Maybe Crossfit is banking on the age old question, "if you have to ask how much...you can't afford it"

If you're spending $225/month you might as well pony up a little more and get a personal trainer who will work 1 on 1 with you. I'm pretty sure there are ones who charge around $60/hour. I worked with a small gym that did 1 on 1 sessions for 2 months and the results were pretty insane (some of it newbie gains, admittedly, but doubling or tripling strength and endurance in 4-6 weeks is no joke). I gained muscle while also losing fat and went from doughy to having definition. Within 2 weeks my clothes were looser (I was moderately dieting, and working out 6X/week).
I am definitely a fan of starting out free, using body weight exercises and stuff like burpees and jogging for cardio, and if you stick with that for a few months and want to move up - sure, do crossfit, do whatever keeps you motivated and in shape. But don't overpay for a fad. Know what you're getting and what your options are.

LOL +1 I also do not think 30 acres is expensive, its not cheap, but its fair with a great value. Most will agree we do not mind paying for something that is good and worth the money.

Ive still never been to JC Crossfit. But as a slouch, who has gone to the Hoboken "box" for 2 months, I have to say, it's been worth every extra dime. It's an awesome work out with, shitty amenities.

30 acres isn't expensive at all. that said, crossfit is pretty bullshido. it's circuit training with extra nonsense tossed on top of it. and it also has the highest injury rate among gyms due to said nonsense. if the jc one actually has a good head trainer who emphasizes form over numbers, then you'll be fine. get one who has inexperienced shmoes doing axle cleans and well... you've got internet fame ahead of you

Agreed. It's also worth mentioning that Made with Love has been replaced by Choc au Pain, a high-end French bakery. Not sure if you've visited, but anytime I've walked past it, it's full of people.

User, it seems to me that there are far more "pricey" places downtown that are doing well than those that were on the pricey side that didn't do well.
Regarding Made With Love, I'm not sure their closing was because of slow business. Somebody mentioned that she was planning on leaving the area/country.

I love how a thread about a "gym" turns into a socioeconomic analysis of Jersey City's demographic.
Thanks to the person who recommended Krank Systems... I am going to check them out!

Of course its mediocre now that they are closed, I remember when they first opened all the great reviews on this very same forum. They only became mediocre after rumors of its closing. The same thing with that organic skin joint on Grove street all the peeps with $$$$ downtown were MIA. I wish crossfit well, and hope they are successful and maybe all you peeps with $$$$$ will support it.

They seem to be doing ok. They already have a pretty solid membership base and are bringing in 15-20 new members a month. To anyone asking, it's worth checking out. They have free intro classes on Tuesdays at 8:15.

Like I said good luck with that, When high end stores open downtown they are closed within a year, because most people down there can not afford it and those who can afford it (people with money) don't like spending it in Jersey City. If you all like spending money on high end items like you claim, Made with Love would be still thriving.

Jersey City as a whole has 5x the population of Hoboken, and unlike Hoboken, has many very low-income areas. However, Downtown JC has about the same population as Hoboken and is about equal in terms of household income, per capita income, etc.

The average salary in the zip code where this CrossFit will be (07302) is not $25k. CrossFit's target demographic lives in the Grove Street area.

Just curious, in what ways is it better? I've never been Crossfit JC, but I do think Crossfit Hoboken is excellent, other than the locker room space.

Thoughts? Opinions?

Here is pricing for the Jersey City location:
https://crossfitjerseycity.zenplanner. ... er/portal/sign-up-now.cfm Here's pricing for the Crossfit Hoboken location: http://www.crossfithoboken.com/wp-con ... ssFitPrices2012_Final.pdf Relatively similar pricing. Biggest difference is that Jersey City location will be right near public transportation whereas the Hoboken location isn't.

Actually, according to the 2010 census, the per capita income in Hoboken is $69,085 and the median household income is $101,782 (average is $137,166). While Jersey City looks much worse with per capita income of $30,490 and median household income of $54,280 (mean = $76,591), keep in mind that the approx. 1/4 of JC households with income greater than $100k is equal to the entire population of Hoboken. So there are more people who can afford higher-end amenities in JC than there are in Hoboken (although, admittedly, they could be spread out - but I'd guess that many of them are Downtown).

The median income per capita in Hoboken is 75K. If you build it....they will come.
