I've yet to notice this. The liquor store on the corner of 8th and Jersey, I can smell from outside. Not this though.

I know the smell you are describing. I smell it as I drive over
the Turnpike extension on the way home. It's awful. Good luck.

Are you saying that those numbers will be answered 24/7? That's great.

Thank you, I will keep those numbers handy so I can call when I notice the odor, particularly if I wake up from it in the middle of the night!

I called both numbers today because I woke up to the smell last night (Hamilton Park).
The upshot from my calls: (1) They have only two JC "odor" complaints on record, which is not something they see as major and likely will not cause a robust response unless more complaints are received. (2) Guidance was to call the first number when the odor is being perceived not after-the-fact. Their protocols call for a response to "live" complaints, not those submitted after the fact or published on social media/message boards. (3) The DEP investigator I spoke with at the second number, who struck me as professional and engaged, and who tried his best to be helpful (at least in terms of explaining the protocols they typically operate under), is named Douglas Bannon. (4) My complaint was being routed to a Hudson County agency for primary follow-up. Haven't heard anything from them. My sense is that if this happens again and all those concerned call at the time the event is happening they will have to treat this as significant enough to merit a real response. So if you care about this please report to the numbers below. This powerful chemical smell cannot bode well for health and safety of the neighborhood. Quote:

The TPK construction makes the most sense to me. It has gotten closer to DTJC as they are now working in the area just behind Enos Jones Park. As far as I remember they do work all night on these projects.

I've been over there a lot lately. I smell it too. Worse: My friend's air filter has been showing the VOC light (volatile organic compounds) more often and at odd times. She says usually it comes on only when she's been running the oven, or at the end of the day during extremely hot summer days (when presumably nasty stuff in her building has been baking).

These are all good suggestions, I will follow up because I am becoming more concerned as it seems to be increasing.
It's certainly not skunk - that I do know and I have had to close the windows because of that too... this is a sickly sweet chemical smell. I have smelled the same thing driving by the nearby Turnpike extension. I don't live far from the freight trains, I have thought the smell might be coming from there. My husband thinks it may be the recycling plant. I am suspicious because it happens most at night, which means it may not be monitored.

I'm not sure what it is, but I know what you are talking about. It's been around for a while, but I usually only smelled it when driving out the 78/turnpike overpass (newark bay extension). It would usually be the strongest coming down the bridge going east to west toward the airport/turnpike/78 split. I've smelled it a few times downtown with today being one of them. My best description for it is the bad smell of roadside rest stop bathroom soap.

It could be construction on the Turnpike extension. They do use acrylic-type sealers. Give Turnpike Authority a call.

I have noticed an acrid smell several times at night over the last several years. It is often strong enough to induce burning in the eyes. It is certainly not skunk. It is definitely a chemical of some sort. I have noticed a similar smell near highway construction sites on the TPK Extension. It has been so bad at times that I really start to think that the feared chlorine leak from the freight trains has finally happened. It's scary when you realize there is nothing you can do except wait for death unless you have scuba gear or heavy duty breathing apparatus.

Still worth calling, dtjcview. When I called, DEP told me that they track the number of calls they get in any particular area, which may affect enforcement, etc. It creates a record of the problem.
If you find out any details, please do share!

They might already know about it - there are some monitoring boxes at jersey and tenth. Might take a walk over and ask.

To report the problem to NJ Dept of Environemental Protection, call 1-877-927-6337. They keep track of the number of calls they get in the area to track problems, so it is worth reporting if you smell it. Just called them and they were very pleasant and will give you a case number to follow up with their air enforcement unit, who can be reached at 973-656-4444.

This has been going on for some time:
http://jclist.com/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=27116 it's probably slowly giving us all cancer. I suspect it is a chemical company doing something illegal at night.

We are on the other side of downtown from HP and I have been smelling this chemical smell at night (with the windows open) for the past week. It's awful and this morning I told my spouse that we will need to keep the windows closed. I smelled it this morning as I left for work. I was attributing it to nearby road work construction, but that seems strange that the smell would be covereing such a distance from HP to where I live.
Its definitely not a skunk smell. We have had that before and this is totally different. It is a sickly chemical smell. It actually woke me up from sleep two nights in a row. I, too, am concerned about the health risk. WHo can we call to report this?

We sleep with our windows open and I haven't noticed anything. It could be localized (like a dry cleaner) or I could just have a dead nose.
I suppose it could also be a skunk, but I assume you would know that smell.

Sounds like skunk. They hunt through trash at night around HP - think they come from train tracks near Enos.

I left my windows open this week, and there has been an overwhelming chemical smell in my apartment - mostly at night. I have been here 6 years and I do smell this every once in a while, even as I walk home from work. It seems this year it has gotten worse and more frequent. Last night the smell woke me up out of a sound sleep, I got up and closed the windows but it still permeated the room and was sickening. I realized that this had happened sometime last week as well. The smell is like a sickening sweet chemical, I'm wondering what it is from? Does anyone know? I am concerned about the health risk.
