Mine started sprouting from about 1 ft up the trunk a couple of weeks ago. I cut it back to the 3 way crotch at about 18". Interestingly, it's been bleeding sap from the cuts, but you can see not from the entire surface. I don't know if it would have srouted further up or not later on, but I have 3 branch buds about 1.5" long, and a few more appearing.

Just can't stay away
 
|
Finally spotted some new growth sprouting from the main trunks of my well-established tree!
It's been growing vigorously from the ground for a month or so, but looked like the existing tree was top dead. I cut off the smaller, clearly-dead branches a couple weeks ago; glad I was patient/lazy about chopping down the rest of the tree. Hope some of you other JC fig tree folks are getting some sprouts, too...

Sorry to hear your tree was a victim too. Thankfully, when they come back they grow like weeds. My wife is hassling me to cut it down, I've been waiting to see if it might sprout from the trunk or larger branches.
What garden show was that? I've been looking for a good garden podcast, there used to be an English one by a woman who I'd listen to read a phone book. Quote:

I was listening to a garden show this morning & it seems that because of the very harsh winter, most fig trees are not budding. The host said they are not dead but they should be cut back. I noticed that several others in my are have done so & I have started. Oh well, maybe not this year but next. :(

you can also grow mulberry trees from cuttings. There's an impressively tall mulberry tree behind Shop Rite growing from a crack in the sidewalk by an abandoned building. Looks like they're going to cut the tree down and demolish the building ASAP so go grab a cutting while you can!! South side of 2nd St between Marin and World of ABC

Just checked - mine is doing great - lots of what are definitely ficus leaves. They are coming from the earth, not from existing branches. This was Miss Figgy's first winter. My garden faces east and gets a lot of sun.

There's a thread over at Figs4fun that says 95% of the fig trees in Queens are top dead. Tough winter. Heightsbrat, has yours leafed? If so, you have unusually tough trees.

I have a small black fig in a container that starts to drop leaves when it goes below 55 F. I am not sure when I am moving it back outside because we are going to have nights into the mid 40s this week and possible next.

A dining highlight for me was in Sao Paolo, where a 100 year old fig tree grows in the center of the restaurant; I swear the tree had a trunk four or five feet thick.
When I kept fig trees I had them on rollers and brought them into the garage for the winter and wrapped them. I also netted them once the fruit set to keep them from the birds. Quarter the figs almost all the way, put a nugget of Gorgonzola inside, wrap in pancetta, and grill away until the pancetta crisps up.

Anyone have any activity on their figs? I fear for mine, it was a tough winter. Clearly all last years growth is dead. No doubt even if it died back to the ground it will grow back fast from the roots, but it would be a bummer. Same thing happened 9 years ago, before I rooted this tree.

Sorry, figs don't work that way. The fruit ripens by all of a sudden expanding and softening over a couple of days. You could try netting it, or part of it. I do that for my grapes. BTW, don't prune now, do it when it's dormant.

Thanks for the suggestions, the tree is well over head height it is probablly about 8-10 feet tall and branching out all over - is it possible to pick them and ripen them off the branch? I have heard you shouldn't do that but with my experience I never get any fruit, I have never even eaten a fig its such a tragedy lol -

I don't know what to say about the pests, figs don't ripen all at once, they sort of ripen from the base of the branch to the tip in a wave that lasts at least a month, usually several. Birds & squirrels usually get the top ones, we compete for the rest.
As for pruning, you simply can't over do it, so bring it down to what you think is manageable. If you cut it to the ground it would be back. I cut mine to about head height, that way at least a fair amount of fruit is within reach.

I have a massive fig tree in my backyard near LSP - and I mean MASSIVE this thing is overgrown I believe, unforutnately when the figs are almost ready the opposums and whatever come and eat every last piece of fruit - I get hundreds of figs on this one tree but have no idea how to maintain or harvest it. I have lived here for 3 years and just figured out last year it was a fig tree lol -

Brewster - my green thumb gave out on me this time. Mine developed heavy mold and did not root. Speaking of peppers, on the other hand, mine are flowering now and doing awesome.
Speaking of sprouts, I have a Muskogee Crape Myrtle seedling that has sprouted from one of its mama's seeds from last fall. Thinking of transplanting it.

How's everyone who got cuttings doing? Success stories?
I did a late pruning of a small branch, and on a whim stuck an 18" piece halfway down into a large pot with my bell peppers. It seems to be well on it's way, sprouting from 3 nodes.

We have roots!!!
I got a stick that I cut up in six pieces with two or three nodes on each. I put four cuttings in a mug (on top of the fridge), rolled up in damp paper towel and put a ziplock bag over it. All four pieces have some root developmentt and some are spouting leaves! The two top pieces I stuck in a jar of water and it looks like there are roots coming, I should probably bag that jar too. Do you need two plants to have fruit? And thank you again Brewster!

OK, there's now a plan! Parkman has suggested that I bring the cuttings to the Van Vorst Park Farmers Market tomorrow, and place them with one of the farmers. I figure I'll drop them off by 11. If that doesn't work for you, let me know.
I suggest trying at least 2 or 3 sticks with 2 or 3 nodes on them.
