I have been waiting for years for a place to open and make a proper cappuccino or espresso, and I'm finally satisfied. It's absolutely perfect, exactly like Italy.

Also, in Italy a "coffee shop" is called a bar.

And if you are getting Italian coffees in a to go cup, you just don't get it.

Went today, it's solid, but nothing great. Staff was very friendly.

Basic being listed in the same thread as Dames, Mod Cup, Warehouse, Brewshot, Word and now Nine Bar Cafe for quality of coffee is incongruous to me. It doesn't even compare in my opinion.

I've been to Nine Bar twice and happy with the service, ambiance and excellent coffee (got a large latte). I probably will still default to Dames because it's closer, but often when I run errands along Newark, I'm looking for a high-caliber coffee and now I have the place.

anybody else slightly disappointed this place isnt actually a bar?

as somebody who lives within earshot, no. not even slightly.

tangentially related: anyone else notice that the keyhole bar is attracting a WAY more obnoxious clientele lately? their newer patrons seem to enjoy standing out on the sidewalk and screaming at the top of their lungs at 1, 2, 3am. it is charming as all get-out.

a stiff shot of 9-Bar coffee comes in handy after a night listening to those assholes.

This drug ref on this thread is bizarre at best.... Now back to 9 bar yes they have a depiction on the wall to explain the origin - pressure. They hardly have a bar except if you include the pick up area by the machine. It is a seated coffee place.

As for coffee as much as I luuuuuv Choc o Pain, the coffee is not their best, pastries and viennoiseries are.

Basic also has reasonably good coffee.

So why the rather juvenile drug reference for a name?

I think they're referring the a "9 bar" of pressure that is required to extract the perfect shot of espresso. At least that's what their website says: http://www.cafeninebar.com

Went in there today..it was good, but I am definitely a fan of Choc O Pain. They have great coffee, especially when paired with a chocolate almond croissant!

Will definitely be going back.

Aside from 9 Bar now, Dames on Jersey Ave has been my go-to coffee place. They serve Counter Culture coffee (and sell the beans as well). Very smooth, and the ladies there know what they're doing on the La Marzocco espresso machine. I'm surprised no one's mentioned them when talking coffee...

Dames used to be my fav in DT.

Brewshot is very hit or miss.

My new fav is the ModCup kiosk inside Grove Kitchen.

Sam Am isn't bad but i've had some mediocre coffee there.
Warehouse on Bay and Provost is consistently good.

And now Nine Bar.

Cocoa also makes a decent cup even though that's not their main thing.

The coffee scene gets better and better each year.

Nice article, I hope they do well. There is also Prato opening on Erie which I am looking forward to. What would it take to change Erie Street to Via Maggiore or Como?

The pastries are excellent here too. She makes the croissants in house but the other pastries are delivered from Amy's Bread in Manhattan. The scones are absolutely delish.

Tried Nine Bar today. Best espresso since Rome (siiii). Yes Mod Cup has a match if not better. The place has already its community feel, lots of people getting in and out. Yippee!

I stopped in for a latte. Really friendly owners, a really pleasant space. I think they'll do a great business, especially once the Eataly wanna-be opens up.

stopped in this morning. After one sampling, very good double-shot latte. excellent balance. best i've had in JC except for my own and one mind-blowing latte from Mod-cup when they had a stand at the hamilton square sixth borough flea market. (sadly, after that day they only served up filtered coffee at that flea market. was too deflated to ask why.)

Italian-born Jersey City resident to open new cafe combining tasty drinks with relaxed vibe

By Steven Rodas | For The Jersey Journal
on December 30, 2014 at 3:14 PM

For Jersey City resident Stefania Cocozza, coffee is not simply a dose of caffeine in the morning to start the day - coffee is life.

Cocozza, who was born and raised in Rome, Italy, has had more than 20 years in the coffee business including training with some of the industry's top figures at the University of Coffee in Trieste, Italy and dealing on the barista training and marketing side as well for various clients.

Now, Cocozza will open the doors to her own coffee shop, 9 Bar Cafe, bringing a warm Italian atmosphere to the Jersey City community she has grown fond of in her last 10 years as a resident.
