Your the governing body of the New Jersey 9/11 Memorial Foundation. You mailed out a very large number of post cards inviting bereaved family members to your yearly big event. But at the last minute you find you can't get a politician or a band to take part in your show. Do you A) stage your event anyway with dignity and grace? or B) Decide not to show up the day of the event and make no worthwhile attempt to tell your invited guests the party is not going to happen? The fact that the N.J.9/11 memorial Foundation decided to take the second option speaks volumes about their priorities and lack of professionalism. I personally feel that the members of the Foundation should all resign at this point. There is no good reason they couldn't have made some last minute attempt to have a scaled down memorial service and the idea that they didn't even have one of their members show up to explain themselves to the families is the worst sort of insult.

The private, non-governmental group that is responsible for the event dropped the ball. How can you try and throw crap at Christie when the organizers themselves canceled the event-Christie wasn't even invited to speak.

Here is the post from the organizers on their Facebook page. Does it look like ANYONE from NJ Government was invited/involved? Feel free, Brick, to apologize to Governor Christie for trying to throw crap against a wall and hope it sticks.

Empty Sky: New Jersey September 11Th Memorial

August 19.

Hello! We were planning an event on September 8th, 2013 to commemorate the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks but we have had much difficulty in generating interest in the event from New Jersey family members. Can any of the followers of this page indicate whether they are interested in such an event?
Thanks for responding.

By Felix Alarcon/The Jersey Journal

on September 08, 2013 at 7:02 PM, updated September 08, 2013 at 9:30 PM

Dozens of families who lost loved one in the terrorists attacks of Sept. 11, 2001 showed up today for a memorial service at the Empty Sky 9/11 memorial in Liberty State Park in Jersey City. All they found was an empty park.

The New Jersey 9/11 Memorial Foundation, a nonprofit group that formed to help raise money to get the memorial built, said this afternoon it canceled the event for number of reasons, including a lack of interest.

In a response to people at the memorial that were angry they weren't notified of the cancellation, an unnamed official posted on the group's Facebook page that "It is very difficult for us to get in touch with the family members when the state is not directly involved."

Reached by phone, an official with the group who wasn't authorized to speak for the group, said part of the reason for the cancellation is that Gov. Chris Christie wasn't going to attend and musicians scheduled to perform also backed out.

"It was a disgrace that we couldn't get speakers and politicians to come forward," the official said.

Some families, clutching postcard invitations to the event, waited more than an hour at the park before one person there finally received confirmation that it was off.

"Many family members are here waiting and nothing is happening," Loren Asciak posted on the group's Facebook page. "This is very disappointing."

Empty Sky is the official state memorial that was dedicated in 2011, for the 10th anniversary of the attacks.

"I feel I'll never have closure, but I'm glad people are aware of it and are coming out," said Shelly Kane from Englewood, who was at least buoyed by the number of other families that turned out today. Kane lost her son, Howard Lee Kane, 40, when two planes crashed into the World Trade Center towers.

Michael Raymundo, of Bayonne, broke the news to the few families that remained past 2 p.m.

"I kept calling the number on the postcard and no one picked up," said Raymundo, whose wife's two cousins died at the Twin Towers. "Then I got a call back from that number and they said there was Sandy damage and lack of support from the government. ... It's bad that they cancelled this. Every year we do this."

Cheryl Charette, of Millburn, whose husband, Mark, 38, died at the World Trade Center, was the first to arrive for the event.

"I think it's a beautiful memorial," she said before learning that the tribute would not be held. "This is the memorial of New Jersey and it's disappointing that no one is here."

Elaine Asciak and her daughter, Loren, were especially disappointed because they're not able to attend the 9/11 memorial in Manhattan Wednesday. Elaine's husband, Michael, 44, died in the WTC attacks.

"The first year I couldn't stop crying," Elaine said. "But it gets easier."

Tom and JoAnn Meehan, of Toms River, who recently returned from Guantanamo Bay as one of the families selected to attend hearings of the five detainees charged with the 9/11 attacks, sat in lawn chairs, waiting patiently for the ceremony. Their daughter, Colleen Ann Barkow, 26, died in the WTC attacks.

"We miss her deeply every year," Tom Meehan said. "This is disappointing that no government officials showed up."

Yes, it's a horribly ugly memorial and a tremendous waste of money. But the worst part is that the entire concept doesn't even make sense any more.

Sure, there was an "Empty Sky" for all those years while Ground Zero sat idle as a giant hole in the ground. But finally, the One WTC skyscraper has been rebuilt and we now have a new NYC skyline to admire. Except...this idiotic memorial is pointing at a section of sky that is no longer empty!

The shortsightedness of this entire memorial is truly appalling. Here's how it looks now from the "money" angle:

Also, note my post in this thread from two years ago when this monstrosity was in the process of being built. I called it then: http://jclist.com/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?post_id=272830

It's pretty comical that the website extolling the beauty of the memorial doesn't even use a real picture of it-- instead, they use a rendering which really bears no resemblance to the real thing. Sadly, even the cleaned-up, CGI version of the monument on the website, shown from an ideal angle, is still pretty hideous.

Here's the hogwash that's on the architects site regarding the trees:

"A gently sloped mound is channeled by a path that directs the sight line to Ground Zero, peeling back the earth to reveal this powerful perspective. A low, grassy berm softly rises to ten feet creating an amphitheater like incline that faces Lower Manhattan. Groves of dogwood trees will both buffer and beautify the site and in a cycle of strength and renewal, the dogwoods will distinctly reflect the changing seasons."

