I've used Victoria TV & Appliances in Bayonne for years. I have a multi-family building and they do the installing and de-installing for the season. Good prices.

Hi all!
Just wondering where to put our window air conditioner. We have a little 1200 square foot house that is two stories. There are two little rooms upstairs. Those two rooms get around 15 degrees more sweltering in the mid year than whatever is left of the house. We have a 5000 BTU air conditioning unit. One of our family needs to put the unit upstairs in one of the rooms.

Any recommendations for air conditioner installers? In previous years I have hired a handyman to drill the window frame and attach the unit with screws, but now my building is requiring brackets, so I think I'm going to need a professional.

@Brewster - you're right on the EER of portable units, but then again it depends on how you use them. If you want to keep a room/apt at a steady 72F, get a window unit. If you are happy to get a direct cold air blast, but leave the rest of the room at 80F, I'd bet the portable works out more cost-efficient.

Those units are much less efficient than the typical window unit, so much they try and hide their EER in their specs, you usually need to be Sherlock Holmes to find it..

You could consider a portable unit like one of these - I have had an older model for a few years. It has drawbacks like it's not truly portable since the hose only stretches 5 ft or so from a window. It's probably not the quietest - but it creates more of a white noise which I find easy to sleep through.
It's biggest advantage is that you can direct the cool air exactly where you need it. I frequently run it on a low setting, point it at me like a fan and stay perfectly cool while leaving the rest of the room at 80F. http://www.amazon.com/NewAir-AC12000E ... Conditioner/dp/B000PGQ8YQ

In the apartments where I don't have central A/C, I have been using Friedrich without any issues. I had to replace a few after about 11 years of use though.

Agree on Haier - stay away! Despite the German-sounding name, it's actually a Chinese company. You can't really go wrong with any of the Korean or Japanese brands. I had LG window units before I got central AC, and was pretty happy with it. If I have one bit of advice, err on the high side of BTUs needed to cool the space. You may pay a bit more in electricity, but you'll be glad when it's one of those super-humid 100-degree days.

Stay away from Haier, I got a little unit that was so loud I had to give it away. Korean brands seem OK.

It's that time of year again... Especially for those of us on the top floors of apartments without central AC...
Can anyone recommend a good QUIET window AC unit? I've had mine for 6 years and it sounds like a lawn mower in my room. Standard size. Thanks in advance!
