I owned in one of the condo buildings and hated it...the ridiculous maintenance fee for a false sense of security (a doorman wouldn't take a bullet for me) and amenities I barley used was just not worth it for me. But everyone likes different things and has different opinions... I like a litle gritt and diversity others like things clean and secure. Our differing opinions are what make JC great. As for the architecture of ANY tower in JC...let's be honest Manhattan and honestly the new Long Island City has us beat!

Made With Love lost power for several days during Sandy. The owner lost power at her home for over a week and had her car destroyed as well. Most of the food had to be tossed at great expense, and the owner was denied insurance coverage for any of the loss. So we're already looking at a difficult situation here, right?

She managed to find a generator that would allow her to get power back in the cafe and open for some minimal amount of business. At the time, she received advice to ask for donations to help cover the cost of the generator and fuel. Looking back, yes, this was probably a poor decision. However, I don't believe anyone was turned away if they did not have any money to help defray the costs.

The owner was in an extremely difficult situation, stuck in a home with no power herself and no transportation. She was only asking for help to defray the cost of running the generator. In the end, Sandy played no small part in the closing of the Cafe. And yet, cowards on this board accuse her of "profiting" from Sandy somehow?

Personally, I will greatly miss Made With Love and the positive influence it had on the neighborhood.

My home filled with seven feet of water. I lost every single thing I owned and no longer had a place to live. No, we don't have to put the issue to rest. It was disgusting and shameful that while so many of my friends and neighbors were helping me out while asking nothing in return, a supposedly community-oriented business owner wanted to profit off of my misfortune. Good riddance Made With Love.

Christ, if free charging was that important, you could have waited in a long line at Shop Rite like everyone else. I probably would not have charged but no one actually owes you free stuff.

If you take Newport out of the equation, the median income of JC drops by like 50% (Guesstimate but I bet I'm not far off). Those "bland" areas like Newport and PH (where I am) are the life blood of JC. You should be thanking those people who live in these areas everyday and twice on Sunday.

In regards to CP, just look at the sales records. Even during the downturn, CP held up in value. If there were rankings of luxury condos, CP with the amenities finishes, and views would be the top 3 places to live. Sugarlofts would be close behind. In any case, there is no point arguing this because you will never live nor, I assume, can afford to live in CP.

I'm doing you a favor by telling you not to anger those in Newport or PH because without them, JC wouldn't even be the crap hole considered by NY'ers. Think of the most dangerous parts of greenville spread over downtown...no one wants that - not even you. Deep in your heart, I know when you say "cookie-cutter," you are showing love by saving face. It's okay, I understand.

Do you know how many crappy, old, dirty rental units there are in Newport? Your figure of 50% is WAY off. And who do you think owns the brownstones in Hamilton and Van Vorst Park along with Paulus Hook? I can tell you that they're not making $100K/year.

It's special because Crystal Point charges a SUPER premium compared to other buildings / properties, and people are willing pay for it, and STILL think they're getting a great deal.

Sadly, my old brownstone apartment is not special enough to command similar premiums.

While you have to make embarrassingly uninformed assumptions to reach that conclusion, your petty conceit and childlike understanding of the world are publically documented traits. Good luck with that.

#1 Frank, How can Vindi 15 justify poor and jealousy as the reason for not going into MWL bakery ? People with money sepnd it wisely not foolishly. The less educated and lower income seem to kiss their money away, or at least not budget it properly.

Oh come on, it's a big, mostly square glass building. It's perfectly nice but it's not a work of art any more than 77 Hudson is a work of art or Trump is a work of art. All perfectly nice buildings (and inside Crystal is nicer), but none of them broke any new ground or was surprising in any way from a design standpoint.

You are right, I wouldn't live in the Cooper Union building but I would in Crystal Point. The engineering involved to ensure that all residents have views of the Manhattan skyline coupled with the open layout, finishes, amenities, and overall construction quality is a work of art and that is why the building has won awards and a reason why it has sold out compared to other buildings like 77 Hudson, which is also nice but not CP.

In any case, there is no way I can explain luxury to you if Crystal Point is "lovely."

My friend told me the other day that JC, especially the DT area, is doing a good job of removing the ghetto'ness that once inhabited it but he wonders if you could ever remove that ghetto'ness from the JC people. I told him that once more of JC becomes like Newport, then it will happen. Please stop impeding that process.

Reinforced concrete, glass curtain wall, residential grade architecture is almost always ?cookie cutter? by virtue of its design constraints. It doesn?t matter if the Keebler Elves can sell a whole pack for $5 or if a single one costs $5 at a posh bakery, I know a cookie when I see one. Whether you like the design is a matter of a taste, but calling it ?a work of art? is a stretch.

And are you really in an enlightened enough position to question a person?s sanity?? Careful?what with all that glass around.

Paulus Hook is mostly brownstones. The high rises are in an area typically referred to as Exchange Place, although technically Exchange Place is within Paulus Hook. Then again technically it's all considered Downtown Jersey City, including Grove Street area, Hamilton Park, Newport, etc.

I definitely wouldn't call Paulus Hook "cookie cutter", and I also think that neighborhood has a ton of restaurants.

I have to agree. I think Newport and PH are cookie cutter communities and more commuter communities than DT. Both of those neighborhoods have less restaurants (for Newport there may be equal but they are empty post 8pm) and businesses. So it may have been particial demographic, but I personally never went there because it never had official hours. Now tell me a sucessful business that doesn't post or open consistently that is sucessful.

