively expensive. That's the spirit of the argument--it's not about whether sprinklers work.

Ok, fair point and I stand corrected for the end of my post. However, the blatant bias of the article remains troublesome. Last I heard, NJ.com didn't hold itself out as the democratic equivalent of Fox News but they certainly are acting like it.

Both the picture and headline's use of "torches" are clearly meant to imply that Christie's actions will lead to more burning houses like in the picture. It's also dishonest, as he only conditionally vetoed it and left open the possibility of requiring sprinklers for townhouses.

I do miss the days when reporters would at least pretend to be somewhat objective.

If I recall correctly, NY state does on homes over three stories. It was a sticking point for a lot of homeowners who wanted to renovate a home. In particular older homes that had those great walk-up attics that would ideal to be turned into a master bedroom or office.

The sprinkler requirement made such renovations difficult because of the huge added expense (plumbing work, engineering drawings, etc.). So often, the renovation didn't take place.

Between that picture and headline, could NJ.com possibly be any more biased?

Also, the legislative effort should be to force developers to use higher quality materials, or something that would prevent the massive Avalon Edgewater fire from repeating. Since that building had fire sprinklers, and these were useless, this proposed law was even more useless.

But good luck finding a reporter with a brain to make this connection.

Ridiculous requirement, the nanny state at its finest. No Christie fan, but agree with this veto

Stupid bill, Christie was right to squash it. Maybe the next Democrat governor can mandate all homeowners to install sprinkler systems on all existing homes-let's see how well that flies.

This would have been the developers lobbying Christie so that it doesn't impact on their profit margins - One would think public or family safety would not be met with any objections.

Once again the developers campaign funds outweighed safe building practises for owners and tenants.

Hopefully the next Governor we have will be more safety conscious and see past any campaign funding if the Bill is up for review / approval

Gov. Chris Christie on Thursday rejected a bill that would require all new single and two-family homes in New Jersey to be equipped with sprinkler systems.

Christie conditionally vetoed the bill (A1698), taking out its most substantial provisions and instead recommending that the state Department of Community Affairs study whether it should require sprinklers for only new townhouses.

"Mandating sprinkler installation would increase the upfront cost of every new freestanding home by thousands of dollars, even as this state's citizens continue the struggle to rebuild their lives after Superstorm Sandy," Christie wrote in his veto message. "That storm left unprecedented damage across the state in its wake, leaving whole communities devastated and entire houses demolished. This bill would further burden New Jerseyans rebuilding their homes after Superstorm Sandy."
