Anyone have updated info on swim lessons for adults?
I saw that Pershing Field pool has lessons for adults, but the JC rec page has no info about how to register for them. I took lessons as a kid, but would like to add swimming as a crosstraining activity and don't think my skills are up to snuff to make that happen yet. Thanks!

Does anyone know if Pavonia Pool is any good (not insane, not disgusting)? Looking for something a bit closer than the beach on occasion.
Other options in the greater JC area (Hudson County, Secaucus, etc.) are welcome, even if they charge a fee.

Years ago, Ferris HS opened their pool to the public during the summer, why can't this happen again? I know Bayonne HS opens their pool to the public.

Thanks. I tried looking it up yesterday on google maps, but somehow it didn't show the Light Rail info (only bus info).

I don't ride buses, so I have no idea. But, from the LSP light rail station you can get there by walking straight up Johnston Avenue. According to Google Maps, it's just shy of a half mile walk (~0.4 mi, about 8 minutes).

Is the JC pool and sprinkler schedule up somewhere? I don't see it on the City of JC website.

What's the best way to go to the Lafayette pool by public transportation? Bus or light rail?

If you are planning to go to the Lafayette Pool, here is some advice: go REALLY early. It gets too crowded on weekends.

Where is that pool? The website doesn't have the address.

The outdoor public pool in Lafayette is gorgeous and completely open in the mornings. It tends to open at the end of June through Labor Day.

Just curious if people have suggestions for places to go swimming outside in the area? Just didn't want to have to drive far every weekend.

T-bird, for the Princely sum of $3 you can decided for yourself whether you'd enjoy the pool. And the desk clerk can answer your questions.
Honestly, I see people join gyms for hundreds of dollars and go like 1x a week. If you ever swim more than once a week you come out ahead with a membership. There's even a complaint box for members - by the drain, 12 feet down.

Thanks! Also - I know there have been conversations about this on here in the past but they were a while ago:
We are thinking about joining Pershing or Stevens for the winter. How are the Pershing facilities? I saw that there had been some renovations a few years ago but no one really commented on it afterward. Also - I haven't been able to figure out from the disjointed information available on various city and city-related websites what the cost of Pershing is, just a per day fee. Any information on Pershing is appreciated.

If you pony up $75 for a six-month membership you can get in weekends at 9:30 AM. General admission ($3A/$2c) gets sloppy seconds at noon!

Anyone know why Pershing pool opens at noon on weekends? I assume it's booked for programs or swim teams or some other worthwhile reason, but don't know for sure. I sure do wish it opened earlier for general swimming though.

We also tried Pershing Field last week too, was impressed at the cleanliness and the facility (went with low expectations - having been a swimmer all through middle & high school, I have swam at some not so nice venues). There were a couple lanes open for lounging and the rest of the pool was lap lanes. Water was crystal clear and bottom was very clean.

My friend and I went Tuesday morning for lap swimming, it was really nice! I only wish they opened at 6AM...7AM is cutting it a bit too close to get into the city and into the office by 9... :/

Yes, the Lafayette pool has adult swim until 10 a.m. I was there this morning from about 9-9:30. There were 6 or 7 of us swimming laps and another 4 or 5 socializing in the pool in a corner. All adults. Very quiet and relaxing. It's also clean (at least in the morning). I hope more people will start going because today was one of the busier mornings I've experienced, and if that doesn't keep up, I fear the hours will change. I don't want to lose the adult swim time on weekday mornings! (And if you go, bring your ID. The woman at the gate recognizes me now, but still checks my license every time.)

THe pool opens at 10:00 AM for general admission. The guards take out the 2 lane lines and put up a rope across the pool for the deepend. Madness ensues.

That's great. Does it go until 10am? I ask because the city's listing say 9am, and I'd prefer the later time if possible.
Thanks!

The Lafayette pool is wonderful on weekday mornings for lap swim from 7-10. It's quiet and pretty empty then.

+1 North Bergen. My friends went there all last summer, very chill.
Pershing Field Pool has expanded hours for members, part of the roof still opens for sun, and there is a patio outside. Since it's not free the crowds are manageable. You could also try to hook up with a resident of one of the swanky condoboxes like Avalon Cove. "A swimmer will always find a place to swim."

Time for me to revive this thread because it is HOT outside these days.
Does anyone have any information on an OUTDOOR pool (alternatively, a pool with a sort of "greenhouse style" covering) that offers memberships that is either in or close to Jersey City - i.e. Hudson County? I've been to the Pavonia and Johnston Avenue pools. I didn't like my experiences there. Call me picky. I'm willing to pay money to swim in a pool that is outdoors and nice, and has a few simple deck chairs and/or tables and willing to drive to it. Apparently the one in Secaucus used to allow non-residents to swim there for a higher membership fee than Secaucus residents, but they don't do that anymore, perhaps because they've paid off the debt associated with that pool over the last few years. Any help appreciated.

Hey guys. I've been reading this website for years, but never felt compelled to register and comment until now.
I went swimming at the new Lafayette pool for the first time on Tuesday and had a really great time. It was a perfectly fine, (seemingly) safe experience. I've lived downtown since 2006 (and in JSQ prior to that), so I've never really experienced much of the JC "ghetto." I rode my bike there, and realized that the ghetto isn't really that bad if you're there early in the morning.(I showed up at the pool around 8am.) The streets are quiet, presumably because all the crackheads are sleeping Really though, there was only 2 other people there swimming. The lap pool is apparently empty every morning according to the lifeguards. Speaking of which, the lifeguards are all kids in their late teens or early 20's, who were all perfectly professional and friendly to me. So, with that said, if you're thinking about heading over for lap swimming, don't be afraid. Statistically speaking, crime usually only happens in the ghetto at night...rude misbehavior may happen during the day at the pool, so I can't speak to the atmosphere during the afternoon. But yeah...I also was the only white person at the pool. No big deal though to me.
