Mayor Healy's statement considerably raised my estimation of him. I applaud him for standing up with other mayors like Bloomberg against the proliferation of guns. Made me proud(er) to live in Jersey City.

JERSEY CITY -- Mayor Jerramiah T. Healy and representatives of the North Jersey Chapter of One Million Moms for Gun Control have announced plans to rally on Saturday, Jan. 26 at 11 a.m. to advocate for tougher national and state gun control laws. The rally will take place in Lincoln Park, at West Side and Belmont Avenues.
Born in the wake of the Newtown, Conn. shootings last month, One Million Moms for Gun Control has planned similar rallies across the country on Monday, Jan. 21 to mark the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday and the civil rights leader's legacy of nonviolence. Local chapters that were unable to hold rallies on the 21st have selected Saturday, Jan. 26 as an alternate day on which to rally for gun control. A national march in Washington is also planned for the 26th. The organization's mission is to advocate for a ban on assault weapons, a ban on ammunition magazines of more than 10 rounds, and more stringent background checks for gun purchasers. The organization also wants to see changes in concealed weapons laws at the state level and wants the sale of large quantities of guns and ammunition to be reported to the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. "One Million Moms for Gun Control - NJ has been overwhelmed by the response of our New Jersey elected officials, especially Mayor Healy's office," said Mandi Perlmutter, organizer of the organization's North Jersey chapter. "As we rally together, we want to send a powerful message to Washington that we will not back down. We demand reform." "We have been advocating for a federal cure for this federal plague of gun violence for years," said Healy. "While New Jersey is often used as a model for common sense gun legislation, we know that without federal action, we will continue to lose countless lives to gun violence. We need to have our voices heard, so that the National Riffle Association and those federal legislators who capitulate to them, will know we are just as strong as the gun lobby." Earlier this month, Healy called for a gun buyback, which took 164 firearms off the streets of Jersey City. - E. You only find it crazy because you do not understand the point of owning one. I have a lot of friends and family that support gun rights because they believe we need them to keep the government in check and this includes Marines(Sgt major, Intel, infantry etc.) I know. So if these people work and love their govt jobs but still feel we need this right it says a lot because they will know more then the average civilian when it comes to threats to this country.

Let me give you an example of how ridiculous these "assault weapon" definitions can be. Most of the time it is made illegal just because a politician that knows nothing about guns thinks it looks or sounds scary.
Jersey legal Now it is transformed to a big bad "assault weapon" that is banned in NJ

Let clear this up a bit 1) NJ already has a law in the book in regards to ammo capacity of magazines.....15 rounds no more....30 round magazines are already banned in NJ. 2)Tho the federal "assault weapon" ban was not renewed... NJ, NY, CA, and MA has laws on the books controlling them.

Oh My God. OH MY GOD! Please Mayor Healy. You're ruining this city. You're a drunken idiot with a wife who's a worse drunk than you. I've seen you on a television interview with your red longjohns sticking out below your pant legs. Your 73 year old deputy mayor is in jail because of you. But I fear you will be re-elected because of the incumbent machine and the dunces that vote. Please, in the name of God, STOP!

Jackie Chan this week stated that the U.S is the most corrupt country in the world - I can only guess that he must of lived in Jersey City with Healy at the helm !

During the time of the second amendment, there were only muskets. Banning high capacity assault rifles is very similar to not allowing civilians to have tanks and machine guns. Last time I checked, machine guns were banned (without special permissions)..should we lift that ban too you crazy people?
How about we do sensible things first like making it illegal for a person to purchase a gun without a background check? This happens at retailers BUT when vendors at these gun shows sell guns, they don't perform background checks and its perfectly okay. Hell, they don't even check ID sometimes. Wtf is that?

?No hunter, no collector, no target shooter has any reason to have those weapons,? the mayor told Amanpour.
"Assault rifle" is a broad term, certain ones can be used to hunt. It also makes no sense to say a collector has no reason to have one, I did not know a collectors only collect handguns and since when did target shooting apply to every gun but an "assault rifle"? Besides the fact he is wrong he seems to miss the point of why he should't be pushing for these type of laws.

That's great -- and it is impressive that Jersey City only had only 13 in 2012 -- the least since records have been kept (starting in 1969)

Thanks Jerry, you got a bunch of rusted revolvers and rifles off the shelves and used our tax dollars to do so. In your press release you labeled a semi-auto M1 carbine (korean war era) an assault rifle. On CNN you said Jersey City doesnt have a problem... are you serious?

Jersey City mayor appears on CNN to decry 'national plague' of guns
By Terrence T. McDonald/The Jersey Journal
January 10, 2013 at 11:46 AM
Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah Healy spoke to CNN?s Christiane Amanpour yesterday about gun control, saying illicit guns are a ?national plague that requires a national cure.?
Healy stressed that the city doesn?t ?want to take guns from hunters,? adding that his problem is with assault rifles and weapons that hold clips of 30 or more rounds of ammunition.
?No hunter, no collector, no target shooter has any reason to have those weapons,? the mayor told Amanpour. ?They were all banned up until about eight years ago. The ban?s expired. We?d like to get them back in place.?
Healy touted the city's reason gun buy-back, which led to 164 guns being taken off the streets, and he also chided Amanpour for saying Jersey City has a "high" homicide rate.
Asked whether he?s hopeful gun-control legislation can be passed by a divided Congress, Healy said he wasn?t until the Dec. 14 school massacre in Newtown, Conn. The shootings there, which claimed the lives of 20 children and six adults inside Sandy Hook Elementary School, may lead to some reform, the mayor said.
?It?s a national plague that requires a national cure,? he said.