Bad advice? Wouldn't you just instinctively know that's a crappy thing to do? No one is accusing her of trying to get rich in the wake of a disaster, but it's the equivalent of having a stoop sale after a blizzard and "loaning out" shovels for $5 an hour. It boggles the mind as to the thought process of a person doing it. I opened up my home and let friends of friends come over, charge electronics, work, shower, etc. The thought of asking for a "donation" was never ever even considered. I guess when you charge $5 for a croissant, it's hard to shake a "greedy" reputation. She may not have been the most business savvy person, and done any of this intentionally... but I know a lot of people that know her personally quite a while ago, told her her prices were a bit too high, open up earlier to serve coffee, be more prompt, etc. If you can't listen to your locals, you won't succeed. She had every chance to succeed in my eyes, but ignored everything. Criticism isn't necessarily a bad thing.

RE: the $1 phone charging fee - are people not aware that Uta Brauser (of fishwithbraids gallery) has taken responsibility for that policy, since it was HER generator that she was loaning to Celeste of MWL? I'm not sure why Celeste is taking all the heat here. Do people not believe Uta or something? There was even a sign up on the store front stating that any complaints should be directed towards her.

Is this just a bad game of telephone or am I missing something? Other objections to MWL's business plan aside, it is sad to see people tarnishing her reputation over unverified information that as far as I can tell is false.

I could not agree more.
I own property here and I live here so I am heavily invested in the area. There's an awful lot wrong with JC but one of the really good things, I find, is the strong sense of community spirit and this was especially evident after Sandy with the awesome volunteer efforts that took place all over the city, the project at Barrow Mansion deserves a particular mention.
I did not frequent Made With Love much, but I understood it was a community orientated place which is why I found them charging 1$ to charge a phone as baffling as it was disgusting. This was a time when people were pulling together and selflessly giving their time and resources. Many people were without electricity for days, even weeks, and needed a charged phone to keep in touch with loved ones and relatives. That anybody could think of profiting from this situation turns my stomach.
It's a shame when any local business that isn't a dollar store or a crappy bodega closes, but I'm afraid I can't mourn Made With Love after knowing what they did.

That's the thing...the baking was not very good. Maybe the lack of good bakeries in downtown has somehow lowered people's standards, but I always thought MWL was not good. Price aside, I wouldn't pay 1/2 of what they charged for the stuff she had there.

If she had a business plan she would have known at what price points for her products in JC would be acceptable and figured this into her cost of goods.
This seems to be the story of many of the small retailers in JC that open and close good intentions and no business sense.

Well you DTer?s have a funny way of showing your support for the DT businesses that ?you DO want here?. The ones that are slowly replacing those 99c dream stores that you mock. There are a lot of threads on JCList about how the businesses that are replacing those 99c dream stores are closing. (shame on you) Except for the ones that sell alcohol of course. (cheers can?t blame you)

Yes the 99 cent stores are a fixture in the Heights, Greenville, and Bergen- Lafayette, and WE support them every single day. Small 99c dream stores and smaller bodega?s are very convenient. Love walking a few steps in either direction being able to stop in for a 50c cup of coffee, a newspaper (yes the NY Post, not the NYT?s) and a $1.25 24 pack of knockoff Oreo cream filled black and white cookies. (on Friday?s I am right there for the 2 packages for 2 dollars deal)

Oh yeah and you can not beat the characters that run the places and even better the bodega groupies that hang out inside of the store ALL day. (I want that job) I only wish I could understand more Spanish, along with Vietnamese, Tagalog, Hindi and Arabic. Well maybe not because I would hate to know what the translation for ?big goofy white man? was. Funny I have been going to one store for years and I think the only thing the guy has ever said to me was his daily ?2 dollar 75 cents? line. Can?t beat that for customer service, the ultimate in not being a pushy salesman.

Tip: the trick to shopping in the countless JC bodega?s is NOT to look at the expiration dates when buying packages food like cookies and cakes. Also do a smell test on the red meat and chicken before purchasing. They don?t mind if you ask for a quick sniff, it is expected.

Hey all you rich newcommers in the 07310 zip code come on over to the other JC zip codes (during the daylight hours of course) and spend some of the cash that you are saving by renting in JC versus the Big Apple?we don?t bite. (no pun intended) We love to venture down to all of your DT joints that we read about on JCList so you guys should return the favor. A favor that you also owe us for wiping out retail in the rest of JC with your precious Newport Mall. Signed.. the 220K ?other? Jersey City peeps, your NEIGHBOR?s.

If there was ever backwards thinking, this would be it. How can Jersey City ever develop when we are literally BEGGING (aka you) for these 99 cent stores to stay open. Do a smell test? wtf, are we in a third world country?

Yes, I personally DO support the businesses that will help create the JC that New Yorkers don't say, "hey, its that crap hole across the river." Looks like you don't care though and that's fine with me. Just stay in GV and BL or the heights. After I come home from work, I stop by the starbucks by grove and I shop at the Morton Williams in Newport and yes, sometimes I do happy hour at LITM.

And the honest truth is, you will never understand the image that those 99 cent stores have on property values, renters, new yorkers, developers, and potential businesses. No wonder NY wants to build their pipeline through JC...

Poor business plan and no understanding of JC's demographics and socio-economic communities - JC will always be nothing more then a business haven for the 99c Dream and a fast food franchise mecca.