TheBigGuy - So true! At that one precise angle it makes sense but when you move just 2ft it's just two big, long, intimidating unfinished cement walls.

Funny you should mention the trees that are growing in front of the North facing cement wall.

The amazing thing is it only looks right from immediate positions in front of the entry, say a 45 degree viewing angle, the other 270 degrees around the site you see nothing but cement blocks, and from a distance it looks like a bunker or the walls of a fort. The next big debate will be when the trees planted in front grow big enough to block the sun and cast shadows.... they will have to cut them down :)

I think what is funny is the reaction from people seeing it for the first time from to commuter boats, usually business people, the looks are priceless when they hear how much it costs? I forgot Christie was The Gov at the last attempt to stop, but the fix was already in by that point.

Our lawsuit regarding no public hearings and their wrong permit failed since judge as the Governor had zero courage to stand up for that panoramic view from the most crowded part of LSP or for democratic public hearings. This memorial could have been located next to the existing 9/11 memorial, the inspiring "Grove of Remembrance", to right(south) of the cobblestone road, Audrey Zapp Drive with 740 beautiful trees and a boulder with victims' names.

This public memorial in a public park should have had public hearings.

Someone should start a long-term Kickstarter campaign in the hopes of someday-- maybe years or decades from now-- funding the cost of a wrecking ball to take down the walls and the building of a less expensive, more beautiful 9/11 memorial.

When I am walking along the shore in Paulus Hook I sometimes email Frederick Schwartz Architects of NYC photos of their unfinished cement wall eyesore. Doubt it will change their thoughts on public space design but I feel slightly better as I stare at the abrupt penitentiary style blockade that used to yield such beautiful, unblemished views of LSP and the Hudson River.

From the Jersey Journal:

http://www.nj.com/hudson/index.ssf/20 ... s_november_start_for.html

While the original design came with a $23 million price tag, Pratt says the current budget is closer to $13 million, with $6 million coming from the state and the rest from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

I think the final cost was $12 million, so it was already at the budget limit when they decided not to put steel on the outside. So at least they didn't go over budget?

For a comparison, Rihanna bought a house on a hilltop next to the Santa Monica beach for $12 million. The house is 11,000 square feet, with 7 bedrooms, 9 bathrooms, a swimming pool, a 4-car garage, and a 6,000 square foot backyard.

We got two concrete and steel walls and a mound of dirt and grass.

I did a quick google search for "Cost of empty sky memorial" and I got a lot of hits for projections of what the expected cost was supposed to be- written before construction got underway- and the figure that was most repeated was 12 million dollars. Does anyone know what the actual final cost of the two cement walls turned out to be?

I guess beauty in art is subjective. Unfortunately, my subjective opinion is that the monument is atrocious. Even if they were to finish the outside, it would be ill-conceived and obstructive. But with the unfinished concrete exterior-- the thing is just a monstrosity.

As for the suggestion to move a few yards over to get a view-- that doesn't work if you're looking AT Liberty State Park from the Hudson or Paulus Hook. Where you could once see the historic train station, now stands what looks like a drab warehouse or a Berlin Wall replica.

Such a shame that so much money and effort went into something that actually ended up causing significant harm to the beauty of one the area's truly great parks. It's a true lose-lose.

Lucky Hoboken, not having the state ram that monster down their throats like they did to us. It's like these idiots view our public spaces as nothing more than pedestals for their ugly "monuments".

this architecture firm is carving a cottage industry out of 9/11 memorials. they did another one in Westchester and called it "The Rising."

is Springsteen getting a cut of these 20-million-dollar monstrosities?

http://www.schwartzarch.com/projects/westchester_memorial.html

they also had plans to obliterate a third of Hoboken's hard-won Pier A park. thankfully the decision-makers in our neighboring town had the foresight to say hell no.

http://www.schwartzarch.com/projects/hoboken_memorial.html

(though it's fair to say that none of their other 9/11 designs appear as clunky and ill-thought-out as Empty Sky)

It?s easy to blame the designer?it looks like the result of a one-day charrette after all?but architects don?t make projects happen, clients do. Permitting two enormous reinforced concrete walls only paces away from the CRRNJ terminal effectively demonstrates that our state officials have little interest or respect for the history of New Jersey or the important role it played in the growth of our nation. The memorial may be dedicated to seven-hundred forty-six New Jersey residents who perished tragically in a single morning, but TEN MILLION immigrants boarded trains and started their lives as Americans on that site.

Since well before the hurricane seven months ago there has been a section of seawall directly in front of the "monument" that has collapsed into the river and its had some traffic cones and yellow tape cordoning it off all this time, looking like crap. Its just a few feet that has caved in, the cement wall is visibly O.K.. They spent how many millions on that project but they didn't shore up the seawall a bit? They built the thing within feet of the river but nobody tested the ground there?

Yeah, so many people on this board complain about it, and I just don't get it. I like it. Every one of the (dozens) of people and families we've had come and visit over the past year have gone there and been impressed.

As for blocking the view? Whatever. The park is huge. Move twenty yards to the left, your view is fine.
It's nice when you're walking through it. It's hideous from everywhere else.

The original design called for the stainless steel cladding to be on the outside of the walls as well but for some bizarre reason (Cost 15M) the money trough ran dry. Instead we got "architecturally finished concrete."

The lead designer, Jessica Jamroz of Frederic Schwartz Architects failed to recognize the Southern views from places like Paulus Hook would be forever altered. One used to watch sail boats sail around the tip of the LSP but not any more.

It's a hulking monstrosity from just about any vantage point other than looking straight at it from the entrance.

Public Space Design needs to consider more factors than just the project at hand and the foot print it comprises.
