I agree, and don't think the Powerhouse, or any bar, is on its way to becoming a frat house. Hoboken has developed its culture because of a) the large amount of young, post-college New Jerseyans who live there and are all connected Kevin Bacon style b) the out-of-towners who flock their on Fridays and Saturdays in a friend's car or on the train.

That crowd does not constitute a large portion of Downtown JC nightlife (except for maybe the beer garden on random nights). That's why I think that some new sports bars could be a welcome change so long as they have the right vibe.

Yes, because it's a law that everyone must love being around a bunch of drunks screaming at millionaires playing a game on TV.

But why would I be doing MYSELF a favor? Wouldn't I be doing THEM a favor, since they're the ones who don't want me around? You seem confused, Nori.

Bars like Wicked Wolf in Hoboken grew old for me quickly because of how crowded and annoying they would get during the weekend. Yet they must have been doing something right to attract all those people.

As I said earlier, TVs shouldn't take up every square inch, but if a sports bar is executed properly, it could be a fun experience and provide some variety in the DTJC scene.

As Baron-Bay said, the key is to know what you're about. Up until now, the Powerhouse has advertised itself as some mish-mosh of club, fine dining, lounge, pizza place, and sushi joint. Throwing a bunch of TVs and a billiards table on top of all that doesn't sound like a step in the right direction, but we'll see.

Here's their recent FB post on the changes:

This Tuesday/Wednesday the lounge will be closed for upgrades! We will be open Thursday - Saturday (regular hours) and plan to re-launch on St. Patrick's Day. At that point, we will be open 7 days/ week. The re-launch includes a 188" TV Wall, 25 TV's, Billiards, & an expanded menu. Come check it out!

The average person doesn't go there. It's all 20 somethings who binge drink every weekend.

So they probably drink 8-10 drinks a night and get charged for 14-16 without knowing cause they are so wasted.

Do yourself a favor and avoid that place like the plague.

Places like Bounce and The Ainsworth in NYC probably have MORE than 22 TVs.

They do very well; there is a demand for sports-intense drinking environments.

Although I personally go to lengths to avoid bars (and certainly restaurants) with TVs, I would in fact prefer 30 screens to 4 screens, assuming it is done "right" and the sports angle is carried through in a wholistic, cohesive fashion.

It comes down to doing what you do with conviction. Be focused. Be abundantly clear to your customer what you are about.

Current popular sports are basketball, hockey, spring training and champions league. You will also need a lot of TV's for March Madness.

If they will be showing teams from outside the NY/NJ area there will definitely be lots of sports to watch.

Simple, the TVs aren't there to get you to come eat dinner. They are there to get you to come watch sports and drink beer.

It's not for everyone but think Wicked Wolf in Hoboken, which does great business.

Can someone or anyone in the restaurant industry explain how 22 TVs might be an inducement to eat at a restaurant? I just don't see how in such an ADD ridden atmosphere how someone could have a date with their spouse, significant other or family and like this atmosphere. Even a single person would find this intolerable. It sounds like a recipe for failure. The only place where a TV seems to work is when it it's not intrusive ro overbearing (The Merchant where it's at the front by the bar or the PJ Ryans on Barrow where it's by the bar also which is ideal for sports enthusiasts or those say dining alone). I think Merchant has just 2 and PJ Ryan's 2 or 3 tops? 22 is just obnoxious.

Noise ordinances and permitting were changed but businesses still seem slow to catch on, with a few exceptions (i.e. Lamp Post). But White Eagle Hall is slated to open as a dedicated mid size music venue in the fall, so we'll see what happens.

Seems like downtown has a problem with copycat businesses: one upscale salon is doing great so 5 more open. One italian restaurant is doing great so 5 more open. One craft beer bar does great so every other bar starts pouring american craft beers (including the german biergarten). One bar gets 25 tvs so all bars suddenly think they should follow. We need some new, creative options.

I don't find an overabundance of TV's attractive at all, but I don't speak for the general population of the area. I'm curious to see how it pans out... meanwhile, we have the Coffee Shop next to The Bistro bragging about how many TV's they will cram into that space. How's that for generic naming and entertainment?

I agree, but it's tough to judge a place before it has opened. While "big game" touting sports bars got old quickly in Hoboken, I think a well-executed one would actually diversify the scene in DTJC. Without knowing anything about the quality of their drink and food menu, the idea of billiards is intriguing, at the very least.

The 6th Borough moniker may be a little hokey, but at least it's something that tips a hat to the town we live in.

Is that place ever filled? It always seems 2/3 empty whenever I go by. Granted, I'm seeing it on my way to/from Shoprite, so maybe the party crowd keeps different hours than boring old me.

I walked by on Monday and it looks like the new place is called Sixth Borough Bar and Grille or something like that. Going to be a sports bar by the looks of it. The signed mentioned how they would have "every game" as well as billiards.

The Powerhouse Lounge was recently sold to the owner of O'Hara's Downtown Sports Bar & Grill. Just heard it from an employee of O'Hara's.

He says the tentative plan is for the place to be similar to what Powerhouse has already been marketed as (i.e., a bar, restaurant and nightlife destination).

True! Teak also puts out a good product. Good sushi and entree selection, albeit a little too loud sometimes.

According to bill, in post #4, their sushi is really good. I may just stop in to check it out, as sushi is one of my favorite things when dining out (mostly because I find that interesting, varied rolls are not easy to make at home yourself.)
