My wife once saw a locked bike get stolen early in the morning on Essex St in Paulus Hook. The thief lifted it over the signpost to which it was locked, using a tree for help. My wife didn't realize what was going on until the guy already rode away (it was early), but I think bikes will get messed with / stolen eventually if you park them outside for long enough anywhere in JC.

You've answered your own question. If you've got the second, older/cheaper bike then DEF keep that as your beater. Hell, last week didn't one of those racks get plowed into by a construction vehicle? It was all bent to sh!t. I've never seen a Krypto killed off by a hacksaw in any reasonable amount of time, though I have seen them quickly busted open using a hydraulic jack. Power tools are a whole different story, the least likely a thief would use.

No, it wasn't my bike. If an authority cut it, why would they leave the lock? I have always wondered at all the locks and chains that are there without bikes. Are they abandoned, or do people leave them on the rack so they don't have to carry them back and forth?
Robin, while I haven't used a carbide bladed hacksaw (prefer power tools myself) I find it hard to believe such a tool would yield such a smooth cut.

It doesn't have to be done with an angle-grinder, a hacksaw with carbide blade works fine.
You can cut through an expensive D-lock, like the one shown, using a carbide-bladed hacksaw in 5 minutes. No sparks and noise to attract attention. Robin.

For once, I actually agree with something Heights says. If you have the space at home for two bikes, use the beater for commuting. I did that for several years. Even in a low-crime place like Germany, I had my bicycle seat stolen while the bike was locked up outside the train station.

That's wild. Do you know the story behind this? Was this your bike that was stolen or did you find the lock cut like that and take a photo? I'm hoping someone just lost their key to the lock and had to call someone to cut their bike loose.

Simply don't park a bike you care about at all there. Below is all that was left on the rack of somebody's ride. How someone can use a power grinder on hardened steel in a shower of sparks and not get noticed is beyond me. BTW, that's a Kryptonite "NY Lock".

As a J.C. bike commuter myself ending your bike route at the PATH and then moving on I would definately become a dual bike owner. Keep the beater bike that you already have for the short commute to the PATH and the new one for your nicer rides where your bike is always with you.

be aware that the bike racks are going to move to the periphery of the plaza (their current location puts them in the way of farmer's markets and other plaza happenings). your expensive bike will be even more out-of-eyeshot, and possibly easier to mess with.

I've had my LED lights stolen from my bike at the Grove Path. No real vandalism though. I absolutely would not leave a higher end bicycle locked up there.

Has anyone had their bike stolen from here or seriously messed with after locking it up properly?
I've been parking my bike at the Grove PATH for several years now and haven't had too many problems. I keep it locked well. The worst things that happened were a few malicious things like emptying the air out of my tires and messing with my gears. Now, I plan to upgrade and am wondering if parking a bike in the $1k range is asking for trouble. The alternative is keeping my present bike to use for commuting to the PATH and getting a 2nd bike.
