The recent news of a Jersey City Councilwoman, who obtained employment from Hudson County government for a $65,000-a-year position that was unadvertised or noticed, is an example of how the political culture in Jersey City and Hudson County remains unchanged and continues to live on.
Public jobs, at the taxpayers' expense, should be noticed and open to the public so that an individual best qualified for the position can fill the role rather than feeding into the system of political patronage. Conflicts of interest can come into play when holding public office and employment at the same time in two areas of close government. If an elected official is put in the position of voting in the public's best interest by voting against their employer, particularly one that provided him or her with employment in this manner, how can the public be assured that their best interest is held first in the decision making process? The answer is, the public can't be guaranteed. Equally as disturbing is the deafening silence of Jersey City's reformers at the helm. The public deserves better and expects continued championing on the issue of double dipping and political patronage jobs as done in the past. Mayor Fulop and council, we call on you to admonish this act of political patronage and for continued advocacy on the issue of double dipping and multiple public job holders. We also call on County Executive Tom DeGise to set and adhere to a policy of advertising and noticing available positions to find the most suited individuals to work on behalf of taxpayers and refrain from continuing the practice of the OPA, Old Pals Act. The public has a right to an explanation of the reasoning and full disclosure of the course of events that led to this hiring decision and awaits a response. Our elected officials have an obligation to work in a manner of fairness, openness and transparency when spending public tax dollars in every capacity. Fulop had to get her a job at the county, she has been gripping to everyone that she was broke and need more income! The fear with the admin that she would get in trouble fund raising, with McKnight advising her and the fact that she sits on the redevelopment agency board. The county didn't just hire her, the Mayor got her the job with the county to try to keep her from doing something stupid! The hypocrisy is stunning!!

I heard from a reliable source that Fulop called the county for the job. The person said Fulop is a bigger phony than____. Sorry, I cannot mentioned the name.

There is a difference Heights Brat, the public was aware they were retired police officer who by the way did pay into their pension system. Coleman background was a non-profit. If the public was told she plans on having a county job too, then the outcome might have been different.

Collecting a City pension & taking a City job is not the same thing? Many would beg to differ as the person is drawing 2 checks from the same entity. That's a little different than collecting a City pension & being a stocker at Target.

This is nothing new. There is no conflict of interest unless the county &/or the city have things on their respective agendas that may impact the other. For example: The city is voting to put a hi-rise on a parcel of land & the county is voting to put a park on the same parcel. (This is a very broad generalized example but gives the basic idea)

That's part of it - but double-dipping was one of the main drums Fulop beat for eight years in mastering his "reformer" pose. How can he possibly justify this without looking like an ass?
Collecting a pension and taking a job are not the same thing.

No one is saying a councilmember can't moonlight. It's considered a part time job. Councilman Yun runs his store. Councilwoman Osborne works at an IT job. There's nothing wrong with that.
The problem is with holding elected office and also holding a city/county job.
