Yeah cnn.com reporting it blew up on launch pad. Unmanned thank god. (CNN) -- An unmanned NASA rocket exploded early Tuesday evening. According to NASA, the Orbital Sciences Corp.'s Antares rocket and Cygnus cargo spacecraft were set to launch at 6:22 p.m. ET. It was set to carry some 5,000 pounds of supplies and experiments to the International Space Station. "There was failure on launch," NASA spokesman Jay Bolden said. "There was no indicated loss of life. Bolden added, "There was significant property and vehicle damage. Mission control is trying to assess what went wrong."

Damn, something went wrong. I raced home to try and see it and saw the live footage. I thought, "hmm that looks weird" when I saw a huge fire at the launch pad. Like an idiot I was standing on our sidewalk still eagerly waiting. Not sure what happened yet.

Possibly the space station? I think it was visible about the same time last night. I didn't look for it (though I often do when it's visible in our area) but from what I remember of the sighting opportunities from last night it was visible for about two minutes looking south around 7pm.
The NASA app is great for ISS sightings. Tonight you can see it at 6:48pm for 2 minutes, starting at 21 degrees above SW going to 11 degrees above south. Then again at 7:29pm for 1 minutes, from 11 degrees above SW to 10 degrees above SSW. It looks like a very bright star moving at a steady pace. (It may be too cloudy tonight.) Most ISS sightings recently have been very early in the morning. The past few days have given us some evening opportunities, through this Friday. Happy stargazing!

Did they launch something else last night then, because I swore I saw something. The reports I read said to look for something that looks like a "bright fast moving star", and that's what I thought I saw. It certainly wasn't an airplane.

Thanks so much for sharing. I will certainly get my camera equipment ready for a photo shoot of the rocket trajectory.

Weather permitting of course. Around 6:45pm tonight. You can get the info from Gothamist below, but it looks like JC will have a pretty good viewing angle based on what I'm seeing:
