What a loss. The owners filled a real need in the neighborhood, and they were always kind and generous to my little ones.
Looks like I'll be making a lot more trips up to Asian Food Mart on Summit for my Asian groceries. FYI - they bring in two types of banh mi on the weekends, as well as dim sum.

"What I don't get is if you're trying to sell it as a going concern, why drive it into the ground by being a crappy store?"
that's not a recent development, that store has been pretty lousy for at least ten years if not longer. and yeah, this is a real shame and a real loss.

They told me that Steven's Vietnamese Market across the street was for sale, which is why it's inventory is such crap. It's too bad they didn't want to buy it, but I guess they've had enough of the lifestyle.

I echo Cory's sentiments. They will be sorely missed. I will miss their affable personalities, their dim sum, shopping for spices/other provisions there. Hopefully, Steven's market across the street will assume their dim sum offering. One of the downsides of gentrification is you lose places like this.

That is indeed unfortunate. The only decent place to get a banh mi in my opinion. Anyone know if they are closing for good or if they are relocating? Would be great if they reopened near the Vietnamese place on 10th.

This is really too bad that they're closing. I already miss their restaurant and this shop filled a niche. Anytime I needed any sort of authentic Asian ingredients they had what I was looking for. They were also incredibly friendly and helpful when I clearly had no idea what I was looking for. Too bad that Nha Trang, which seemed to do a brisk business, is being driven out while junk stores on Newark are somehow still kicking.

Friendly neighborhood reminder to stock up on whatever favorites you have before this place closes its doors in just a week and a half.
On a personal note, many thanks to the proprietors for being such good, friendly long-time neighbors who brought something unique to downtown.

Sriracha is like fish sauce: a little goes a long way. It'll take me several years before I use up either bottle in my fridge. And the beauty of both is the stuff never seems to go bad (how could you even tell?). By the time I use up my current bottle of Sriracha, maybe around 2017, the company will have worked out its production problems.

Can't they find another storefront in the neighborhood?

They told me over the summer that the developer who bought the property is allowing them to stay there until the condo project is approved by the city (an architect has supposedly already drawn up plans). Once the project is approved, they'll get two months' notice to vacate the premises. Here's hoping the city departments involved move at their usual glacial pace... No idea where downtown I'll be able to get fresh Thai basil and kaffir lime leaves once this store is gone.

They told me about two weeks ago when I was introducing friends who are moving to DTJC. At that time they didn't have a timeframe for closing - it could be a year or more. I wonder what's included in the multi storefront lot. Maybe in honor of the shuttered Vietnamese restaurant and grocery they'll have a Trader Ho's on the ground floor.

I peeked in a few weekends ago and it still looked like they were doing a lot of construction. The space is 25,000 sf. Funny they are already in the yellow pages and other directories. Oh man, this def is a bummer. My wife and I are in there at least once a week. The owners are so friendly and helpful. The other option, 555 market, is way to far for us since we don't own a car. We stopped going to Steven's a LONG time ago, do they even stock the shelves anymore?

They told my wife today that they're closing because the whole multi storefront lot is going to be developed into condos. Bummer, I hope Steven's, the Vietnamese market across the street, can get their act together and stay in business, it's definitely gone downhill over the years.
